    I 100% agree, I feel like most of these games should be categorized as low-stakes resource management instead of "cozy." (I think cuphead is a cozy game, but that's only because I've played it so much so I absolutely get your take)

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh absolutely! Or as others called them, farm sims. Cosy definitely is more of a hyper-genre (thanks to another commenter for that cool term) as it should indicate that a game is for the majority of players a cosy experience, instead of being about a very specific type of gameplay. If you show people a gameplay trailer or let them play for a few hours and immediate response is "wow this looks/is so cosy!", that's a cosy game c: Will admit though, I'm not sure if I'd see cuphead as a cosy game hahahah. I haven't gotten the chance to play it (yet) but I know that I'd be throwing my controller a few times at least c:

    Great video, I like the Nakey Jakey style greenscreen skits. While I thin video game music is amazing, diverse and can deffinetly fill up concert halls when played live (and should be played by orchestras). The argument that it's replacing classical music is just not true. It's like saying rock replaced jazz music when jazz got less popular and mainstream. I do agree that classical music has quite a few issues in this day and age like an aging concert going audience and a relience on older music from known composers. And one way professional orchestras are both staying profitable and attracting a new audience is by performing movie and videogame soundtracks. But these concerts don't replace classical music. I have a lot more thoughts about this subject as someone who plays classical music and loves video games. If you wanna know more about the underlieng theorie behind video game music check out the channel 8-bit music theory Or if you want an accecable way to get to know more about classical music check out David Bruce (a classical composer making videos on youtube) and of course two set violin. (And sorry for my spelling mistakes, enlish is not my first language)

      Holy crap I won my first award! My video had a point now!! Wait. Does that mean I lose the award again? Okay in all seriousness though, yes. You could say that about literally every genre of game, except almost every genre of game has a very specific name that often even contains the games included. FPS obviously having shooter in it, city builder games obviously being about building cities. But Cosy games doesn't specify the games that should he included outside of that they should be cosy. Tactical games or RPG's are great example of similar genre's which aren't very specific and surprise! they are incredibly broad in the types of games they contain. Meanwhile thanks to whomever defined cosy games, it's 99% farming sims, even though cosy is super subjective. Even sports games have more variety in gameplay than cosy games currently, with there being a ton of different sports with different rules and gameplay systems. So, yeah. I don't find the video that pointless c; Thanks for the watch and the comment though!

      @iRywo 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I never said other genre's didn't have similar issues. My problem lies more with that while fps very much puts the constraint in the name (shooter), cosy games doesn't, at all. Who had the authority to define cosy games in a way that almost only includes farming sims? As another commenter put it fantastically well, cosy game is more a hyper genre, something highly personal to you. If we were to see cosy games as those games that the grand majority would call cosy, there'd be a massive variety in cosy games which fits because again, cosy is not as constrictive c:

      @@iRywo a lot of people associate with farming games, but thats the name of that genre - farming games. The sims 4 could also be considered a cozy game, but its a life simulation. Games like dorf romatik is also a cozy game, but its a relaxed city builder. Or like some puzzle games. FPS games are all "the same" but they arent. Not all of them are ww2 simulators. @iRywo 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Surprisingly enough, farming simulator technically ABSOLUTELY counts as a cosy game, which is exactly why I made the video. Sure there's some slight variety of the types of games within the genre's (style, theme, gameplay systems), but inherently a cosy game should be cosy, and games that aren't should be included (which they sometimes are due to the existing definition). Association with different genres isn't an issue, but as I mentioned in the video, the definition of cosy games is just incredibly restricted to mainly be farming games as it is right now.. with the ocassional exception like Dorfromantik c:

    I 100% feel that Subnautica is a cozy game (to me). I also consider Red Dead Redemption a cozy game. If the term had been on my radar back in 2012 I would have said Skyrim was a cozy game as well. I can handle some stress in my cozy games. I love Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing and so many "typically" cozy games too, but plenty of other games with stressful elements give me the same feelings of coziness.

