Corporal Maria Peña Final ("10-7") Radio Broadcast
Please join us in celebrating the 30-year career of Oxnard Police Corporal Maria Peña, as we send her into retirement with gratitude and best wishes.
Corporal Peña was hired on August 15, 1994, by Chief Harold Hurtt. In a unique career twist, she was moved straight from Field Training to work in Street Narcotics. Later in her career, she served on the Traffic Unit, and in 2006, Maria was promoted to Police Corporal. She made an enormous impact on the community as Neighborhood Policing Team beat coordinator for Beat 31. Maria built relationships with community members in the La Colonia neighborhood that will live on forever. The love she has for the community and passion in the work she did is evident in the relationships she built.
Corporal Peña mentored countless young adults as an Explorer Advisor and had a dramatic impact on the youth of Oxnard. A breast cancer survivor, she proudly lead the Department's Pink Patch campaign in 2021. She was awarded the Medal of Valor in 1998, and Officer of the year in 2022.
We wish Maria and her family the very best in their next chapter. Please join us as we celebrate and congratulate Corporal Peña on her career and thank her for her 30 years of dedicated service to the residents of the City of Oxnard.

Oxnard Police Department needs to train their officers better. On 10/6/24 around 8 PM, a Dodge OPD was driving crazy fast around Brekke Elementary and not stopping at a stop sign. No sirens or light was turn on. Are they above the laws? If anything, they should abide by the laws.

I enjoyed the podcast and im very happy that this girl managed to survive her life threatening injuries. However, this case just highlights how terribly bad the training is when it comes down to de-escalating suspects that are under distress, when the officer said that "something bad is going to happen" I just knew he messed up real bad, she didnt represent a danger to anyone but herself and you can tell by her body lenguage. You can see her flashing the knife at the officer and then covering with her shirt once the officer displayed a friendly demeanor, but once he showed any sort of hostility, and specially the part where he mentions that, "something bad is going to happen" is the switch that flick her off. Personally I believe a person with better peoples skill couldve handled this situation 10x better and possibly saved her from any injuries.

I think this was real poor police work. You got a whole belt full of equipment including pepper spray, taser etc. I think this could have been solved a lot better. Even if you had to use lethal force, 3 shots? I don't care what he says, that was a poor performance. And now, getting to know this girl, imagine if you would have taken her out of this world. You got really lucky that you didn't kill her. If it were up to me, I'd have you removed from the force. I'm glad she's alive and well, I hope she lives a long happy life.

I was under the impression there was already a law stating you had to be a certain distance from not only the crosswalk but also the intersection. While I agree with the safety aspect, I feel this is just another “law” designed to get people out of their cars and make room for the non existent pedestrians and bicyclists. All these bike lanes out in for no bicycles. Sounds cost effective to me if I were insane. I also feel this is another law designed to extract money from taxpayers. Ownership of a car equals money to the government. High fuel tax, registration tax, tax on purchased oil, recycling fees for tires, etc. It’s all money extraction in a state where public transportation sucks and residents HAVE to drive a distance to do anything.
