928 Voltage Regulator Replacement (Horrible Ending!!)
We were getting low voltage when the car was at a warm idle. I figured we should replace the voltage regulator to address the issue. I'm glad we decided to do it because the regulator had issues, and the back of the alternator was packed full of leaves.
Don't know if it actually addressed the problem because I never got to drive the car again. Mother nature can be cruel!!!! Come back for the next video to see the aftermath.

Dealer Wanted $400 For This? Seriously?
มุมมอง 5892 หลายเดือนก่อน
My 2020 F150 daily has reached 55K and I figured it was time to change the rear differential fluid. Didn't even need a jack. Just a 3/8's rachet and 1/2 inch socket. Thought I was going to have to deal with RTV, but it actually had a gasket. I put in a new Lube Locker gasket ( www.lubelocker.com ) and Lucus gear oil. Should be good until 100K. When I was at the dealership to get my transmission...

What BMW Motor Did We Buy? Why?

We decided we needed another BMW M20B25 motor, since we have a 1987 325is. There is a reason for why we purchased this motor, but we are going to reveal that later. We picked up this motor, automatic transmission, wiring harness, and a few of the accessories for $500. We th...

I have a 66 F250 w/ 352 and this was very helpful, thank guys, appreciate you capturing this process!
So, got passenger rear installed…not fun. Please tell me the driver’s rear is easier lol. That dam sway bar gets in the way! And the washers…uggh 1 more to go😢
Sorry but they are the same. Just have to fiddle with it and resist the urge to beat on it too hard. You need the threads when you finally get it through there. Persistance.
@ “Persistence” is the perfect word for sure!
I just watched this video. My 1986 Porsche 928s manual transmission with 200k miles has never had this checked. The original clutch was replaced at 160k miles by a local mechanic. My timing belt + water pump + rollers were replaced 22 years ago. 😅. I use 20w -50 non synthetic oil .
I’ll be attempting replacing my rears with the same Koni’s this weekend. Are your’s set to the softest setting? I don’t like my ride harsh at all. This was an excellent video to guide me, TY!
Honestly, I just took them out of the box and installed them. I figured I could adjust them later If I didn't like the setting. I drove it around a little and liked the ride how it was. Didn't really get a chance to play with adjustments to dial it in before it didn't matter anymore. Hurricane!
so much false info in this thread. 928's are not prone to head gasket failures due to bad design. Any open deck engine with a head gasket will have the gasket materials deteriorate after 40 years. The gaskets are just not designed to last that long. Not to mention over that period of time imagine all the different coolant types that have been used. Some of which were not even around when the head gaskets were designed and made. The current recommendations regarding coolant for the 928 are G48. I've been working on 928's for almost 40 years.
Just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos. The way you take your time showing each step is terrific and you have a very calming demeanor as you explain what you are doing. Also love how you give tips to make things easier along the way. Great job all around!
Thank you!
Green fosfat free coolant is perfect for that.
Hopefully that is what it was. Kinda looked like the basic green stuff. It doesn't really matter any more though. Upcoming video will explain.
Did you flip the rubber bushing for the pedal shaft?
hey man curios of what you would check if you did have bouncing rpms at idle
The primary thing I would check would be the Idle Control Valve. I would clean it with carbonator cleaner first but may have to replace it.
This is great! Can you add the links of the harness' that you used? I'm about to do the same on my '66
Is that Color Pearl White? ID So I have its twin but in 5speed. Nice car! Good luck
No, it is "Bright Bronze Metallic" (paint code 966). In German it is called "hellbronze-metallic".
great video
Thank You.
Thanks for producing & sharing this vid' 🙂 Year F-100 ? And Transmission A' or M' ? The tran'pan does look diff., from my '82 F-100 3.8L V6 M3oT ! ;-)
It is a 1966 with a manual transmission. The transmission is a 3 speed top-loader. It use to be column shift but a previous owner converted it to a floor shift, which I wish they hadn't done.