      I think if the majority of the game is cosy instead of stressful, it should be allowed to join the genre! Games like RDR have so much downtime where you can just travel, explore and experience an adventure without any stress c: I think Subnautica has its moments for sure, but it also really depends on your fear of the unknown/underwater. Because that really changes the experience from cosy to pure terror lol. Thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoyed the video! C:

    no you can't define Subnautica as cozy. yes you can define what you described ABOUT Subnautica as cozy, that part of subnautca IS kinda cozy, but the full game SUBNAUTICA, the whole thing, no, it's not a cozy game. You can take the cozy parts of ANY OTHER GAME and say they fit the description. You went to a tangent about the definition of a Cozy game for a piece you found on Wiki[pedia (which you called Google twice). The "cozy" must simply apply for the whole game. You can feel 'cozy' with any game, but that doesn't make 'any' game a cozy game. also i thought the video was an exploration of the similarity of the cozy games one to another rather than the definition of cozy???

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It was initially a exploration of the similarity of cosy games, until I started looking for definitions and found that they are the reason for cosy games being incredibly similar. But, the reason I added subnautica as an example for fitting in a lot of parts but totally not being a cosy game is exactly what you are saying. You can say any game is cosy with certain parts, but that doesn't necessarily make it an actual cosy game, which I also tried to emphasize with mentioning Subnautica c: I personally don't agree that cosy has to apply for the whole game, dredge being a perfect example of that. It's a very cosy game 95% of the time, until you have to escape a sea monster or keep an eye out while sailing in the night. Doesn't make the overall experience any less cosy though? Personally if a game is more than 70% or 80% of the time cosy, then it's a cosy game. Which would automatically exclude games like subnautica which features some cosy mechanics but where a larger part of the game is tense and can be stressful. I called it google because its the first thing you find when you google it, theres a reason Included the title/source of where it was pulled from by google, but that doesn't change that it was found through google c;

    a lot of farming sim type games (stardew valley, coral island, ooblets, animal crossing, etc) are considered and get called cozy games, so i think it's led to the misbelief that cozy games = farming sims, as if it's their only genre (part of the issue could be that the term originated as a term used to describe certain popular farming sims). but the genre of these games IS farming sim/simulation/life sim, _not_ cozy game. and to be fair, i do feel like "cozy game" has evolved and will continue to evolve to become it's own official genre, but it still won't be only farming sims. the whole idea of a cozy game has always been just a game that makes you feel happy, calm, and--as the term suggests--cozy. it usually has a relaxing score, either cute, pretty, or very original/stylized art, and laid back quests/objectives (i would add there are no stressful decisions, your character generally is not able to die so there doesn't need to be a life count system, there should be minimal to no combat featured, and should not have psychological elements, gore, or horror. yes, some people might find those things "cozy," but i think we all know that that's a very uncommon perspective that the majority wouldn't share. just because there are people who exist that are allergic to sunlight does not mean sunlight should be included in a list of common allergies just because it can technically be defined as an allergy for some). games like this do commonly tend to be sim games and farming games because the nature of those games is everything people tend to seek out in cozy games. technically any game can be a cozy game on an individual/personal level, but obviously any kind of big action game or shooter would not fall under the commonly understood category of "cozy game," no matter how cozy it might be to that one person who loves to play it lol. there are recommendation videos and lists out there of non farming sim games for people who want cozy but don't want to play another farming sim. personally, the ones i mentioned above, although technically farming sims, are pretty different to each other as far as storylines go, so i recommend them to people who are hesitant about playing "just another farming sim." honestly i don't even like stardew valley, but i love coral island and ooblets. they feel like more than just farming sims to me, thanks to their unique stories and objectives. and ooblets especially is verrrry cozy. but i actually also consider jurassic world evolution 2 to be a cozy game. it has lovely music, and you just build parks and care for dinosaurs. there are a few things that can go wrong, but it doesn't get particularly intense at any point really so i think it qualifies. tiny glade is a new game that just came out, it's a very cute, stylized building sim, and it's already widely considered a cozy game. there's also unpacking, probably one of the most well-known cozy games that isn't a farming sim.

