When made this shirt I believe I was still using monofilament (plastic like transparent line) I have since switched to braided fishing line though and it is leaps and bounds better than the monofilament. Absolute night and day difference! Not sure how different brands compare but I just look for 50lbs test braided fishing line at the local sporting goods store. @@cachecow thank you so much! The dye was thickened for this one. I wouldn’t say I made the chem water super thick but for whatever reason when I make thick chem water, certain colors like violet thicken up more than the rest and other colors like yellow end up thinner than the rest…. But anyway, yes this shit and the last few are from a large batch I did quite a while ago that was a bulk scrunch ice dye. For the most part the whole batch just came out as boring blends of mostly blue green with bits of purple and orange. They weren’t terrible or anything I just wasn’t excited by them so I put them aside to be re tied and re dyed one day… I made a few sea turtle shirts with them a while ago but now I’m pretty much entirely out of blanks and unfortunately sales have been really slow the past couple of months so this is all I really have to work with at the moment. I’ve got a dyer friend that’s planning to send me a couple blanks along with one I’ll be dying and sending back to him. That should be in the near future and another one that’s going to be sending me an already folded one to dye up for a collaboration in the near future as well but aside from that and a couple more of these already dyed blanks… sadly, I might have to take a break from tie dye for a bit. They were selling really well in the spring and early summer but since around the middle to end of the summer this year it’s just slowed to the point of being unsustainable. I’ll definitely resupply when I’m able. I absolutely love this art form! But I’m probably going to be mixing up the types of art I’m doing a little and definitely slowing down the rate of production a bit while I look for other work to pay the bills at least until things pick up again.

@@lesstiglet1241 this is an original design. The previous one was a pleat pattern that I reverse engineered from a picture I had seen of a fully folded piece of fabric. I had never seen it tie dyed before though so I figured out the crease pattern and gave it a try and loved the result. I was then thinking about that pattern and how it was sort of a zigzag squared and started wondering if I could make a zigzag cubed pattern and came up with this. If you look on my channel my last video before this one goes over it in more detail.

@dontmisschris7248 This is extremely cool. I love how you work it out with origami first. I guess you're able to work the entire design out in your head before you lay it out. It's genius, really. I'll be following you a bit more.

I’d say depending on how complicated it is somewhere between half to most is worked out through visualizing it in my head piece by piece and then drawing it on paper until I have all or most of the pattern and then the rest is folding to check that it all works and sometimes making minor adjustments to the pattern or working out the minor unknowns through folding.

@@sk8_or_tie-dye908 thank you so much! That’s exactly what it is. I’ve been exploring every kind of art I can get my hands on my whole life. Around a decade ago now, I took a deep dive into origami and paper crafting for a few years. This is basically me applying my origami tessellation know-how to the world of tie dye. Which, don’t get me wrong has definitely been done to some extent before (like in Shibori) but I’m trying to find some new things to do with it. Or at least things I haven’t seen done before.

@@cachecow thank you so much! It’s not far off but with the paper I’m not thinking about scale so much as fitting enough of the pattern on the paper to get the whole pattern worked out. For the pattern on that shirt, I found starting with an initial grid of 2x2 inch squares to draw the pattern over was the easiest to pull off, 1.5 was pretty doable and I was able to pull off 1.25 but it got pretty difficult to do the honeycomb tie at that scale.

@@cachecow I agree! That’s why I’m still leaning toward a decorative patch even though I can barely find the hole. I was thinking something like a smiley face, hippie flower, peace sign… or maybe a Grateful Dead skull. Gotta see what I can find for patches I guess.

@@paulafloyd-cx7mo thank you so much! I’ve seen a couple of straps discolor like that. Kind of a gold color when I saw it… I haven’t tried any of the synthetic dyes myself. I’ll be interested to see how that works. And I can certainly relate with the pots! Oh the many things I’ve sacrificed over the years to the dye/art lab! 😂

If it weren’t for the fact that I have to wash and dry the tie dyes so often I’m not sure I’d remember to take them out of the dryer or even switch them from the washer to the dryer half the time! Lol.

Basically what you’re looking at: I dyed the dry shirt (no presoak), put it in the container (the bottles are just to take up excess space), poured hot concentrated soda ash solution over it till it was fully submerged (1 cup SA/ 4 cups water heated to 140-150F), then left it for about 20-24 hrs. As the solution evaporated the soda ash crystallized on the shirt and the bottom of the container. I actually had another shirt in a container right next to it that sat even longer and everything else was exactly the same except that container had a cover over it so the water wasn’t able to evaporate out of the solution and no crystals formed at all on that one. Just something that happens when the SA is really concentrated and the water is about to evaporate. Sometimes it happens on fabric, sometimes on table tops etc. seems to have no effect on the outcome of the shirts either way from what I’ve seen.

I’d have to get back you on the exact colors… I believe I answered that question on one of my posts when I first made the shirt but don’t remember all of them off the top of my head. A lot of the colors are custom blends anyway though. I tend to work with 6-7 colors (basically primaries and secondaries sometimes with an extra purple or green shade…) and then mix around 12-14 colors from those. Usually I work with Grateful Dyes. My current selection is: lemon yellow, bright orange, fuchsia, true purple, true violet, turquoise (blue) & bright green and jet black. That’s pretty much my typical selection. Around the time I made this however, I was running low of some colors and out of others and had picked up a bunch of tiny sample jars of like 20 or so colors from Jacquard so a couple of my normal colors had been substituted…