@@C3KPaddock Thanks for your time .... Yep, M3oT can be fun', and is also a additional security level. LoL I also have a club' on the steering wheel, tah slow down' {visual & tangibily} anyone considering busting a window to access ignition & .... ;-)
Is it an open differential?
Based on what I have read, the electronic locking rear differential is open when the electronic lock is not engaged. That is why you don't need the friction additive in the fluid. I might have misspoke at one point in the video and said it was, whoops.
Thanks so much , did the exact same and great results. Did you add any oil to the system? Or just refrigerant ?
We didn't add any oil this time. We are going to add some oil and dye when we refill it again because the refrigerant leaked out again. These AC systems are a pain when you are chasing leaks!
@@C3KPaddock Thanks for the reply. No leaks yet for me, fingers crossed
Where did you get the dryer? Need the same one, can't find the 2 sensor one anywhere. Part # also please?
I got it from FCP EURO (www.fcpeuro.com). Part # MAH-AD240000S
Where did you get the dryer? I need the same one and can't find anywhere. Please let me know. Thanks Dave
Is not the cooling sistem , Is the Heather sistem
Beautiful truck. Good to see people restoring them. They are works of art. 2:59
Not sure if it is my computer setup but, your audio volume is low when you are talking and very loud when the music is playing. Anyways, my daughter and I have a 1991 325i that she is learning how to work on. Looking forward to more E30 content
Yeah, I switched computers and was having trouble figuring out how to change the volume on each track. I've gotta fix it in future videos. Working on a car with your kid is the best thing. Mine is starting to take over and wants to do everything himself. I guess I'm mostly a cameraman and an assistant now.
Can you do a video on replacing the 4 accessory belts?
Can you do a video on replacing the acessory belts?
Yeah, I never did replace those and I also need to pull the alternator off to replace the voltage regulator. This is also a smaller task I can do while I continue to procrastinate dropping the trans-axil to replace torque converter/pump seals.
That one you removed was actually aftermarket and still available. It has a white teflon or nylon ring instead of rubber. It also has brass posts and that brass connector that helps with horn reliability. Some guys were wondering if the nylon really holds up…apparently not!
Nope, it didn't hold up at all.
Needs some TLC then should be good. Is the FE a 352?
Yes it is a 352. It was purchased as a rebuilt crate motor about 15 years ago but has less than a 1,000 miles on it.
Nice video. How does the torque converter get refilled? Is it connected to the transmission? Thank you.....
Thank you. Yes, fluid is pumped back into it from the transmission when the car is running. That is why you have to fill the transmission, then run the car a few seconds, and then top off the fluid again. Repeat until the fluid level is good with the car running.
A bit of water on cold start is normal. It's created during combustion and vaporizes when the engine gets warm. It's a good reason to not take real short trips and shut your motor off cold. All that water sits in the exhaust. My muffler looked like a rust Slushy inside after the car being driven 2 miles to school for a couple years.
Awesome
I just refurbished my front calipers and painted them
I own three. Even the nicest cars that have not been maintained by a fastidious owner over the years will cost $10K in parts alone without any cosmetics. That said, they are fabulous cars and it's a "labor of love" for me.
Thank you for the detailed explanation! I got a 928 as well and I am trying to do the chocks myself.
I figured out after a while that nothing worked right on my 65 dashboard until I screwed it back into the dash, didn't know that is how it got its ground, drove me crazy there for a while 😂. Good luck on your build.
Definitely working better since I screwed it back into the dash, but still having issues with a brake light and blinker. I need to put some time into figuring out the problem, but really don't understand what could be wrong when you replace all the wires with OEM harnesses and have the same problem as before. I'm going to need some luck I'm sure.
Dont do that!
Why?
