Lovatsville 2024 Stallion Pedigree Review with Pedigree Dynamics
Sam White from @Lovatsville and I dissect the pedigrees of their four young stallions and come up with some interesting broodmare sires to target for best results. We also chat about Pedigree Dynamics' analysis methods and some breeding terminologies.

Hi, I am from India. I have a question ? What is the reason behind the growth of height in Marwari horses which were used to be 60-62 inches higher now have reached 70-72 inches in just 4-5 years as a result of demand for heighted horse but this seems unrealistic. Can you please state the reason and other possible ways by which this can happen to a breed.

Hi Naman, a physical change to a breed is usually due to human intervention. Four to five years does not sound like sufficient time for improved nutrition to be a factor, however as you mention that there has been an increased demand for taller horses, it is feasible that breeders have targeted taller stallions and mares to use. Apart from improved nutrition or human mating decisions, I can't think of another factor to influence increased height.

One of the very interesting factors within the Northern Dancer pedigree, apart from the most celebrated influences, is the pedigree of his third dam Arbitrator. In her fifth generation you find Kamara on the tail female line of her sire, Peace Chance and St Leonards who is the sire of her fourth dam. That places the both St Leonards and Kamara in her fifth generation and on the tail female lines of both parents (or as close to as possible given St Leonards is a male). If you hypomate these two it reveals a very unique pattern. The parents of Kamara are full siblings to the parents of St Leonards. If you extend that mating, it has Stockwell as the damsire of both (naturally) horses 4th dams, creating an X-path to Pocahontas on both tail female lines. The presence of St Simon in the third quarter of her pedigree provides yet another. Whether or not this resulted in the expression of performance of such a lineage is certainly fun to ponder. I must state that this research is not my own. It was revealed on a thoroughbred breeding forum I occasionally visit and it fascinated me. So well done to the one who did discover it. I did come across an interesting mating with very similar traits. While perusing the stud records of Statue of Liberty's 2016 coverings (to whom I sent my mare that year), I noticed a mare called North Sea in the list of his consorts. This mating was attempting a similar pattern, however it was less refined when consideration was given to the ability for the passage of expression to occur. Statue of Liberty's grandsire Storm Bird is a full brother to North Sea's second dam Oceana. His sires dam Terlingua is a full sister to North Sea's damsire Pancho Villa. This sets up a similar pattern (kinda, sort of) to the one I described for Arbitrator. This mating was done 3 times, and unfortunately did not equate to success on the racetrack. Perhaps the breeder may persist with the mare that was produced from this mating. The inbreeding was quite close and may have expressed negative traits. Who knows? I think it's worth checking out these pedigrees just for the sake of the unique curiosity it provokes. I know I have wandered from the subject a little (or a lot), but I just thought it might be a good place to share these examples of inbreeding/linebreeding with whomever might be interested.

Tesio was introduced to Mendel theories during a train ride in 1909 if i remember correctly, by a british doctor. Cavaliere d'Arpino was his favourite horse, very very fast but unfortunately too fragile. So he realized that he must watch further, around the world, for his dams. He bought Catnip for a cheap prize, an unconsidered foal from Spearmint. Nogara was a great horse and a great mare. Despite his love for St. Simon he choose a sire from another line, for avoid excessive imbreeding probably. Nearco was a sire like no other, i read that the 80% of the winning throughbred today come from him, via stars like Northern Dancer, Nasrullah, Sunday Silence, Deep Impact and so on...

What a shame Tesio never got to see Ribot race once, let alone achieve his greatness status.

Yes it's a great shame! Ribot was a great example of Tesio's genius.

Not the same thing but just something interesting, mares can actually have traces of DNA from former foetuses they’ve carried throughout their lifetime. It’s a form of chimerism that’s also observed within human mothers

I imagine a few cows would love to be bred to race instead of being farmed as a meat source. I don't particularly like that as humans we live on the meat of other animals but it's a fact of life and as much as I love horses (and cows) in the end they are bred to serve us. Either as food, pets or competitors.

Even responsible owners and trainers are a part of the problem. The Thoroughbred industry regularly cranks out literally tens of thousands of new foals each year, only a tiny percentage of which go on to earn their keep, and there are no guarantees even for those who do. (Google "Ferdinand"--a Kentucky Derby winner) Guess what happens to the rest? It's too awful to say, but involves a cattle truck and a trip to Canada or Mexico. The only ethical answer is to stop breeding so many animals and spend more resources finding good homes for the ones that already exist. What can you do? Adopt if you're qualified. Donate to rescue organizations if you can. Otherwise refuse to participate as a spectator in this ingratiating, abusive 'sport' whose time has past.

Only TWO "tens of thousands". Do your homework.

@@watchgoose In what universe is 20,000 not tens of thousands? Although down from highs in the 50ks during the eighties, this is still waaay more than homes that can be found. Those that make it to the track are only 2 years old, and their bones have not yet fully developed. They face injuries, doping, unnatural living and working conditions. . . the list goes on and on. Thousands of others are slaughtered. How's that for homework? --OTTB owner.

Bwahaha ha ha ha ha ha. That's hilarious. The 'horse' industry is monstrous everywhere. Governments all over the world depend on racing revenue. You're beating a dead horse.

they simply need to re introduce arabian blood in to the breed again . these thourghbreds today look like string beans compared to their founding ancestors. for strong bone, stamina, better wind and other qualities.

Many of the European thoroughbreds don't look anything like the ones produced here in the states. Particularly Australia and Ireland where much of the racing is steeplechase, which requires jumping and not just flat sprinting. On the flip side, most "American" bred arabs are even worse string beans. The polish type (one of which i own) are short, good bone, hardy and fast. Racing Arabs also mirror this a bit more than the "show" type.
