Aleks Byrd is a knitwear designer and illustrator. When it comes to designing and illustrating knitwear, Aleks Byrd loves to work with many different strands. With a heritage tied to three countries - USA, Estonia and Canada - she has plenty of ideas and inspiration running through her, but tends to play with her Estonian roots in particular, weaving it into new patterns in order to produce modern and unique designs with a connection to the past. As a knitting ambassador for modern traditional Estonian knitting, Aleks has shared her knowledge of the little-known traditional techniques by putting a fresh twist on them for wearable designs. She also teaches these methods in her popular workshops. It's her design background in illustration coupled with her unique ideas and love of colour that shine through in her collection of designs that are fun and rewarding to knit for all levels of knitters.

Thank you, this is the same as weaving on a machine, except these floats are on the knit side. Will try this

Can you also make it into a double braid by using 4 stitches instead of 2 in the video? Just curious how it would look like.
Aleks, this is brilliant!!! Thank you for sharing this technique!❤
Thank you. I'm so glad you like it. I figured it out while working on the Sitsijakk cardigan I will be releasing in October. It's makes for the best finish on cardigans.

Lorsque l’on tricote en rond les boules sont inclinés vers la gauche ?
Спасибо!!!
Wow you are making "twist stich " very complicated, its quite a simple stitch in England anyway!
Cool! In Latvia we call it Latvian Braid 😄
Heym Aleks! Thankyou for sharing this fantastic traditional techniques. I saw you in an interview talking about a "windproof" technique. It kind of sound familiarvto me. Is ir about twusting floars in the back of the piece? Could you do a video tutorial in it? Thankyou!
Thank you for your lovely comment. The mention of "windproof" in an interview was about how traditional Estonian knits are done with a very tight tension and small knitting needles so that the knit fabric is very tight or dense that it is windproof. It is not a technique for doing a video tutorial as it has to do with how tight you are knitting.
Thanks Aleks! Do you have any videos about the jogless join? Thanks again
Hi Andrea! the jogless Kihnu vits video is now online showing both Continental and English throwing style.
@@AleksByrdDesigns Super! Thank you (I also found the instructions in your book 😉)
Muy claro para principiantes
Absolutly amazing !! Thank you so much !!!
i just watched the video but the thought came to me...what if you knit backwards...would you need the large loop? I'll have to try!
The book on amazon is $73.90! (Estonian Knitting I: Traditions and Techniques) Is there a cheaper one that you can suggest? I would love to do maybe one or two projects only. Thank you!
The Estonian Knitting I book is available mostly from its Estonian publisher Saara Kirjastus. If you would like another book option I cover this technique and more alongside projects in my book Traditions Revisited - Modern Estonian Knits which is available from Laine Publishing and many yarn shops worldwide.
If you are in North America have you tried using internet library loan?
Is the contrast yarn always a double strand...i presume so it is more visible? Can you recommend a pattern book for beginners?
The contrast color is held double or a heavier weight / thickness to create a stronger impact than having to knit at a very tight and fine tension like the traditional knits. If you would like projects ideas using this technique you can select from individual patterns I have available on Ravelry and www.aleks-byrd.com such as Elupuu hat, Hilja mitts, Kallike and Agnes cowls, Seli sweater and cardigan. I also have a book called Traditions Revisited - Modern Estonian Knits which is available from Laine Publishing and many yarn shops worldwide which includes beginner friendly roosimine patterns.
Awesome.
Awesome. Thank you so much.