@@C3KPaddock that screw isn't for that. It only sets over center adjustment
4:39 the proper tool for this application is a Compression Fitting Spanner Wrench. It works beautifully on fuel line nuts. It allows you to grip on more of the nut surface.
Yet another tool I need to add to my Christmas list.
If you have an auto transmission or manual you should be using 20 50 viscosity oil for a 928
Yeah, I figured that out after we did the service on the car. I ordered what FCP Euro recommended before I knew to get 20W50. Owning this car is a learning experience. I will be sure to put that in it next service.
Might need valve adjustment. Lumpy idle is pretty common with e34 engines.
We did a valve adjustment at some point. I think it was after the injectors, but I would have to go back and look to be sure. We did find a few that were too tight and a few that were too loose. Sounded better to us once we were done.
You lock them from the inside by pushing the door handle the opposite way.
Interesting, I'm going to have to try that. The door handles on the inside are not the best and I plan to replace them soon.
@@C3KPaddock Did you try the door lock?
@@ronniejohnson317 I did and worked like you said. Learn new stuff all the time! Thank you.
I went to replace the thermostat, two of the screws broke. Just like yours, a simple job turned out to be a much bigger job than planned.
I guess you have to expect some broken bolts when you work on old vehicles, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating. Minutes turn into hours so quickly!
You too. I’ll send you a video on my maiden voyage.
Glad you finally got the new harness. What was the cost of the harness?
It was around $800. Maybe a little less.
That’s not bad for everything. My next issue is finding top dead center and learning how to set the timing. I am not a mechanic.
Me either. I just do research about whatever I need to do and give it a shot. Good luck!
"Promo SM"
I replaced the same with this new shaped fully plastic ones and my idle got too high since then
Interesting? Our idle RPM didn't change after we replaced the injectors. I feel like it got a little smoother too. We have put like 2K miles on it since the replacement and still running good.
You need to put a oil cooler bypass and change that radiator asap they designed it to have oil pockets inside your radiator that rot out and fail causing oil to get rad ain’t freeze in the oil before it happens to you…. Which it will even more because you had the wrong fluid in the radiator those oil pockets will fail shortly which will destroy the motor. Install a outside the radiator oil cooler once you look into this issue you’ll thank me tremendously because it’s bound to happen to your radiator only a short matter of time before it does . Look into it , or ask a good mechanic who knows Porsche 928s you’ll see im 100% right and I’m believe it or not saving you the motor thats in that car very bad design by Porsche when they built the 928 to place weak pockets inside the radiator to cool oil . I’d change it asap to be safe because after years of it failing on so many other cars you are super lucky to last this long without it leaking and having antifreeze mixed in your oil destroying your motor . You’ll thank me latter for this information all I can say is address it as fast as possible . Real bad design by Porsche , Your welcome , glad I can pass along side me real solid information on to you and help save your motor and car . Don’t believe me…. Look into this you’ll see it’s a major problem with these radiators , install that bypass you’ll be fine then and never have to worry about it ever .
Thank you. I will definitely look into it and see what options I can find to avoid this problem.
Did you vacuum the system ?? You opened it up it needs a vacuum .
We don't have one, so we didn't. Another tool to buy. Didn't matter though because there is a leak somewhere and it stopped working again. More work to do when summer comes around again.
@@C3KPaddock you can rent it from autozone and get your money back when you return it. You would of figured out that you had a leak if you would of properly done a vacuum . Also since you didn’t you might ruin the compressor and have to replace it too along with the new drier again .
@@chillyE30 Good to know. I wasn't aware that was something you could rent from there. We haven't been running the A/C since it leaked down. Thank you for the tip on the vacuum.
