Windows 95 and DOS games on a Wyse Vx0 thin client
มุมมอง 2Kปีที่แล้ว
Here I take a look a getting Windows 95 working on a thin client as well as DOS, all thanks to a Radeon 7000 graphics card add-on and recent developments in the retro gaming community getting Soundblaster emulation working on various AC97 audio chips.

NES - Mission: Impossible - Speed Run (previous) world record - 24:47
มุมมอง 4.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I got a sub-25-minute run several years ago but shortly thereafter my CRT monitor died and I also lost the original footage. Came back to try again only to see that LITERALLY TODAY somebody else posted the first "official" sub-25 run to speedrun.com. I got lucky and beat that run by 1 second. Still significant room for improvement, especially by cleaning up Stage 6. Played on an actual console ...

Is this particular variant with the Radeon 7000M video card add-on called the “V90 Dual Video” that’s briefly mentioned on the ParkyTowers page? I’m only assuming since that’s the telltale difference between this one and the others that exist
Looks like you changed the Colts plays to make it easier
Yep. Was trying to beat the 139 record on speedrun(dot)com
And subbed out the "better" players, though with the Colts it doesn't matter much XD
This makes me want to beat the colts by 100 lol.
Cincinnati by 200 points?
Phirradewphia Eegu!
Smart to find an offense you can loophole. Cool video
I remember playing this and I had a score of 105-5, Seahawks v. Raiders
Great video, I didn't realize it stopped at 99 until I watched your video. I have never scored that much in a game I think at best maybe I hit 80 something but never 99 and above. Love the content glad this came up as a view in my recommendations.
Ill never understand how kid me had the patience to play and finish this game... great game, dont get me wrong. But holy shit the amount of trial-and-error to get past all the "if you didnt switch that one lever you'll die at this point without warning" is staggering
That's what gave it such a high replay value, IMO. Kid me had the patience to play because I only had 2 games - SMB 1 and this.
@@retro-computing-gaming kid me also didnt speak english :D . But I agree, it had a high replay value. The only big issue I had, even as a kid, was how the fast character in general was the OP one: major AoE B weapon, super fast, surprising wide reach on the punch. The gun guy was too slow for me, and boomerang guy was... I dunno, he had his uses on the double-hits but overall I only used the disguises and nothing else. I still love the game though, I just doubt I would ever play through it again as an adult. Kid me used up all the patience adult me SHOULD have :D. Fun video to watch!
@@michelvanderlinden8363 The middle (fastest) character was always my go-to guy for 90 percent of everything - he was just easier to maneuver and his punch as you said covered a lot of ground. If this game didn't have a password system then I'm not sure how many people would have beaten it as a kid. Would have been a tiny amount.
Still more realistic and sim based than current Madden…
Noooooooo! You died!
this worked on Wyse V10L
There are zero links in the description... Why did you mention that in the video?
Do you sell these units? Would totally buy this.
He does on eBay, if you’re willing to spend a hefty price for it
do you have link to where you got hdd and video card? also do you have links to drivers?
The HDD is just a standard 16 GB 44-pin disk-on-module. They're fairly easy to find, though you might have to import from China. The video card on the other hand is a fairly rare accessory - I got lucky in buying a large lot of vx0 units and they all happened to be that variant.
Some of the enemies doesn't hurt you even though they clearly touch you, such as the robot from first mission and lasers, too. You enhanced the game.
Enhanced the game? Are you suggesting I cheated?
@@retro-computing-gaming couldn't said it better.
@@ZARATUSTRA1780 Go learn the game's mechanics before accusing others of cheating.
There are no cheats for that kind of thing, apart from the video being legitimate.
Could you link drivers for w95?
Hi, I think you forgot to add the links to the description because there are none.
Can you share your drivers for Windows 98? I am having troubles locating them all
Great skills..... I used to spend all day on this game... maybe 8 hours huahuahua
I have one of these and want to run Windows 95
hi, where did you get the audio and the rest of drivers? thanks in advance!
