Quick note about my channel icon, that's a picture captured of my son and I many years ago when setting up a new computer. I don't want to loose it, so I'm not changing it!

Thanks for the video, David! I recently bought this bike. I'm not an experienced mechanic, but I enjoy learning, and your video has helped a lot.
I'm glad to hear it! I'll try to do more.
@@dakavanagh David, I put the carbs back in the bike, but I didn't have the success you did 😒. The bike will start with the choke but it won't idle. I'm feeling a little stuck. Not sure what my next step should be. The bike did idle before I replaced the mixture screws. So, I'm not sure if the screws are the problem or if it may be something else. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. PS, the previous screws were turned all the way in. With the new ones, I did the 2.5 turns back you recommended.
what is the STL for the case It doesnt come up on thingiverse
My year 90 fzr doesn't have a fuel level meter. Your panel looks like mine. Speedometer, rpm and temperature gauges only. I wish I had a fuel level meter. Where do you read the amount of gas?
I agree that it isn't convenient to have to guess at the fuel level. I often check the tank before getting on the bike. Then I have an idea about it. I also reset the trip odometer when I fill up. I can get 100+ miles on a tank, so that's also helpful. The reserve switch buys you some time if the bike start sputtering, but I forgot I'd already flipped it on one time and ran out about 1/2 mile from a gas station. That was a long up-hill push!
@dakavanagh I have to use my reserve switch after 250 km from filling the tank. Only once I had to switch at 200 km, but this time was after only one hour from when I had filled the tank. I had made 200 km in... 1h! 😇
@@dakavanagh You must be a strong man. I can barely move the bike on a flat surface. I also reset odometer every single time that I fully fill the tank. Mandatory!
I have a recommendation for you. It is very important to fine tune the exup valve position, and having the standard exhaust pipe, in order for the engine to run smoothly from 2000 to 11000 rpm. The pull is constant across a 5 to 1 ratio when exup valve is properly set. Jetting was carefully designed for the stock pipe. An after market pipe like yours requires to try different jets. Another good hint is replace the 17 teeth sprocket with 16. The best and cheapest apparent power increase! I tried 15 teeth also but I was leaving black marks on the pavement every time I pushed hard on 1st gear. Bike felt heavy on corners so I went to full preload on rear shock absorber, replaced the standard 130/60 with a 120/60 front tyre, and moved fork up 20mm with some minor mods on both front bars. Bike is as heavy as always but feels clearly lighter. Another benefits is that speedometer and rpm meters show the exact same angle on 4th gear. I always know if I'm ridding on 5th, 4th or 3rd. I no longer have to guess at what gear I'm driving.
My fzr1000 leaks gasoline also. It refused to start until I found out that tank was empty after too many months resting. I think leaking is after fuel pump, because it seems like it doesn't stop right away after switching ignition on and off 5 or more times in a row, but always after 7 seconds instead. It should stop quickly when reaching full pressure but I'm afraid that this never happens anymore. Maybe my gasket or sender at the tank is also defective like yours. I have never seen if there's a sender on mine. As you said... Leaking gas is... no good! Where did you find new gasket and sender?
It's really important to find out *where* the leak is. As you say, fuel leak is very bad. I often look at "partzilla.com" for parts. Once I find the part number, I shop around.. ebay, etc. You can also buy gasket material and make your own. Just be sure it's designed for fuel applications.
@@dakavanagh Thanks a lot for your super quick answers and recommendations!
I like idling below 1 thousand rpm. Adjustable idling screw of mine doesn't align well to pass the screwedriver through the hole below the plastic or rubber round grey cover. Maybe my carburators are not perfectly in place after they were removed to rebuild them? Do you have problems finding the idling screw with screwdriver through the hole?
I've been able to find the idle adjust screw pretty easily. I shine a flashlight into the hole in the frame, to be sure I know where to put the screwdriver. If it isn't close, yes, I suspect something isn't installed properly. The engine is hard-mounted, so it would have to be carbs, or how the idle screw bracket is installed.
@@dakavanagh I have to try the flashlight. Thank you!
@@josemariatrueba4568 i have an 01 thunderace.. where is that idle adjustment.. not been able to find info
@@Errol.C-nzIl There is a hole on the left side of the bike, covered by a gray plastic circle. A long screwedriver and a flashligt and bit of patience allowed me to adjust idling to 1000 rpm +/- 100 rpm as specifies the service manual.
Some of my tools are onboard sailing sportboat too. What boat have you got?
