Holley Sniper to Porsche 911

I fabricated a custom intake using some Porsche parts, and a Holley Sniper EFI setup. Throttle response is pretty nice. This video is literally the second start up of the motor. I love that it takes less than a 1/2 second cranking to start. I love the idle. It hasn't even gone into learning mode yet. For all my Porsche originalists... CIS sucks!! (what it had)

So have you taken it to a track and seeing what your top speed is with it yet?
Let's generically say that at 130 I lift because I don't trust the aerodynamics any further.... but it has a little more left in it ......
@@r.arabian3056 I’ve been thinking about getting a 914 for my son and maybe dropping in one of those six-cylinder engines put a turbo on it. I wonder if you could put a turbo on the four-cylinder
@@jamesmurphy1480 This is a turbo 4... EJ 20 with 20 lbs boost. I am unsure you would need to add a turbo to a 6, they are pretty powerful in their own right, more so than a Porsche 6...
Stunning car. People get caught up with HP numbers, this old car is so small ands light it doesn't take much, and you wouldn't want to ruin the weight distribution with a big engine. ngl, if it were me I'd keep the original engine. The fun is in the twisties anyway.
Big 914 series fan as a former owner. .. First Porsche actually; a one-owner '73 yellow 1.8 w/accessory pkg. fog lights, console & alloys. . Drove that puppy from 1975 to 1980. .... Great pictures of your outing. .. I stayed with the brand Porsche all these years. .. I'm an original '98 Carrera S (993) owner. Ordered new,, - option loaded ... in the garage as we speak. .. Aircooled baby..
ugly cars more FIAT than Porsches. Why spend all that money why???
I take it you've never driven one then............
Enjoy your Prius pup.
@@georgelevin6134 thanks but I drive a 911 hecause I am not gay.
Robby, I was there in my blue 911 with my brother 'Shivers' great vid, may I use the drone footage from your film please?
Yes!!! Was great meeting you!!! Have at it!
@@r.arabian3056 Thank Robby! See you next time. Kool footage.
The engine sounds surprisingly good, as if it is overjoyed to be freed - well done!
So I picked up a used 2300 2 barrel and trying to test it on a 3.5 litre 911 engine with some meaty cams. Using a similar looking collector box/manifold like yours. But for some reason, it is just a pig to get to run and stay running. I'm using the stock CDI ignittion system and feeding the tachout output from the 14 pin connector to the holley. Does it need anything else or should it 'just work'?
Fuel pressure is key. Make sure you have a gauge and it is spot on. Holley is sensitive to coil and ignition I run a 123 ignition and coil. Also how did you plumb the temp sensor. You got to run it off oil temp and finally make sure the 02 sensor is in spec and proper distance. It should run if you put in the proper data to the little computer (cubic inches etc…)
@@r.arabian3056my pump is the original Bosch that's from an EFI car. The Holley has it's own regulator right?
Affirmative.
@@r.arabian3056 got it to run but soon after the rpm signal goes nuts and then the sniper turns itself inside out.
@@911engineguy Check the electrical connections Holley is very specific, and if you call them, they will ask you about your splices.... if they are not really solid, it does its own thing.. Sounds like you are getting there... go back through their instructions and check each step. Verify the fuel pressure, don't rely on the old "CIS pump should be good". Timing is obviously important; computer setup; return line setup; electrical.. AIR LEAKS.... did I mention AIR leaks?? they are a killer to the setup and Porsche's "amazing" design of intake runners etc can allow air in and that will throw it all off. Start it and spray with water / soap or the chemical of your choosing (propane etc..) and see if you are leaking. I had this happen and I chased it for some time.. my mounting nuts had vibrated loose and air was entering...this falls into the "ask me how I know"... Before you think it is the Sniper, double check it all and then check it again.
914 Love...
Good for a 2.0 type 4 for my 914?
You would have to do the homework on that application. Custom manifold and this would be the only option, and it supports up to 350 HP which still may flow too much... www.holley.com/products/fuel_systems/fuel_injection/sniper_efi/sniper_1-_and_2-barrel_systems/sniper_efi_2gc/parts/550-866
I use pilkington spray foam glass cleaner I've also used wd40 but the honest to god most important thing is to make sure you've got a clean surface around the pinch weld and keep it wet and slick it literally takes about 10 min when your going back with new rubber always lay it out in sun or winter job leave it in the heat all night before the job cause the new rubbers can be a mf lol specially when you got that zipper with the chrome oh my God
How is it running now and how did you do the intake?