Any chance you can link the drivers you used for this build? Thanks!
i think there is a newer improved version sbemu now available that has a bit more fixes and compatibility for this chipset. i have this thin client and OPL3 emulation sounds normal, while here the OPL sounds weirdly out of pitch and the digital sfx sound a bit distorted?
Thanks for the tip - I'll definitely have to check out the latest release. The version here is more than 5 months outdated.
Insanely hard but awesome NES game!
I went to the end entered mtkn as well but didnt know what to do after that
Mad respect. Watching you finish the bulk of level one on just one bar of energy was nail-biting.
I did it! (just the Win98 part at the moment) I put the ISO of Hiren's Boot Disc directly on USB so I could boot without a CD Rom Drive and I had the space for the drivers too, so when I installed Windows I just went back to Hiren's and unzipped the drivers in "My Documents" on Windows partition. Thank you for the inspiration!
can you pls show how you installed dos on it pls ive ben stumped for a year
I used Windows' DOS, which for Windows 95 is DOS 7.1 - so DOS is already here once you install Windows. The trick is setting up a boot option for it. There are 3 files you need to modify - autoexec.bat, config.sys, and msdos.sys. I show 2 of the 3 files in this video so check out the screenshots at 15:49 and 16:19. The one I didn't show was msdos.sys which requires a single line change - bootGUI from 1 to 0. The 2 .sys files are read-only so you'll have to show hidden files and also change their attribute from read-only to actually modify them.
@@retro-computing-gaming thanx brother😀
and whare the heck did you find the video card? thats crazzy
and where you not able to get open gl to work on win98se?
@@graymouser7649 It was an optional add-on. Pretty rare, but I found a stash of units with them installed.
I remember I achieved 96 sacks in a season with Reggie White using the Eagles for an average of 6 sacks a game. Beast mode.
Are you going to sell builds like this? I got your v90 build and it was well setup, I was impressed by the completeness of the build. Having an ati card like this looks pretty cool. BTW I ordered your sempron win98/xp machine, and I sent a note asking to include a stand for the v90 I previously ordered. Make more videos if it isn’t too much hassle.
Ah, now I know who you are. Yes, I shipped your stuff yesterday, Wyse vx0 stand included (check your messages, I did update you yesterday). And I do have this build listed if you go back to my store. As to making more videos, I have like 20 or 30 ideas in my head, it is just a time issue (that and my recording/production equipment is very minimalistic).
Does the USB controller work reliably for you, particularly at USB 2 speeds? For me it likes to bug out and hang whenever mass storage is used, even with just OHCI enabled and EHCI disabled. An easy way for me to trigger it would be to try and reboot the machine while keeping a USB stick plugged in. The buggy behavior is triggered if any of the operating systems hang or don't see any USB mass storage. Sometimes, even USB mice don't work. And if you reboot and have your stick plugged in, you'll even see the BIOS hang forever until you unplug your USB stick. For me, it's a weird, somewhat inconsistent song and dance to get it to work again with USB mass storage. What seems to get the controller to see mass storage again with decent consistency for me is, first, use a PS2 keyboard plugged in before power on (if you aren't already), no PS2 or USB mice plugged in. With buggy behavior in effect, reboot into BIOS settings, turn off the USB functionally entirely (via disable all for OHCI, which will also disable everything else USB-related). Boot into XP, wait for the hourglass on the cursor to go away. Use the keyboard to reboot XP (Windows key, U, R) and go enable OHCI controller again, but leave the other USB settings alone. USB mice work again (if it stopped earlier, sometimes it stops working alongside mass storage). Plug in your USB stick, and see XP tell you it could run faster in a USB 2 port. I use a 512 GB stick, so YMMV, but explorer and XP like to hang here. If it did, bring up task manager with ctrl - alt - delete. Press the alt key and use arrow keys to navigate to Shut Down, press down arrow and select Log Off user. Or use a USB mouse to do it. At login screen, pick your user and wait patiently. It's going to take a little while. You should see signs of life with the hourglass showing on and off. Eventually explorer starts, and USB mass storage works again. But this is still USB 1. I have had zero luck with getting it working again if I enable the USB 2 controller or any of the emulation stuff right away. Or even just toggling the settings each time without booting to an OS. I really like this machine, but the USB thing I experience with mine is a nuisance.