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I did not come across Ooblets or Coral Island! So I'll definitely be checking them out. I can definitely more agree with your definition then the one that's findable online.. especially because the one online pushes so hard for farming sims instead of remaining open for alternatives that are still cosy, just not that exact thing perse c: When I initially started writing the script I really felt like they were all the same and then through research I realised that the reason for that was just the definition being restrictive/vague. Some well known cosy games don't even necessarily fit within that definition, like tiny glades. Unless you count the building as nurturing c; Thanks for watching and for the comment, I'm excited to check your suggestions out!

You can choose to just play one day, or you can go to sleep in game and then keep playing! Cozy can be different to each person, dark, light, realistic, stressful maybe? It varies for sure. Podcast worthy? But I mean cozy feels like Moe does for anime trope terms of vague but we know it when we see it. Moeblobs are just slice of life and relaxing. I've sent many I get it. But I still seek out more sometimes. Seeing job or hobby anime is one thing of enjoyable by the setting, fair concepts by that setting, sometimes a goal of say building a video game, peocess happens or common retail customers or whatever but seeing more people doing nothing or just eating food, chilling you only get so far. To me if the dialogue is good enough then sure, like a sitcom can, or romance or drama if done well. The vibe of a country side is one thing or something but to me if it has good enough dialogue/themes then for them doing nothing then I don't mind the activities and sites but if not then it's just bad and it's wow it's calming I can do that with music then the vibe by setting/talking about nothing. I can go outside to some grass or talk to people and not need a show for that. Because unless it's funny or convincing enough, then pass on vibes and more on better entertainment not always story that's epic/gameplay substance of course. Atmosphere isn't a great 'genre' it's a thing for a reason though. Farming Sims just happen to be the more common example with so many the past few years then a feeling type of meaning. But less stressful I mean farming, fishing, Sims, conversation/story games. Anything easy for casuals that doesn't over complaints their brains basically is how it seems to me. XD Like a romance or drama or soap opera. But yes a good drone or chill song and a by the fire vibe or whatever. Like unpacking tells something while being simple. But it's also not anything that hard to understand either. Iget it. I don't think it's bad. Just eh. There. But many of those games usually associated with it are boring personality and eh game design. I love a good city builder or the Sims but they aren't the same anymore either. Indies are just as bad as AAA, but it depends on the developer, what gets cut, what strength their ideas have. I can give them some slack but to a degree. I don't buy ma y Indies I stick to physical but enough research of good ones, enough physical played Indies, enough videos of some. Yeah........ That and old and new game design. Potential/personality. Immersion. Deep gaming understanding of why we enjoy the separated and cutting out the stuff we don't need. Some stand out for sure but those with inspiration are good...... I mean nostalgia or lack of ideas and will trace over and clone something then good competition to put a good spin on something. XD Cough cough. Good Indies have inspiration randomly The Witness just dots. Sounds Nintendo Game & Watch calculator button pushing type inspiration stuff. Pthers just prototyping ideas, good use of a human/items/abilities/animals not so bland and basic, insects. Movesets and level design not game design so realistic or RPG levels of dull into other genres and their depth lacks. Their worlds/culture/dialogue isn't enough. Tropes or not many see through. Average people don't care or pay attention. Some people do in what fhey see, see between genres, games, music, movies/tv shows, books, anything else. Design deraild, ehats new, whats a spin on it well, refinements that make sense then those doing it to not be sued. Refinements that feel genuine not milkable. Artstyles, emotional easy to manipulate, easy to understand or lot od grind, depth, things people don't understand or think about. PGR2 too restrictive of car power fanatasy in all mode so audiences complained. I hate FM6 but irs remixing wasn't fun while PGR2 was. 3 open and still good but xompared to a NFS Shift 1 or something else your like why so easy and skippable content. Compared to a GT4 I mean its open but inviting of ofher rewards which the orher doesn't feel as much need of doing other then to do it.for progress. Sure using AAA examples but they still relate of content handling, creativity and other details you can compare regardless of Inxie or AAA vudget irs fhe execution, time to develop, the depth, the ideas mixing well, actually being good competition not tracing and copying. If ma y ideas for foam ghen Foamstars has mode. Or Biomutant why boring apocalyptic animals or goode game/stray/little kitty big city being generic animals when 5th gen platformers had more exciting movesets. Ghr missions and worlds make sense for tv shows but eh game design too simple but not ss exciting, easy to understand but in turn not that fun, modern design but basic and boring I find. Astrobot is good but the personality ghen agme design I sre ghe game design and go eh it alcks, oh similar to this irs not there irs no different to my problems woth Indir platformers the depth or pacing versus presentation cover up. It's like a UI, I care about navigation but also ghe look of it. Boring boxes is not fun. Give me something exciting and good to navigate. Navigation os your game design, and preparation is your art style/viduals, it may have substance bur the game design dord not. Ears and being small can be anything, helicopter ears, good hearing for stealth, an attack. Not jyst wow cosmetic ears. Aka depth ideas ghen judt a costume to fill in ghe world. Survival games I see similar, full of Indies. Some use their own ideas, others too realistic of tech and not as good as many tech mdos in Minecraft that did experiment more, but gamey cut out in some.gamss which is fair, others copy paste big games but put good sojn on it others too much and not enough spin on it. Gamey or fantasy ideas make it fun, too simple of gamey cutting things for fun or too realistic is just boring. Those willing to prototype ideas, those woth will to be creative are greatm those not will milk and clone because they have no good ideas. Competition is just said both AAA/Indies. Old games gave me inspiration. Modern games give me lacking modes in racing games to be as dumbed down and more branding/car model details and tire treds. Very few racing Indies are mode then nostalgia only few I've seen are original and not a Sega Rally, Outrun, Micro Machines clones. Cozy just rip off each other for money then genuine ideas. Trend following then actual effort. Platformers feel dull and empty in a modern way while also getting a apsd as fheir lacking talent, sure ghey don't need elaborate things but even ghen some simplr had great pacing of levels or abilities these do not. Gaming isn't the same anymore. old.gamds inspire me with more ideas modern ones lack. Old games wre more and experimental and fun.