We "used to" have a Catalina 27. We've given that up to focus on other things for a while.
@dakavanagh Mine is 25 feet. Model is 747 O.D. designed and built at northern Spain, that I bought new in 2001. It's a one design racing boat for 5 or 6 with a maximum crew weight of around 800 pounds, designed by this naval engineer named Iñigo Echenique, who had designed the rudder and various parts of the Spanish America's Cup boat that raced in San Diego. My rudder is a downsized A.C. rudder huge for the size of the boat and looks like the fin of a big whale. In fact it's almost a carbon copy of those kind of fins. Most boats went to France and the class went to the smaller and easier to be trailed and raced Laser sb3, now renamed as SB20, which is a 20 footer for three. I'm from Bilbao, located in northern Spain near France, sailing the coasts of the Bay of Biscay since I was 3 months old.
@@josemariatrueba4568 800lbs.. man you have huge crew over there 😨 🇳🇿🇳🇿nz 👌
It was a surprise how clean your old fuel filter was! I will replace my fuel lines soon. Do you know what size clamps and lines are? Maybe 8mm? Thanks for sharing!
Hi! Thanks for sharing your well done jobs here. My year 1990 fzr 1000 doesn't have a fuel level sensor. What urar is yours?
Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences here. I've got a 90 fzr 1000, same as 89 model, with around 80,000 Km. The other day I found it out of gasoline. Resulting in some leaks that I will have to find. Do you have any suggestions before I pull out the tank? Apparently, the problem is after the fuel pump that never seems to reach full pressure. It stops running around 7 seconds after I switched on the ignition key. After doing so several times I saw gasoline on the floor. I've seen a diagram, and there are two pieces of fuel lines and three clamps towrds fuel filter between fuel pump and carburators. Bike seems to run perfectly well after putting a bit of gasoline but keeps leaking gas. Carburators needles and gaskets were rebuilt, and fuel filter was replaced in the process. This was some 2,000 km ago. Is it about time to replace fuel lines? Do you recommend a quick disconnect to be able to pull out the tank quicker without spilling gas in the process? I'm asking because the tank has to be removed many times.
Great to see you back David, that was really cool, I didn’t even know how they were crimped before. I see that tool making its way onto my shopping list 😂
Its not firing on all 4 cyl, you can clearly hear it. Did you manage to get it run on all 4?
I think you're right. It runs smoothly once I get it off idle, but at idle, it's not so smooth and getting it off idle takes a little coaxing. I ought to check compression, and ignition wiring. I do think cylinder 4 is a little "off" based on plug inspection.
Spray the header pipes with some water after minute or two of running and you will know which one is not firing. It sounds like it runs on only 2 cylinders when you hit the throttle.
@@Jumbojt I have a thermal camera that attaches to my phone. It shows them all heating up, but I think 4, not as much.
@@dakavanagh They will heat up but not as nearly as those which run properly.
Thanks buddy, very helpful, I'm getting my 1993 EXUP running after being stood up for a long while.
Ciao hai montato le pinze della r1 2002 ? Vanno bene per attacco originale? Devi fare modifica attacco oppure plug e play
They were plug-n-play, but you'll want to upgrade the master cylinder as well to get good brake feel.
We're did you get a crank sensor
I don't think I did. Was that mentioned in the video? I often get parts online. Babbits or eBay
Did you have issues with sticky throttle when reassembling the carbs? As soon as i start to tighten the two long bolts that go through the rack, everything starts to bind.
Hi, I didn't notice in your video if you tightened the boots after setting the carbs. Did I miss it?
I remember tightening those screws, and I changed them to socket head cap screws so I could use a ball-end Allen wrench. Some of the angles can be tricky.
Thanks for the video David! I'm restoring a near complete '87. It sat for a long time (guessing 10 - 15 years) outside but it's nearly all original. It took a number of attempts for me to get all 4 carbs back to life but I got it running and the sound is just amazing. I had a FJ1100 back in 84 and the sound is similar but there's just something about the sound of the FZR that is just magical. It's pretty obvious Yamaha started out making musical instruments.
Good score. I look forward to a demonstration. You have many sought after accessories.
I replaced the Y axis rods with linear bearings. My prints are way better now

Would you happen to know the part number from where you order the throtle shaft seals and o rings

@@dakavanagh Score, I was recently trying to figure the same issue, South Bend wrenches were so high and a strike wrench is outrageous. Just did what you did.
