Stuart Batty Woodturning
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 ม.ค. 2015
A third generation apprenticed woodturner with over 40 years of experience. Stuart Batty is recognized as one of the world’s most accomplished woodturners.
Through years of production turning and teaching hands-on classes, Stuart developed a unique style of the European push-cut technique using fewer tools and simpler grinds to totally eliminate torn grain, requiring less physical effort, and enabling rapid, repeatable cuts. Stuart has pioneered many of the techniques and terminologies that all woodturners use today such as the push-cut, pull-cut, negative rake scraping, 40/40 and bottom bowl gouge grinds.
Stuart’s work includes balustrades and newel posts in Royal and Stately British Homes and a piece in the White House Permanent Collection. He is now focused on helping students improve their woodturning technique. His methodology does not focus on product, but on correct techniqueses and process. It’s a set of universal skills that can be used to make any workpiece on the lathe.

Looks like a good system.🙂🙂
It’s the best system on the market!
Very nice system
Thanks, we certainly think so!
Most excellent !
Excellent video, thank you Stuart
Thanks a lot, Stuart.
Very cool to see Stuart Batty putting out these videos and selling tools again.
Thanks for the great content and tools.
Man, a lathe that can spin this monster at 800 with no wobble, that's just great.
Great information from an expert. Thanks!
I am persian... i live in iran. You are best
What model lathe are you using. I hear no distracting noise from it.
looks like a Vicmarc VL300
Great job. Thank you 😊
I own several sets of these and Love them. Great Product for getting a repeatable edge on your tools
Hi Stu - good to see you doing videos again and releasing new tools. I learned a lot from you at a weekend workshop years ago in Provo!
You should come check out our new school here in Boulder Colorado!
Like the first person who commented I've watched hundreds and hundreds of the top woodturners in the last year and a half as I've taught myself turning by remote learning. I've had the privilege of seeing Stuart in action in Houston. While there are many incredibly talented TH-camrs who have wonderful videos I don't think anybody stands up to the professionalism that Stewart embodies both in terms of his teaching style and how precise he is. His videos matches incredible facility with turning wood. Efficient precise with spotless finish. It's wonderful to see Stewart ramp up his teaching and finally his incredible tools. One of these days I'll sign up for one of his workshops in Boulder at his home base. Purchasing the tools is another story.... You don't buy a Ferrari when you just started driving a year ago!
Amazing cut with minimal effort. "let the tool do the work"
Great information on picking out my wood. What to look for, what not to use.
How do I know which way to mount a bowl blank? If I should cut up hill or down hill?
Of the hundreds of videos I have watched, you describe this the best. Important information I needed.
Love your videos. Very educational. I learn a lot from you. Thanks.
Teaching is an art, some can some can't, this video inspires one to turn and keep coming back. Excellent teaching.
As a beginner, this is very enlightening. By the way, what lathe are you using?
He uses Powermatics in his new classroom.
that lathe is a Vicmarc, I think the VL300
A great explanation of side grain vs end grain cutting. Very well done. I like these short tutorials. Very informative. Right to the point. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Very well done Stuart. Excellent presentation. Great explanation. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Not one wasted word. Excellent instruction packed into this video.
Thank you Stuart for giving of your talents. I stumbled upon a video of your father teaching the skew and turning cabriole legs. You have need Blessed with a tremendous legacy. Thank you Jeff from Pa
What lathe is that?
Beautiful work!
Outstanding video Stuart. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the time and effort.
You’ve explained everything so well and so thoroughly. I’ve learned a lot from your other presentations, but this one exceeds them all. Thank you!
Cool!
Thank goodness not another american
A really golden moment just after 14:40 for my own 40/40 sharpening. Stu uses a strictly single direction of gouge rotation, starting from the wing towards the gouge tip. I'd picked up a two-directional movement that I just realized is the source of occasional over-rotation of the flute. I "know" better, but it's a lot harder to prevent over-rotation with the gouge already "in flight" against the wheel. Once this happens, it's a downwards spiral: you need to over-rotate the gouge again to fully sharpen the wing and maybe you go a little too far past that... and so on. Eventually the wing is trash and turning is a struggle, and it's time to blast the edge away and reset. It's been frustrating, but now I finally understand the root cause. So thanks for another excellent video, Stu!
Anther refresher Stuart greatly appreciated.
An excellent demonstration of ease of cut using a sharp tool and light pressure. Good explanations. I would have liked to see a better view of the tool profile. You mentioned the relief grind but didn't show it at all. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thanks for this one.
As a hobby woodturner this has been an excellent refresher so many thanks.
I wish I’d have had that pencil sharpening idea when I was teaching beginners wood carving 30 years ago. It’s so much simpler and better than anything I came up with to explain grain direction.
Thanks for this one.
This appears to be an excellent well thought out system. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
An excellent description of grain direction in curly maple platter stock and burls. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
A lot of information contained in this video. I will have to begin looking at potential bowl blanks much more carefully. This is a great series. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
After watching this I realize why some of my spindle turning attempts have failed. This is a great tutorial on workpiece selection. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Are you using a 40/40 grind in this video? What size gouge are you using? Thank you!
Very well explained and demonstrated. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Crisp and clear. Thanks.
To anyone watching these videos,go to his website, there’s another 25 of them, everything you need to know about wood turning……how to videos Great information, thanks for sharing Stu.cheers Colin.
Do you do any classes around Indiana?
Hi Joby, Stu is cutting back on quite a bit in club demos and lessons. The good news is that we have opened a new school and factory here in Boulder Colorado. The new classes start in December. Not a great taper if they need a screw and come out by hand
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. This is not supposed to be a Morse taper similar to a tailstock, that would defeat the purpose of a quick change handle system. Hand tightening is more than sufficient to keep the tool in the handle with this system . We also include a "bench wrench" just in case you want to lock the tools in or if when hand tightening is actually too tight to loosen the handle. Thanks again for watching, and stayed tuned for more of our product videos. Jason
You are greatly mistaken, this is a phenomenal system.
Great video!