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I partially agree and partially don't c: I think while copy pasting games is an issue for a lot of game devs (both indie and triple a), There are plenty of devs that really take on a different approach and change the feel of a concept completely. COD obviously feels the same year to year, same with the Forza Horizon games and of course the Fifa games. But, while it's also football (soccer if you're american), Rocket league is completely different in feeling, playstyle and experience. The main gameplay is the same, get the ball in the goal and defend your own. But thanks to it's execution it's a wildly different game from others. Same counts for games like Darkest Dungeon, Dave the Diver and many others. They might be inspired by others, but they still really do live as their own game. Taking inspiration isn't an issue, but copy pasting is for sure and it's sadly happening way too much :c

      @@iRywoThat's fair I don't agree with everything I've said either and it's a bit muddled as well. XD Copying for assets to fill in can have a place but inspiration hmm. Cozy to me sounds like moeblobs or iyashiki anime. Relaxing, not much going on. I have seen many, if dialogues or activities good then fine but seen many with fair jobs, fair ways their roles are, fair goals in some and assume they aren't but just wow their lives, a farm, a taking in laying down on grass, whatever food/Adventures I mean sure.... I guess of doing things day to day. Vibes the 'genre' is such a 'ok sure' thing to me. So farming Sims, city builders & atmosphere/whatever comfort examples, stressful & dark or relaxing/safe I guess. Can feel enough emotion, logic & more in other ways then a cozy game does but whatever. Cozy or a vibe, relaxing, podcast like I get that but yes most as cozy games are farming Sims, city builders and more close to real life logic easy games for casuals when many casuals games to us hardcore are also fun but it's how they go about it. Oh of course like I said the Witness, or others I hadn't but many point out, of their game design, dialogue, parody of a genre and more we all know from Undertale to whatever else and add their own spin. I respect Undertale as a parody, a good take on Earthbound and others it's inspired by as well as the new mechanics it has different and it's bizarre world. Or RPG maker games. I don't play them but understand the appeal. I could say other racing games modes, mechanics and more but I'd go on and on for too long due to my research of them. Just driving is a load of nonsense. Sure it is but would I play a racing game to race or to have 5+ different modes/event types. It's like a shooter with only team Deathmatch then other ideas. They can have 1 mode and focus on it with updates or have various modes and more audiences interested. Why else is Forza Motorsport 8 so boring. Horizon series to me is just more boring then Burnout Paradise. I don't care for open world racing games but even for as ok Test Drive Unlimited was Solar Crown looks stale and generic in comparison. Many arcade ones have more mixes of things. Juiced 2 has 3+ drift modes. They didn't need to but did. That's effort, prototyping and more. Games with fair level design and fair rewards/back tracking that make sense and is fair or fun then tedious. Undercovering them to be fun. The sense of exploration. How players do it. Heard about Plucky Squire and it looks good but heard from someone that yeah the worlds and personality is a bit disappointing when the concept art is more exciting then the world's they ended up with and it can happen for sure. A Devs vision and audience can vary but the immersion or creativity with that and what you do in worlds not wonder around a recreation and have boring missions. There is a reason I preferred good mechanics/platformer type ones like Sunset Overdrive, Gravity Rush or Infamous Second Son, fun varies side missions. While Spiderman 2018 even if a fair game felt to me more fun doing puzzles like Insomniac did with Ratchet well then the generic outposts and everything else. Tower defence of sunset overdrive and fair platforming side missions and regular side missions, good variety. Then it fits Spiderman but I wasn't having fun. Even 1 ground pound aka 1 ability side quest was a bit eh. To me infamous besides the more gamey good/Bad system then dynamic elements of it experiencec in other PS3/360 era games. The story was so casual audience mission tasks and the side missions were more interesting. But yeah I don't need 100% new concepts just a good spin on them to be happy enough and not question it. Good movesets, level design, good use of gear a character has whether cozy or hardcore audience. I can enjoy a party game if the ideas are fun enough. I found Pikmin 4 a disappointment because other then ice Pikmin, Oatchi was more 5 day bad on replays and waiting the players time, more restrictive onions/flowers, bad gyro when I wanted to use it. Character creator and good night mode but lacks depth it just needed that but more. It's a lot of weird changes, grind and casual as well. It's weird. Feel the same with FE Engage. Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft doing it not just third parties, Indies with only so much ideas on them it's just eh. More money mindset then creativity and taking time more mindset. Viewers to TH-camrs comparison as well. I know somewhat how you or others make videos but I do my own style (different channel then this one commenting with, improved since this channel). COD used to experiment though they still do but in a more bland way. MP has fair ideas but more in quality of life then dramatic enough. I don't play gave up at BO3 campaign, no co-op, less exciting ideas too. Cutting more corners as well. Like their cancelled games even 360 era were enough to show while ma y studios killed off or had ideas to support the machine that is COD they were still creative concepts, not anymore though. Sports games used to be good then got repetitive and lazy we all know that. Mario Sports games got less Mario personality and mechanics suited to it and more those characters and the bare minimum of the sport, with Ultra Smash to others. I don't even play them but can go oh yes Mario Sunshine type mud or piranha plant on the court in GameCube entry to a mega mushroom and basic content yeah you aren't fooling anymore Camelot. Let alone the other Sports games as well. Rocket League sure it's soccer/football with cars.. But GTI Club did it with 2 soccer modes, tomato throwing and a bomb mode. On PSP. Rocket League Devs did the same game as a Psn game on PS3 just as Rocket Powered Hyper Cars or something. Just more polish and more music deals like a rhythm game with packs I guess I just know Monstercat has music with the game nothing more I don't play RL/other presentation now. I don't think the Switch is great but it fills a space. I don't hate Rocket League or Switch fills in a space but I still expect more because I've looked at the past, I've got ideas and I'm not disappointed just know more potential can be done but doesn't because audiences sales or understanding getting less exciting in games or hardware gimmicks anymore. Rocket League is a game like Fortnite I respect for their design even if not for me. Minecraft I can play vanilla but play modded, I understand it for 10+ years with tech mods, quality of life and so on, a lot in 10 years, many modloaders then those blind to how many more then Forge XD The simple to use mechanics, endless possibilities and eh mob votes and other garbage more so 1.13+ it's just getting worse. Those you brought up while heard of if they have the stand out design I assume then I agree. Tunic I get why, I think it's overrated because of nostalgic it is to older games but the design I can understand why it's appealing to people in a good way besides the vocal outcomes I mostly get the impression of because people don't always talk gameplay much. Or how it looks only so much is conveyed of its greatness. Like seeing Hades clones I'm like I guess they have some differences but others are just lazy. I think games need more time in the oven, more time, if have to waste that money offer the personality or enough of a concept,, have more creative worlds, mechanics, stories do the job unless a walking Sim or visual novels and story is the focus by all means but it has to land. Red Steel 1&2 or Mario Rabbids both sequels are the best version, I assume same with Left For Dead 2 as well. Portal eh 2 is more out there but prefer 1 had less issues with it. But still. Seeing good Indie photography games or good Drawn To Life successors (how I see the one with the dog and colouring the world, it's obviously more then that but you kind of get my point, or whatever like it's cool. But yeah the more I research the more I get disappointed. I do need to set my expectations no doubt but still. Some are just random ideas and that can happen, others think longer about it and it lands, other times gets cut, other times too overboard, others people prototype, others have good understanding of a Metroidvania, Zelda clone or something else for sure but understand the great, the core elements, the hidden elements and why they felt that way, what made them impactful moments in those games. Not all get that. Metroidvanias people used emulators for and dissected everything I can tell the quality there for sure and the minds behind them of passion in the world design to the gameplay. You can watch any TH-camr and go oh I can do that yet they don't have the script, the personality of off the cuff, the insight, on what to say, how to say it, and so on. Sure let's play to retrospectives to analysis and more are all very different but some people are just too simple about it with playing/editing and others have a real knowledge and personality that get them by. It requires a lot of looking at creators, how they do things, why they do things, not to an insane degree we don't need 100% logic I get that. XD Got to have some good other elements in there but still. The values are felt for sure. Either way good video. XD Keep up the good work. Respect the comment, I respect my comment is a bit messy it's fair to disagree on parts for sure, no offence at all. Not from US, Aussie so yes soccer besides our own football. XD I get sports ruled even if not a sports type clearly by my long comments and weird research/points I make. XD I can make a bad scripts worth Unjust don't because I just don't have that kind of editing but I do have the ideas/research to it. I'll make a video like these points some day. Maybe. Just more basic. I enjoy videos like these. Breaking down a topic, comparison of games, and so on.