@@C3KPaddock any moisture in the system can corrode and kill the compressor as well as clogging up the system. putting it under vacuum for an hour or so makes all of the moisture in the system evaporate and get evacuated. the drier is there to continually suck up any incidental moisture that could get into the system to protect it, it can only soak up so much so it's kind of a sacrificial part, you'll need to replace it again if you try to get the a/c working again for this summer. it's worth it to get a set of a/c gauges while you're doing this (either renting or you can get them + a vacuum pump from harbor freight for like $150) so you can get a better idea of what's not working in the system. also the hoses in pre-88 E30s are older style (not future-proofed for R134a) so you're going to continually have at least a little leakage
@@Vanya2893 I broke down and took it to a shop a few days after we filmed the video to get the A/C vacuumed and filled properly. It worked great for like a week and then gradually got worse over the next couple weeks until it barely cooled again. I think there is a fitting on the dryer that is leaking. The shop said they did a leak test and it was all good, but when I took it back they said they were going to charge me again to service it. Frustrating!!! I hooked up a gauge and the pressure was way down. Going to have to get the equipment and do it myself I guess.
I absolutely love the look of all Porsche 928's. I believe it's the most beautiful car in the world. Unfortunately too many owners didn't take good care of them. I still hope to own one some day. Thank you.
We love the look too! We also like that it is a great blend of an American Muscle style V8 powertrain, European styling, and German engineering.
Its too bad the signature isnt on the glovebox or something more easily removeable. The signature might not increase the price of the car but if the signature was on a sun visor or something you could sell it seperately abd just replace the part with a non-signed one.
Why don't you say what the car cost / Lame
What, you don't like mystery?
928 has great community of knowledgeable owners and people who make and sell parts. I had my 928S's MAF rebuilt in another country thousands of km away by a guy who does this as a hobby, he tested it on his own car before sending it back. Parts prices are not that bad, at least here in Europe where there's many sellers, no need to buy anything from Porsche, though I let them change coolant pump and belt, both of which I bought elsewhere, that job cost me 500 euros. Hengst fuel filter was 12 euros, your part prices seem kinda high to me.
We haven't purchased any parts directly from Porsche. All out parts have come from "FCP EURO" and "928sRUS" websites. The parts due seem a little cheaper in Europe, but the shipping time and cost would counteract the savings. I'll definitely take any advise you have on where to get quality parts cheapest.
@@C3KPaddock I wrote long comment with names of places where I got spares from and it would not appear here, because YT thinks links, even in obscured form are ads? Just some names of places: partworks (they have also ebay shop and ship worldwide), rosepassion, design911, autodoc
All things German end up being a Nazi liability, lol.
Total the estimated repairs and double it and you will be close.
One more thing, I hate to say this but that car will struggle to sell for $10k. Just being real here. People who aren't familiar with 928s overestimate their value and they end up sitting for sale for YEARS. I've seen better 928s than yours, manual, not sell for $14k. It's been sitting on CL, Offerup for 5 years. Just reality man I hate to be the bearer of bad news
We do like the car and enjoy driving it. That said, we also hope to have a profitable (or at least breakeven) auction experience. If it doesn't meet reserve, then we will definitely enjoy driving it. We also don't know if the "Magnus Walker" signature on the dash will help the value. Kind of a wild car whether people care about that or not. He is a big name in the Porsche community, but probably won't add any value. Plan to enjoy the auction experience and see how things work out.
@@C3KPaddock nice man! I didn’t see the Magnus signature but I doubt that will add any value. Maybe BaT is the way to go bc there’s a US ‘80 automatic with a lot of time left and it’s already at $13.5k! 35xxx miles though. I wish people appreciated how good these cars are.
I bought an 88 S4. I did 90% my own work and I have about 10k in repairs. Love driving it,but I am probably 5k underwater. That might sound bad but remember I have a running driving 5 speed that I have been driving regularly for the past 6 years. 5k in the hole for 6 years of semi daily smiles? I would not trade it. What would the depreciation on a 5 year old 25k car be worth that is now 11 years old?
@@TomMarquis66 Exactly!! It isn't always about the money. "Experiences" are often worth more than money. My son and I are enjoying the repair process and learning with every repair. Building memories!
