Winter in Tennessee

Winter in Tennessee 2024. This year we have had the coldest winter since we moved here 25 years ago. We also had 5 inches of snow at one time. Some of our backyard wildlife struggled to get to the food we provided.
Serene Snowy Backyard

Our first winter snowstorm of 2024. The snow is beautiful. The birds, squirrels, and rabbits in the backyard seem to enjoy the food we give them.
I'm Smarter than a Squirrel

Even though I put squirrel food on the ground, the squirrels still climb up to the bird feeders and eat the bird food. I think that I have outsmarted them. At least for now!
Middle Tennessee Backyard Birds

In the past week, I have seen several species of birds that I have never seen before. These include: Eurasian Collared-Doves, Eastern Towhee, Brown-Headed Cowbirds, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, and White-Throated Sparrow. I think the birds are spreading the word about our new bird feeders, and getting their friends to come visit us.

Making Mulch Pathways Late Summer Follow up

Birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, bees, ants, beetles all flock to the blossoms. It is a pollinators paradise.

Thanks so much Susan! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Many people here wish we didn’t have squirrels. They can be very destructive to gardens and even get into attics of homes. I have found that since I started feeding them, they tend to leave my garden plants alone - at least so far. I hope that keeps up.
@@ronintennessee4013 We have, to a lesser problem of small ring tailed possums getting in the roof and getting specialists in to get them out and relocate them.
I have 2 of these. One at home and one for our RV. Knee saver plus.

Very nice, Mr. Ron! I loved watching the doves. I've had them in my yard a few times, but we don't see them often. The other day we got some footage of a bird that I thought was a cow bird, but after more attention, I believe it was a Rusty Blackbird - blind in one eye. Happy birthday to your wife!
Thanks so much outdoorztime! I love watching the birds too. The doves are beautiful with their large wingspan. When they get ready to land, sometimes they slowly descend and almost hover above the ground. So awesome. Thanks again!

That might be true. I don't even want to go up against a smart mouse!
I'm told that squirrels don't particularly like capsaicin either. Apparently if you dust your seed with chili powder they will not be interested in the seed. Birds however, are unable to taste this spice so it doesn't bother them.
Thank you Mrs.Silversmith! I use cayenne and chili powder on my vegetable garden to ward off squirrels, but I never thought of using it on bird seed. Great idea!

I did so far, but those little creatures are very crafty. I wouldn’t be surprised if they find a way around the barrier.

Thank you, @tjzspirit8134! I'm glad you liked it! I didn't know most of the birds. So after I got pictures of them, I used a free phone app called Seek. It helps identify plants and animals.
So cute! We have cottontails in our yard too! I hand feed some of them. They are fun to watch and record. I love when they lounge like that stretched out. 😊🐰