Actually ran good, pulled good, amazing little setup. I did have a backfire and no pop off valve so I am sourcing a new CIS airbox to remake it. I manufactured and designed a mounting plate for the 4 barrel patter to mate to the CIS airbox. While it is being re-done, I am running my triple webers. Gas mileage was way better too.
Probably a cheaper choice than doing a Porsche update.
Did you have to change the injectors?
NOW PUT THE WIDE BODY WITH FAT TIRES ON FOR THAT LAMBO
Wow, great! I'm going to try that. How do you tell the Holley software what the motor's temperature is? I know it normally needs a coolant temperature sensor. Did you just opt for the oil temperature instead?
Hi Neils. Yes. You plumb the water temp sensor into an oil temp sensor. Once it reaches oil temp it is good to go.
dude!! This is brilliant! this is so simple it makes me mad lol thats just a plate over the bottom of the cis box... so smart!
You have to modify the CIS octopus arms, but yes, it is pretty straightforward... I don't have it all perfected just yet, but getting there.
@@r.arabian3056 have you driven it down the road yet? I did a sniper on a range rover and it worked great but it was a much more normal application. I've got a cis 911 and would love to ditch it for efi. I've heard atomization could be a problem with a center mounted carb which may make slow speeds difficult/rough
@@BUILTOFFICIAL yes. It works. Look up Mike Kiamy on you tube. he built one with Solex cams... a complete screamer. Sold on BAT more than 100K last year. The throttle response is amazing. No atomization issues I can tell. That is all old VW based info... it works.
@@r.arabian3056 awesome! thanks for the quick responses I may give this a shot on mine
so the 2 barrel is enough? What size motor is it?
2.7. Good up to 375 hp. A 4 barrel would be way overkill.
I’d like to also fit this to my 2.7, can you tell me what kit you used and did you bolt it straight in place of the original cis throttle body? Kev
I used Dove dish soap and some water before and noted other TH-cam rubber seal installers suggested dish soap as well. I have a six inch chop top 69 Mustang Fastback restomod I will be trying to install smoked rear glass tomorrow. Since 1979 when it was chopped I used tinted Lexan with opening and removable from side to side split window but this time it's going back to glass. Even WD 40 is recommended by the WD 40 corporation which I do have on hand, I look forward to it, 'never do today what one may possibly do better tomorrow' I always say.
Gotta do my 914 like this. How much was the build?
You don't want to know.... but in 2006 dollars when pro shops (renegade and others) did it, I have a book with 60K in receipts, not including the car. There is alot to the car not shown in the video.... it is pretty custom.
And the gearbox??
901 with upgraded cv and axles. Have a 5 speed Suby for “one day”…
You have the sweetest 914 next to a 914-6. Nice video...
I have a converted 6 too. This car eats it for lunch and is more fun to drive. The 6 is just nostalgic Porsche. Thank you for the compliment.
helpful.

That area looks like thousand oaks. Ever drive hwy 33 before the closure?
Yes, all the time. Down through Ojai. Pretty drive now, too bad it's closed.
Hell yeah!
Just another perfect day for a drive. The wheels @ 2:15 on the trio of ice green 914’s - talk about wheels being “made” for a car - great look.

Cool choice of music! I never knew that "Holiday" existed in piano form.
and that ladies and gentlemen is how you totally devalue a collectable that is now selling for 25K
Haha yeah! ... they were so damn cheap in the early 90s. People thought since they had slow 4 cylinder VW engines, they would never be collectors! ...
Must be a fun car to drive. I have Porsche 928 and I wish I can get some conversion done
The vacuum can on your distributor is 90deg different from mine. But the No1 spark plug line looks in the same position. So I am curious, what distributor part number do you have?
I'd have to pull it to get to it.... I don't think I can get a photo of it. But it is the original, stock 1971 fuel injection distributor. Make sure where your vacuum can is, you can twist the distributor. If you are not in the same spot, ie toward the opposite side, it is 180 degrees off... you can't twist enough for timing possibly. All depends on the timing of the motor though so don't just pull it. The position it is in allows for a wide range of timing adjustment turn (not that you need huge swings). I'll take a look later today and see if I can get the dizzy number.
