A Sailboat's Water Tank Replacement
Sampaguita's (a 1985 Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20) built-in fiberglass water tank under the quarter berth developed osmotic blisters. I decommissioned it and installed a bladder tank under the V-berth, a new galley foot pump, and new plumbing.

A Flicka 20 Sailing the Northern Pacific Ocean
มุมมอง 6035 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is pretty much what it is, except when it isn't. The boat goes tick-tock from side to side as the following sea rolls under it. A soundtrack to fall asleep to. A motion to hypnotize you. It just goes on and on. The grey skies make it chilly and moist. Everything salty sucks up the moisture. Foulies keep you dry and warm. And a hot cup of tea......
A Flicka 20 Charging Across the Tradewinds
มุมมอง 1.2K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Beam on and reefed down, charging across the trades. Beam on is wetter, but faster. Also, I was pinned down on the starboard tack, which made the ride more comfortable. Downwind sailing in the trades is a very rolly experience which makes for less predictable motion. I spilled more things going downwind in the trades than I did beam on. Just sayin'.
Full Sail and Close Hauled - A Flicka 20 in the Northern Pacific
มุมมอง 5945 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a pretty rare occurrence: Being close-hauled with full sail is not fair winds and following seas. It only works when there is a light wind and very low seas....so, usually after a calm. I am using the full main and the 140% genoa....which means the wind wasn't light enough to call on the 140% drifter. If I cracked off, the sails would have probably started flopping. I needed to be close...

The thing about amateur video is that you don't see anything really exciting. Because then the equipment would get ruined from saltwater exposure. And if it's amateur, who can afford that?

Awesome job. The first thing you worry about is sailing. the rest of the shit comes as you can get to it.

Im thinking if you boul potatoes in sea water there would be no need to add salt...
Correct, that's how it was done and part of the joke.

Serenity. Where is this location?
North of the Marquesas, south of the equator.
Clever
great idea Josh! I've had to lower the mast to get one once!
I have a Topclimber for going aloft by myself. I haven't had to do it for retrieving a halyard, but it would be easier, faster, and even potentially less risky than lowering the mast.
Would love to see a tour of cabin set up for long distance cruising. Safety at sea. Storage of food for long hauls. And esp. an alternative head / toilet?
You'll see some glimpses of the cabin if you keep an eye out. But as my home for many years, that's my personal space and my interest in displaying it for viewing and judgment to the world for free on youtube is of little interest to me. I did add handrails to the ceiling over the settee which were invaluable. A Flicka moves alot and quicker than a bigger boat. They were added as handholds and as a way to add a lee net for sleeping on the settee. An alternative I came up with to a lee cloth. It worked great. An added advantage of this turned up. When I was standing up in front of the galley, and the boat unexpectedly rolled to starboard, the lee net caught my fall many times. sailingwithjosh.com/2022/03/22/the-resourceful-sailor-weaves-a-lee-net/ I devised a way to keep the dropboards in. sailingwithjosh.com/2024/02/27/the-resourceful-sailor-secured-sampaguitas-drop-boards/ I easily stored over three months of food using the ice box and liner storage spaces. The head was the simplest. Just a bucket and an old toilet seat. Like a home toilet, I put a little water in the bucket. I almost exclusively used it in the cockpit. Always rolly, always bracing with my hands, and sometimes wet with the spray coming aboard. But if it's going to spill or slosh, better in the cockpit than in the cabin. And much simpler and safer to dispose of. Once you're away from the US mainland, it's bucket and chuck it. It was always challenging to move anything liquid from down below in the cabin up to the cockpit. Whether a cup of tea, coffee, soup, or the bucket, spillage was a definite possibility. The movement was incredible.
@@sailingwithjosh Thanks Josh. Very helpful insights. I use the settee to sleep as well. (Half body on settee, feet in V-berth). Understand not showing world your personal space. Will keep watching for sure! Keep on sailing..!! 🙏👍🏻
I see you don’t have the stove on gimbals. Can you cook while healing at 10-15 deg.? Looks like in this video your mostly flat. Will try to post some videos of my FLICKA-20 soon.
No gimbals. What you see there is downwind so we're rolling alot. But I managed without it gimballing just fine. I only used one deep pan to cook everything and kept the contents shallow. So cooking at 10-15 degrees was accomplished.
Roger that. Less is more.!

Seen a few of your vids today. Just subscribed and liked! Thank you!!!!
Beautiful!
N offense meant you can change the Headsail without disconnecting the old one. It prevents having to go back and forth to the cockpit and you never have a fully disconnected sail. Great boat! I’m a big fan!!!!!

❤ Boat from blue waters
Loving these videos. Do you have a log/blog with more details? Was there anything about the Flicka that drove you nuts on these passages? What did you do for fresh water? And cooking?
@@jdalamo www.sailingwithjosh.com Nuts? It's a wet boat. It's a lively boat. 20 feet of living space at the dock becomes 10 feet on a proper voyage. I have water bladders and jugs. I used about 1/2 gallon per day. I had plenty, but it's heavy. Cooked every day. Propane stove, but no oven and no gimbals. Plenty of food.
Hi Josh just found your channel. Gotta say i love it .not a lot of chatter (talk) which I like, just pure sailing. By the way I just subscribed to your channel. Look forward to many more great videos . Fair winds from Queensland Australia
Great little boat!
Perfect day! No harness?

Hang in there all the best to you and yours from John in Texas
With a bone in her teeth! Very nice. I was looking for jacklines / tether / harness. Respecting personal choice.
The only 20 footer to put to sea in!!🙂
Ahhhh, glorious to watch ( I own a 1978 Flicka). Thanks.

Incredible the solitude of an ocean passage
If you ever need a boat hand on a southern cruise, please leave me know.
I'll retire in a couple years, and plan on buying a 30' or smaller boat to see as much of the world as I can. You're great motivation!
@@norml.hugh-mann great advice, I have my heart set on a contessa 26, but I'm keeping an open mind!
I think 36' or 10-11m is where the cost versus length really starts to rise, but it's also pretty dependent on how common of a make/model it is and its age.
The Rolly Tasker website will show you sail prices without having to start a discourse with a salesman, from the Co26 to the Co32 the price doubles. The same will go for rigging and paint ect. So it seems adding 2m roughly doubles everything. That being said, Josh's Flicka is 1/4 the price to refit or maintain than a 36 footer. You're right of course, after 36' the price is unobtainable to anyone save the '1%ers'
👍👍

At least you're not playing ghastly music in the background! Much nicer to hear the wind and sea.
Raw, real footage.
Im leaving a comment here, hoping it helps your videos get recommended to more people. I really like the peaceful vibe!
Hey, Josh! This is a mesmerizing video. Wow. I can almost picture myself on Sweethaven, sailing across the Pacific. Almost.
Dude, I appreciate your videos. My borderline OCD would have me tidy up that cockpit though 😂
Ha, I hear ya! On a small boat, everything is in a constant state of movement in so many ways. It takes just a minute to tidy up and about 15 seconds to explode again.
@@sailingwithjosh have you got headroom on the PS20? must be close to 6'

@@danscoltock1180 Sail balance for the wind vane and less flopping in the seas.
Where is this ?
How much space does it take inside once deflated? Have you consider a small outboard for it?
Josh: how many gallons of water you carried on this journey? Where did you store the additional water?
I carried around 60 gallons of water, which was plenty. On a 60-day passage, I used about 30 gallons of water. 1/2 gallon per person, per day. Which is about what they say. 1 gallon per for including emergencies.
