The torque and HP figures are in a different rpm range than a 790 so you will have to re-flash or recalibrate the quick shifter to run with the different power band pattern curve or get a 890 ECU module, and I would definitely change out the oil and oil filters and oil screens asap. Awesome videos on this project and I love following this 790 to 890 engine swap.
Thanks for the advice, glad you’re liking it.
These are films to watch in the future to come. Well done sir!
Thanks, appreciate the feedback.
Really good, well made film. But, if you ask me, leave the "music" out. You don't need it. Well, I do not need it! It's only noise. Thank you! Oh, and the manual can be bought through KTM both online and as a book. Highly recommended.
Noted!
Really interesting films. Highly appreciated!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing cool project!
Glad you think so!
well done m8 should be well happy
Thanks Henry, Yes well happy that it's back up and running...she's a keeper now 🤞
Hi, you probably have one, but if not I have full printed workshop manual for 890 Adv you could have.
Thanks, I have the 790 Adv and the 890 Duke R which covers all I need, I think 🤔
did you say earlier you were running a smaller front sprocket would that be a factor towards swing arm chain clearance/damage. thanks for the vid maybe a tad to repetitive but a great resource for those future swappers.
Yes I was running a 15T on the front. The paint on the swingarm was worn there even with the 16T, living in a wet climate doesn't help with the amount of mud and dirt here, that gets stuck under the guide.
well done good luck with your project thanks for documenting
Thanks for watching!
Great job getting it all finished off and started 👍🏻. That coolant leak has been annoying me I’ve tightened everything and still couldn’t figure it out thank you for the update on that. Now I know what I need to do to stop that 👍🏻. Do you have the updated part numbers for the thermostat and the housing part still ?
Hi Sean, 16mm Bolts x 3 #0025050166S, Thermostat #63535017000 and Connection #63535019200.
@@Project_789Tthanks mate much appreciated 👍🏻
Can't wait to see the results from the mapping just to see if ktm has a different map between the 2 or the ecu is clever enough that it can run both. Thanks for trying all this out for us with yet to be problems, I've got a non adventure 790 2018 I'm guessing it's pretty much the same deal
Thanks for the comment. I managed to get a 150 mile ride yesterday, and to be honest the standard fuelling/map of the 790 seems fine. No snatchy throttle in town traffic and all smooth throughout the rev range. KTM Sean has said the same about his Duke. I’m just curious about the standard 790 mapping and whether or not a custom one is required? But right now it seems to work absolutely fine.
@Project_789T perfect! Yeah It sounded pretty good in the video tbf. I'm guessing the A.F.R will be pretty close, Maybe even slightly rich which would help our bikes anyway.
It certainly felt like its fuelling is ok but I do want peace of mind. It will be on my list to check but maybe in the new year.
I feel a deep empathy for people that had a bike that that suffered these issues in earlier model years. I hope you'll get the issue sorted or compensated for, as KTM seems to finally be doing. I've put 15,000 miles (25,000 km) on my 23' 890R in the last year with no issues. My trip last summer alone was 10,000 miles, camping off the bike for 4 months. I've ridden over many mountain ranges and deserts with her in the US and the bike has been amazing! Death Valley, jeep roads over the Rockies in Colorado, Baja Mexico and everything in between. I can't imagine having a bike as capable as this for the terrain that i've put it through. This is my first KTM. I had japanese bikes for the last 42 years. I know that there have been issues that KTM is finally addressing after much frustration. I just felt the need to add my voice that my bike has been mind blowingly amazing and that they are not all swiss cheese cams waiting to strand you somewhere, There have been a lot of loud voices, and maybe for good reason, considering their dissatisfaction from KTM's response to the very real issues with earlier models. But I hope that they will get past this issue as the bike is so uniquely capable of being such a great all round world traveler. As a side note: I brought my bike to Solid Performance in PA which does the suspension work on Chris Birch's bike. They did a valve adjustment and inspection on my bike at 13,000 miles, partly because I became concerned about camshaft wear read about on the forums. I was told the top end was in perfect condition and the valves were all nearly in spec. Bonus, thye serviced my Wp suspension and dialed it in for my riding style and weight. I ride this bike hard and often get her wet over my boots doing water crossings. I treat her good and do good maintenance to keep her happy. This is the best off road/tour the country/take a trip down to mexico on dirt roads/do it all motorcycle I've ever owned. Whatever you ride, get out and do it more often. It's easy to couch surf. Turn off the tube and get out there. Life is for the living...
Wow! Great words thanks for watching!
First episode I've watched, I'll subscribe and watch the rest as its a great watch. Shame you have ordered the headers, I bought both my 890R's with full Akra systems so have two brand new exhausts in the garage
Welcome to the Project, and you start with that bombshell!! 🤣 There’s a great story around the headers…I’ll divulge it all in the next video.