You can do an abridged version where you turn the controller off, reboot, then on with EHCI still disabled and everything. Reboot again, and turn on EHCI and emulation. This usually gets mice working. Stick may or may not work. In XP, if "safely remove hardware" doesn't hang, and right clicking that to bring up properties shows information about the actual device, but XP doesn't mount anything and the actual storage isn't accessible, it can sometimes be solved by looking at properties, uninstall the driver for your stick, let XP do its thing. When done, unplug and replug it in. XP reinstalls the driver, and you're golden when it's done. Sometimes this doesn't work to get the mass storage stuff fully working. I find it to be more of a hardware quirk than anything related to any single OS. This thing happens in any OS I happen to be using on this machine, be it 98, XP, or even Linux. 🤷♀️ And this happens on multiple known-working sticks. It isn't limited to the 512 GB one I mentioned. I've been trying to find a consistent way to get it to bug out and get it working again, but no method works consistently. Rebooting between operating systems with a USB stick still plugged in can trigger the bugginess. Sometimes turning it off, unplugging it, and walking away for a few hours works. It usually does. Until it doesn't. I've seen it not work. If it's just me, maybe the controllers are on the way out. Idk. So I put this info out there to see if anyone else has seen anything similar on their V90LE.
Nice to see emulation on such an old machine. I had imagined that most developers would've updated their emulators to run only on the latest of operating systems.
Thanks ❤
You'd want to put some thermal paste on top of the coin as well ...and you could also just spend a few minutes sanding it to make it flat.
I guess it is hard to see in the video but there is already thermal paste (pre-applied) on the heatsink. Sanding it down is unnecessary is there's not enough variation in the coin's surface to be an issue with making contact with the heatsink/thermal paste.
I didn't have time in a short to explain WHY you would want to use a mobile CPU in this type of setup. In Windows 98, you don't necessarily want a CPU that runs in speeds measured in GHZ, but the slowest speed you can get on a socket 754 CPU is 1.4 GHZ. And while this is a 1.8GHZ mobile CPU, it actually only runs at 800 MHZ as the motherboard runs it at only a 4x multiplier, making it perfect for a Windows 98 gaming rig. Plus its TDP is minuscule, especially at that clock speed.
what would happen if I used such fast CPUs in 98?
This is ghetto af
Are you playing roll cage in windows 98?
Yep. And it plays very well.
@@retro-computing-gaming have you had any USB flashdrive reading issues with this thin client. And thank you will like to play that game
@@The10021k-guy Most flash drives 16GB and smaller (as long as they are formatted in FAT32) work fine, as do some 32GB drives. And USB 2.0 speed is supported.
Nickel fail
The dime is still 92% copper. Combine that with a massively over-sized heatsink/fan combo for a mobile CPU and the CPU runs at barely over room temperature.
Wouldn't it be a downer if you forgot the MTKN password after reaching the final computer on the final level?
Happened to me
The REAL downer was when I was 6 fucking years old with no internet and close to zero English knowledge. I had no idea where to get the password lol

What GPU driver are you using? If I use the CN700 from the VIA site in Win98SE/ME the system gets stuck unresponsive with the monitor turning off. This doesn't happen in XP.
I'm near-certain that that's the driver I'm using. Version 16.01.23.24 from the VIA site.
12 volts powersupply low power consumption Windows 2000 pro support have to be able to play 720p mp4 video. Any suggestions? Kinda apparently it might be a problem with the 720p.... You know of any??? Or can this unit do it. I guess some of the Slim devices should be able to do video, right? So internal graphics card should be made for that?
Can it run 720 mp4 video
Rollcage was the best racing game ever, still is great. Although don't play much, but indeed it is the best old schoool game racer there is. It was amazing and is amazing.
