I really think that we have an issue here in math. You claim that we should do whatever operation comes first, as we read from left to right. But it most definitely matters whether multiplication or division come first. Because if we take the same expression and express it algebraically with an unknown variable, then we will be forced to look at another answer upon simplification. i.e.: 2 + 2 / 2(x + x) So no matter which way I simplify this expression, either this way: 2 + 2 / 2x + 2x Which would then simplify to 2 + 2 / 4x, leaving us with 2 1/2x Or we can do it like this: 2 + 2 / 2(2x) It will leave us with the same simplification 2 1/2x And since x = 1, then the answer for both is 2.5 not 4. So why do we have this problem? Shouldn't we stick to it being PEMDAS. Because the answer will be completely different if we do division before multiplication. Addition and subtraction can be done in any order. So I think it should be the PEMDAS or PEMDSA rule and never the PEDMAS or PEDMSA. I think the rule should be strict on the first four operations. 1.) Parenthesis 2.) Exponents 3.) Multiplication 4.) Division, and after that, it could be (5 or 6) Addition and Subtraction
