I think the biggest challenge for me in this chapter is that I don't enjoy biology, so for me, I don't enjoy reading about the biological process, and if that is also not your thing, don't worry about these very specific biological details. They won't be on any exams. Look for the bigger ideas in the chapter, which I will try to list below. I think you will find that you already understand the concept of the chapter better than you think - you might be too difficult on yourself in this chapter. The big ideas of the chapter are very common sense, but the technical biological explanations might be causing some difficulty in processing what she is saying - this makes it more difficult to see the bigger picture in this chapter. Unless you are a biology nerd, you have to filter out a lot of the technical jargon to understand her purpose, which I am guessing might be the part that is frustrating for you. Hopefully my explanation below will help. If not, feel free to ask more questions. I would view this chapter with 3 main take-aways: 1. Montessori was born in the 1800s, so science and technology were still processing and catching up with scientific hypothesis of prenatal development - there was very limited microscopic evidence. When Montessori was writing about biology and development, the scientific community was at a turning point with new microscopes and new ways of studying the inside of the body and how it works. Until that time, much of what was known was largely a hypothesis of how microscopic development in the body works. They were only just beginning to have the technology to see the microscopic part of the biological system of development. So for someone like Montessori, all the new information coming out about how the body develops was fascinating to her and impacted her in a way that maybe it doesn't impact us today. She needed to write about the new discoveries in the development of children before birth. For me, this is not a fun subject, but for someone like Montessori, it was one of her first loves and passions. For me, I won't lie...this is my least favorite chapter in the book. 2. The body starts out developing from the same cells and begins to divide and specialize in their functions. During the prenatal stages, the organs begin to develop, but until you are born and begin to use each part of the body for their particular function, the process of development has not yet fulfilled its purpose, and so there is some dormancy involved in development until after birth. So there are two parts to development: the creation of the body in the prenatal development and then the development of the functionality of each part of the body (which can only happen after the child starts using each part of the body for the intended purpose - post birth). 3. Most importantly, the body is an incredible miracle that develops from general cells into systems of specialized functions. While cells in the body of a human are not much different from some animals in the first days of development, the process is miraculous in that it develops very quickly into specific organs with specific and unique functions - and it differentiates between species very quickly. Each part of the body is specialized, yet interconnected, and once it has developed from these general cells into a specialized function, it can no longer change into anything else. It must continue developing according to its purpose/specialized function.

@Base10Montessori A big thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment and that too in such detail. I would like you to know where I am coming from so you could guide me better. I am a parent and have a 3.5 year old son. I started reading this book in the hope of improving myself as a parent and applying some techniques which may be useful for my son's development. When I stumbled upon this chapter, it sure had a lot of biological jargon which, like you, I too am not a fan of😅. I understand the writers fascination with biology at her time as it should have been a big deal for everyone and for someone who is so passionate about educating children, it definitely must have been big. I understand that this particular chapter may not have pointers towards what we can do to educate better, so I think I will just have to go with the flow as of now. Do let me know if I am missing something? On a side note, my child has started stammering all of a sudden since a couple of months ago. Sometimes it's better and sometimes it's worse. If you have anything to help with a child's stammer, I would be really very greatful! Once again, I truly never found any youtuber replying so quickly with such detailed explanation. Thank you and hoping the best for you and your channel!

You are welcome. My best advice is to push through this chapter and keep going. My first time through this book, I got to this chapter and didn't pick it up again for several years. I only forced myself through this chapter when I finally decided to go to training, so it took that motivation to keep going. If a chapter doesn't click with you, push through it to the next until you find something that resonates. There is a lot of good stuff in later chapters, but to be honest, not everything is going to resonate and there are some things I flat out disagree with. So it's ok to approach this book with your own opinions and preferences (and strengths). As for the stammering, the advice I get from speech pathologists the most is to not bring attention to the stammering. Make sure to wait and listen to everything your child is saying and not interrupt them or speak for them. This is usually a phase that works itself out in a few months. If you continue to worry, definitely bring it up to your pediatrician and perhaps they can make a referral with a speech pathologist. Most of the time, it will work itself out within 3-6 months with a lot of patience and extra time for allowing them to talk through the stammers. Make sure to speak a little slower during conversations as well. Sorry for the delay in my response. The holidays get crazy! I hope this helps.

I'm so glad these videos are helpful! I love sharing what I know. Sometimes we can be very protective of what we learned in training - and I understand why. Training is such an intense experience that it is a very special thing, but at the same time, safe-guarding all our knowledge has kept us the best kept secret in education here in the United States. I often feel that we are too stingy sharing what we know, or assuming that people won't understand us so we don't bother trying to explain what we do, is not the right attitude - but it is a common one. We need to show people there is a better way to teach and demonstrate the heights and depths of what children can do even before the age of 6. It's incredible that we can teach 6 year olds division into the millions, introduce squaring and cubing, give them a foundational knowledge and vocabulary for basic geometry, and provide them with functional knowledge and experience with reading, grammar, and sentence analysis - and we can do this all before elementary. Not to mention learning cursive at 3 years old. And the great thing is that it isn't even difficult. It's a joy for both the guide and the child! When we provide this type of education during the 3-6 years, children just absorb it. After 6 years old, they have to work much harder to learn it.

Yes, the colored beads are usually in the red boxes. I bought my materials used so I don't have a perfect setup. If you're doing addition, ideally, red is the color. I grabbed the boxes I have available at my house to make the video, but yes, use red if you have it.