Often wondered what it would take to upgrade my 790 duke to an 890. So are you still using the 790 ecu and map on the 890 motor?
Yes 890 motor with all the original 790 ECU/Loom. I’m going to get the fuelling checked on a dyno, just to make sure that she’s getting the right amount of fuel using the standard 790 ECU. If not I’ll have it remapped accordingly. I feel this is the best way, as otherwise you may be into a lot of coding for keys/ecu etc. unless you had a complete 890 Adv donor bike and it’s parts available.
@Project_789T I guess the bike will just feel like it's had a rebore and uprated cams! A tune on the pcv should get you in the right ballpark. I think I've been over complicating things in my head thanks!
My 2023 790 Duke has the radii and an additional truss in that area.
After 2021 when the 890 came out the new 790 in 23 also had a similar casting. It must reduce the flex around the gear selector shaft for better shifting.
Go with a Dimsport Rapid Bike EVO module and you won't lose cruise control
Still have cruise with the PCV ✊🏻✊🏻
I don’t understand Why people try to remove right bolt of the swingarm, there s left bolt and it is very easy and not dangerous
Sometimes from the factory I think they tighten it more than 10nm which makes it difficult to get the lower shock mount free.
@ ok , but it’s not necessary to unscrew it. I removed anytime the rear shock and i unscrewed only the left bolt. Sorry for mi english
@@Adventures_onTrails No problem, sometimes the shock comes out ok, but sometimes it's tight from factory. That's why some need to remove the bush. I removed the bush completely to apply anti seizure grease.
Just went and checked my 2021 890 Duke R....yes that is the correct orientation for the header nuts. The 790 and 890 have different radiators. The 890 radiator is larger. Enjoying following this, Thank You for sharing! You are doing an incredible job of cleaning as you go along. It will be like you have a new bike! Also, as a Texan who has some Scottish ancestry and a Scottish name (Gillie)...I'm enjoying the accent!
Thanks for checking the headers, I wasn’t aware of the larger radiator on the 890 Duke R, I don’t think the Adv’s have larger ones as far as I’m aware but I’ll double check. As for the accent, born in Belfast but circa 35 years of living in England, Scotland, Wales and back to Scotland has taken its toll 😉
I love this project! Did you have to change the complete wiring harness? I was thinking to a swap like that but the idea of changing engine/wiring harness + the ECU and key fob for the immobilizer issue was a bit too much.
No, the wiring harness, ECU and key fob/immobiliser are all original 790. The engine alone has only sensors on it and they are not coded to the ecu.
@@Project_789T got it. So I assume you removed the knock sensor from the 890 engine.
Yes, as the 790 loom has no connection for it. On the Rottweiler Performance Site, Power Commander Description it states this... "It should also be known that the 790/890 Adventure models do have knock sensors in the coils, which in the case of accidental lower octane fuel the bike will handily adjust and protect itself." However that's the only place I've seen that stated.
Wow wat a project ! I would just buy a 890 adventure (ok there is no R) . Respect ! I own a 2015 1290 R Superduke , a 2023 Duke 890R and a 2022 Duke 390 for my wife .
I hear you, but I'd still be left with a broken 790 Adv...better to keep the old girl running with a freshie!
01:25 "It's had more oil go through it than P Diddy's hands on a Friday night" LOLLLLLL
😜
Good job! Keep us updated💪
Thanks, still working away at it. 🏍👍
I’ll be back home tomorrow from work and I can check the knock sensor but I’m pretty sure from memory my 890r engine didn’t have that fitted. My 890r engine was a 2021 model. Good job on not trying to switch the map sensor either, I tried that and and they can’t be swapped over the underneath where it connects to the throttle body is also different 👍🏻
Thanks Sean, I see the different sized centre block now on the TB's 👍
Since both the Adventure and the Duke R have the same engine same Cams and throttle body...I wonder what was done to give the Duke R 15 more hp while still matching the torque of the Adventure?
I expect it's all done with fuel delivery, intake size and mapping, torque is higher on the adv, so that's the trade off with less bhp.
All things the same, if you enable an engine to rev higher (via better valve control, fuel/air flow, etc) you can get higher hp for the same amount of 'peak' torque.
Done over 500 miles on mine now and still going great 👍🏻 thanks for the mention 🙂 look forward to seeing how yours goes. I’m getting mine remapped next month to see what difference that makes as I still have the 790 ECU fitted
Hi I’m following as going through the cam shaft problem and have considered Buying another engine and making it more bomb proof with mods as I like the bike. How much did you pay for the duke unit. Thanks
Hi Thomas, I managed to get it for £1350.