    I like the critically acclaimed cozy game Dark Souls. Once you get to firelink shrine after beating the game it's a cozy campfire simulator game. You just sit back and listen to the cozy theme song. Just don't talk to the creepy guy sitting over there trust me. Really though that song is super cozy. Jokes aside i think anything that gives you a cozy vibe could be a cozy game, you don't need a checklist to identify feelings. Having something fit into a defined genre can be helpful but we shouldn't put such hard boundaries on peoples art. A rigid genre tends to trend towards the checklist mentality and losing what could make the games unique. I loved the cozy blanket for the video, it made me smile o7

      If you overlook the dark and the souls, it's the cosiest game in existence! Especially if you accept fate and the safety of campfires c: but I completely agree! I don't have an issue with a vague definition, as long as the majority of a game fits with that feeling. Knowing I can play a game like Dredge, which is cosy for the biggest part and then gives some spookiness occasionally is just perfect and having a category for those types of games would be fantastic! Thanks for watching! And yeah the blanket seemed too good not to do c:

    • @iRywo

      It's specifically a budget difference. Triple A has high budgets for production and marketing, so often times massive teams are working on the games and they broadly advertise. Indie typically is a small company/team or even a single person (think stardew valley). They generally have a lower budget, don't focus as much if at all on marketing and are often times smaller games, though there are always exceptions c:
