Suminagashi Marbling with Encaustic Monotype on Encaustiflex
มุมมอง 3.5K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Suminagashi (Floating Ink) Marbling is a very simple, fun way to create a patterned background for more complex artwork. Encaustiflex, a super absorbent microfiber paper, is ideal for this technique. It does not tear even when saturated with water, it is flexible so it is easy to print on the water's surface and it accepts most other media so you ca keep adding layers to your artwork, even sewing.

Artists love tools and I love stencils. They can add subtle visual complexity and create compositional unity in a series. It's not about the stencil, it's how you use the stencil.

Do you finish it with any varnish or is it complete and hold up with just wax? I see the earlier question able it being non- uv resistant.
No varnish necessary. If you use R&F encaustic medium, it has Damar resin in it which adds more hardness over time. Plain pure beeswax is fine though. ☺️
Wow
What type of varnish do you use? It's a question, thank you for your video and your answer. 😇🥰
No varnish. Just shiny paint. Encaustic does not need varnish. You can buff it to a shine with a soft cloth after it hardens. 😊
@@lesliegiuliani6160 🥰😇Thank you for sharing!
Thank you!
Nice video but the music was annoying!
When is the year is your class going to start? I know the beginning PWF is end of April. I'm looking forward to watching your class .
I believe my class is the first one up!!!
How do you display your encaustiflex art?
Mounting Encaustiflex You can mount in any frame. I get simple ones from Michaels. But encaustic does not NEED glass. If you want to mount to a panel, you need to prepare the back for gluing the encaustic on the back resists the glue, so you need to paint 2 thin layers of R&F encaustic gesso on the back, drying between coats. Now it will glue. Coat the panel to be glued with Encaustic Gesso, as well. I use YES glue because it is a paste and easy to control. Apply a thin layer on the panel and the back of the piece. Lay piece on the panel, cover with parchment (to protect the paint) and squeegee from the center our to get air bubbles out and create a tight bond. With the parchment in place, weight the piece overnight. Trim when dry. If you are not building up texture, you can work on Encaustiflex and only mount the successful pieces, which can save money. Of course, you can build up texture after the piece is mounted to the rigid substrate. You can also hang larger pieces with magnets. (Smaller pieces hung with magnets can look lost on the wall because they lack the depth dimension of a cradled panel.)
How do you exhibit/display encautiflex? Handle just like paper? Use with or without a mat? Glue to a cradled birch?

Just Wonderful, definitely on the list of projects
Very cool & clever technique! Lovely results.
Thank you, Angel. You are an Angel 🙂
excellent demo. thank you!
Thank you, Selena 🙂
£90 for 6 pigment sticks, they wouldn't be my first choice for printmaking experimentation!
If Pigment Sticks are already in your “toolbox”, it is great to know they have the versatility. They come in over 100 colors so the nuance of color choice is another bonus. Colors are priced by the pigment so you may have latitude there, as well. Art materials can be pricey. I love it when my stash can multitask. Thank you for your comment. 😊
Beautiful work. Thanks for the tutorial
Than you!!!!
Perfect! You can do a lot in a 5x7 inch painting! Also available in 1.5” depth and a range of colors. 😊
Where can we learn more about the paper lithography method? Thanks for giving us so many ideas to try in this short video.
I teach the technique at my studio, at R&F, and at the International Encaustic Conference. I have a promo in my website shop for a comprehensive Encaustic Printmaking Video package, including the 30 minute video, 5 dura-lar stencils and a 30 sheet pack of Encaustiflex. The video shows the technique in detail, plus lots of others. Great to have in your “toolbox”.🤗
Thanks for this, Leslie. It gave me fond memories of my class with you a year ago. Makes me want to get out my hot palette. I wonder where people will get them now that R&F is going to stop producing them?
Griddles, I guess. Always use your own thermometer, though. 😊
So happy I came upon this video. How inspiring! I will have to try my hand at it.
Please do!
I need some of that flex paper!

This music is awesome!
Leslie, I enjoyed the video. Question: Does encaustic wax keep vintage papers and inkjet color prints from fading? Thanks!
Sorry to report that Encaustic is not a UV filter. That said, it is always good to do your own testing with less precious materials in a sunny window.
Brilliant music too! Thank you...
Wow i didnt know this is possible😍
Hope you will try. Such a beautiful effect. ☺️
My son bought me a starter kit three years ago, and I have not used it. I am now going to try it out. I think this may be fun.
That is great!!! Be sure you keep your wax temperature @200 degrees to be safe. Take a class from an experienced teacher, if you can. 👍👍👍
Brilliant! thank you.
You are very welcome 🙏
Thank you Leslie
You are VERY welcome :-)
Hi Leslie, Im using my husbands account. I love your hair. Im in the process of growing out my grey. The effect from the silver with the blue ochre is stunning.
Ha!!! Grey hair and a Silver video :-) Thank you SO much!!!

thank you , really like your art
Thank you SO much Todd 😊
Great video. Everything you need to know!!👍👍⭐️🤦🏻♀️

What is encaustiflex?
Encaustiflex is a super-absorbent microfiber"paper". It does not rip or stretch. Great for lots of types of painting and printmaking. I love it for Encaustic. For more info and purchase: www.encaustiflex.com
I love my papers that came a few days ago. Thanks for all the helpful videos!
Great video of Cousin Howard. The cabinetry brings back wonderful memories. There was this silly boy, who loved music (and still does), who would stand and try to make some tolerable notes come forth. Cousin<in-Law> put up with this, somehow. This would occur at joint birthday parties -especial when his home and his wife`s sister`s home shared a backyard. - Dad-{Z"L}`s nieces. Missing Aunt Molly F-T
Stunning!! So beautiful and what a great homage to the beauty of the Byzantine era. Thank you!
Thanks SO much!!! I studied Byzantine Icon Painting and I am a traditional gilder. That was definitely my inspiration.
Great video Leslie! Wonderful.
Thank you, Christine. Hope to see you soon!!!!
Dang he's good.
He surely was 💖
@@LeslieGiuliani I'm sorry for your loss. He died about a month before my father, who was a classically-trained Jazz pianist and my biggest musical influence. I wish you the best of holidays and to remain safe as we await the vaccine.
@@Rhythmicons I pray that thee soon receive the vaccine. My wife & I, in B'er Shev'a, have had our paired sets. Too many musicians weren't vaccinated in time. - I would charge a certain person with malfeasance, misfeasance, nonfeasance that has cost USA so very many lives and sicknesses.
Very unique! Great idea and beautiful effect :). Did you keep your palette at your normal working temp or a wee bit cooler?
The usual 200 degrees for this demo. ☺️
What size is that glorious hot plate? I enjoy your demos...thx
Thank you, Edith 💓 It is a homemade 36”x36” piece of aluminum that I had Anodized. (What a pain!!!) I lay it over 4 hot plates. For most of my work I use my R&F 16”x16” Heated Palette with its, most useful, brush rest.
Thx, I use the smaller one as well and enjoy it. Look forward to meeting u one day up at R &F.(the fun place❣️)
@@edyerae1000 That would be great!!! Hopefully we will be back teaching at R&F in 2021
encaustiflex is endlessly versatile!. Jac
Thank you, Jac. Agreed 🤗
Fun and such simple supplies. Makes me want to start right now!
Oh, Penny, give it a go. ☺️
@@LeslieGiuliani I made some marbled paper this morning using sketchbook and watercolor paper using golden liquid acrylic. I can see where the microfiber paper would be stronger and there would be less problems with folding and tearing while being removed from the water surface,
@@PennyGunderson Encaustiflex works like a charm. No issues. All weights work and you can layer the Suminagashi over and over. No rips.
That was so much fun to watch! Thinking of so many paths this process can take! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Suzanne. Miss you. Go for it. Happy to help, if you need. 🤗
oh boy! cannot wait to try playing with this. I took a paper marbling class once and this just plays right into it! thanks Leslie
You go, Su. ☺️
Is it possible to use encaustic over high flow acrylic? LOVE the video - thx!
The acrylic is so thin and Encaustiflex is so absorbent, you should not have an issue.
Very cool!
Thanks, Michele. 💖
Wowzer!! Great video, Leslie!
Thanks so much Lorrie 🤗