HELLO !!! WE DONT SEE THE DETAILS BECAUSE OF CAMERA. !!! FROM GREECE !!!
What wrenches and or sockets did you use? Whitworth or?
This was my first show ever in my life. Was so awesome to see my favorite band.
Your original brakes are better. I've had FZR 1000's from the Genesis to the thunderace, an 99 R1, Xjr 1200, and I'm puting on the Sumitomo calipers with the Geness style master cilinders on my current bikes. My experience shows that if in perfect condition, these work best. And IMO they also look best, especially the cast master cylinders.
The feel of the stock brakes can be improved with a larger master cylinder and that is part of what I've done on mine. I've also shed some weight by switching out the calipers, so 2 wins in my book. Of course YMMV.
@@dakavanagh By larger master cylinder you mean larger diameter piston right? Doent that decrease the force on the pads? i.e. you need to squeeze more for the same effect? What is the advantage? More "feel"? Less travel distance for the brake lever?
Im dealing with my brakes today, I have 10 eized calipers in the oven with 36 pistons in total lol. Im debating what brakes to rebuild. All of them are 4 pot and 6 pot Sumimotos. I have a pair of blue pots that are probably in better condition and I'm not even bothering with them. I never liked the way they feel and I don't know why. Like I said the best combo I've experienced is 4 pot Sumimotos with the master cylinder with the cast trapezoid fluid reservoir from the '88 FZR Genesis. The ones from the Exup are the same calipers with a different master cylinder, they didn't feel as good, and the ones from the tunderace are blue pots, with a brembo master cylinder, if I remember correctly, and they felt worst of all. I'm planning on using the Trapezoid master cyl with 6 pot Sumimoto calipers from a '94 foxeye FZR. What are your thougts on the subject? I've never dealth with brakes before other than changing out pads.
PS Sorry if my comment came off as a bit abnoxious, I didn't mean it that way.
@@bobby89bobbyAb no worries. just conversing here.
Is this the last video? What's going on with the Beeza?
My wife keeps asking also. I'll get back to it soon!
That is very nice and likely has wear on the low end (of the spectrum of wear) for a lathe that age. The face on the V-way that faces you is not the critical face. The force of machining pushes on the face away from you. Look for scraping and/or a ridge on the back side.
Thanks! I checked the back face and there is no perceivable lip worn there either, just no flaking. I'll certainly get this together with new felts and proper way-oil.
Hi David - Can you provide the model number of the gold spots?
I often look stuff like this on partzilla. They will show you other models that have that part, which helps when shopping ebay or other places. Nice work 👌 question dude I have 1992 fzr 1000 just wondering what’s the battery voltage should be as I measured and it’s between 14 and 15v is it correct ?
I think that around 14.0 to 14.5 volts above 2000 rpm is alright. It depends on rpm and... meter accuracy, battery charge state, and a maybe a little on temperature also. 12.6 volts at around 20°C is what my meter reads the day after I had run the engine. Volts drop down to 12.3 if it's colder in the garage.
where did you buy the carburetor
These came on the bike.
Hey, Do you use Cura? If u do, can you make a video of settings for Anet A8?
Music RUINED the sound
Perhaps not a great choice. At speed, the wind noise takes over.
I have the same model, bought new in '68, sold it, it changed hands twice, and now I got it back! Also a rusted up crusty barn stored project. Engine turns over and has compression. We need to keep in touch and compare notes!
Haven't seen an XJ550 in years. The ones sold here in NZ had twin front discs.
Outside the US, they had twin disks and an oil cooler.
@@dakavanagh Ok, didnt even notice it didnt have a cooler.:-)
One of the best things i ever invested in for working on my 80s bikes was an ultrasonic cleaning bath, so many times ive cured a rough running bike by giving the carbs a good clean in the Ultrasonic bath, and some new (stock sized) jets. The difference from cleaning them by hand and the bath, is night and day. They are reasonably priced too, and useful for so much other stuff as well.
I got an ultrasonic cleaner and ran the cabs through it last year. I feel like I still have a vacuum leak, but I know the carbs are totally clean and all the seals are fresh.
they make the best snow forts.
how nice, mine looks and prints like shit. The extruder stepper sometimes doesn't even move for some reason.
Sorry yours isn't working so well. When a stepper isn't moving properly, it could be wiring or the driver on the board. With the control panel, can you command the extruder to move both directions while you check the wiring? There's a facebook group? facebook.com/groups/1068531466501015