Ha, I was being stupid. You just have your No1 plug going to a different cap position, duh :) But I am curious what distributor model you have because it seems you have the dual vacuum and few people seem to like that. I have dual weber carb IDFs so a different setup, but am also running a dual vacuum distributor JFUDX4 (or a model 205) with electronic module inside.
Looks familiar. Is this off Kanan rd. Heading back to the 101 fwy?
Yup..
It looks like you're using first gear in the 914 trans. Are you finding that it's holding up well with the torque of that engine? Thanks!
Hi Joe. Absolutely. My tuner is "Yimisport" in Santa Clarita, CA. When we discussed numbers, he could have bumped this to in the 350 HP range, but we felt that would be alot, and we would have trouble with the torque number. Torque is what will kill it. So we tuned it at 300 HP on the nose, and 250 Torque. IT is also set up so that the power doesn't hit like a 2 stroke, but increases as the car is already rolling so it transfers power smoothly but very raw. In this video, it was still only at 225 hp using a stock air to air subaru intercooler. I upgraded it to air to water and thats how we made power. STI turbo and STI injectors with Cobb software. It runs REAL fast now....
When you break in a new engine, first start, you have to break in the cam and seat the rings.... not a kit...a fully rebuilt engine, first start..
All well sorted 914-6 runs and handles so nicely!!
I thought those subaru engines had more power
300 isnt enough for you? car only weighs 2100 pounds.
@@r.arabian3056 oh of course, I wish I had 100hp 😂😂. It's just that people that own subarus brag about their cars having 500 hp, so I had the wrong idea
@@ozkrpalminteri9431 So yes they CAN. My tuner said stock, he can push it above 350 HP. But on this car, the 901 transmission will blow up real quick with that HP number and the associated torque. This car is 300 hp with 249 torque, which wont kill it. I would have to upgrade to a subaru trans to go above what it has. A 500 HP car would need all forged internals for sure. That being said, power to weight on this car, it keeps up with modern 911's easily. It is only money....
A fun28 cobra jet.
Sounds Very Sweet!
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning vehicles any more....:-((
Well we get to enjoy them till they ban them, but I think gasoline isnt going anywhere really. All this electrical horseshit isnt going to take over until they perfect it, and that battery tech is years away. Drive em like you stole em!
Then we convert to whatever is legal
What did you use for motor mounts and how did the back deck clear engine?
This one has what I believe is a "Mad Dog" motorsports type mount... it swivels so you can do certain maintenance without a full engine drop... like a clutch change. Not the "factory 6 mount"... Clears easy, just one area on the CIS fuel distributor had to be notched like 2 inch by 1 inch to allow for it to fit without any hitting. But under the deckled, not a problem. Top fits in trunk, no cutting required.
Lost me at the mask. Sorry......
Sorry you feel that way Hans. One of us works in a high risk environment and may have been exposed at the time this video was made. We were just being cautious as other family members are high risk as well. Politics aside, its about cars buddy.
Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!! (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!!!!
Well we will just have to convert to Electra glide.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I used to have the WRX engine, and now have the LS3 with a hot cam. I'm almost thinking of going back to the subie engine. What is the biggest subie engine that can be put in there with a turbo?
Subaru full 6 cylinder motors fit just like a 911 porsche did.. most any 4 cyl EJ or later motor will fit too. Build away!
A six cylinder Subaru is fun- but none of them have the aftermarket support that the EJ series does. An EJ205( 2.0wrx) stroked with a 2.5(STI)crank makes a really lovely, torquey bottom end for the street. An EJ257(2.5 STI) destroked with the 2.0 crank is the move for high HP, high RPM applications.
5:11 - guess the engine game starts :)
Ha, you noticed eh? if you listen.. 1.7, 1.8., 2.0, 2.7, 3.2, V8, and a partridge in a pear tree...
Thanks
Keeping the 901 trans really changes the usual response from the WRX engine and Subie trans. Gives it long legs and real chance for the turbo to unwind. Great chassis changes really make this a fun car for the driver and the passenger! Ask me how I know...
Cept the 901 really isnt built for that power.
I wonder how reliable this would be. No air coming in and out and the gearbox is not meant to cope with so much torque
good job guys. always start with bottom pinch weld. set the bottom rubber lip over punch weld and begin pulling it over with a hook tool then begin working it in. Also wd-40 works great . just spray in the rubber channel
Great change of motor by the way
Nice colors combined!
