    So far, so good with this jig. I mocked up a practice neck out of pinewood as this is my first time. I used my router table to do the truss rod slot and my center finding ruler tells me that that came out perfect. Depth too. I've already done the mortise on a scrap piece of mahogany pressed into the jig, and I've set the neck angle with the jig with the body which is already built. 3.5 mm at the bridge, check. Tomorrow the dovetail tenon on the neck - I've enlisted my 93 year old dad to hold the shop vac hose!

    During the switch from the waist blanket to the full blanket, if you reposition the clips to the far ends of the sandwich it will provide better heat transfer during the initial Full bend ramp up.

    I may be mistaken, but didn't the narrator specifically say and repeat that the sanding bars' surfaces are "flat", and not curved to precisely fit the guitars that have radiused fretboard and frets ? Does Luthiers Mercantile offer "radiused sanding blocks" ? I believe that among the guitars I own there is one flat fretboard and three other radius measurements. Accurate and precise radiused metal sanding blocks would be useful. Any helpful responses are welcome, thank you.

    • @luthiersmercantileinstruct5649
      @luthiersmercantileinstruct5649 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are flat on all sides. They aren't intended to radius a fingerboard. We have radius blocks here for that purpose. www.lmii.com/54-radiusing/s-48/tool_type_or_function-radiusing_fingerboards The bars are good for fret leveling or sanding lengthwise on the fingerboard following the radius. They are also good for prepping material for joining, etc. Hope this helps!

    I was gifted a soundboard with the sound hole previously cut out. Do you think I can cut a disk the size of the sound hole to locate the center and accurately cut the rosette? any suggestions?

    • @luthiersmercantileinternat5786
      @luthiersmercantileinternat5786 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this is probably the best way to do it. Just make sure the plug is snug. Any movement in it resulting in movement of the top could cause an off-center or elliptical rosette channel. Make sure everything is clamped/taped down tight before cutting.

    great jig but just a few Q's 1. will gluing top braces in the radius dish still work after using the sanding jig? 2. will the jig be long enough to do an X-Brace for a dreadnought?

    • @luthiersmercantileinternat5786
      @luthiersmercantileinternat5786 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Julian, Yes, you can still glue in the dish supposing the dish is the same radius as the radius you put on the braces. The jig is long enough. You just need a longer sanding stroke. It helps to band saw the braces close to the radius you're looking for before you start sanding or your upper arms will get quite a workout!

    Strangely they state the file has a safe edge you should place down between the aluminum blocks. The safe edge of course, has no cutting teeth on it. Then later, at 3:54 they say you can extend the life of the file by flipping it over. Some disconnect there.

    • @luthiersmercantileinternat5786
      @luthiersmercantileinternat5786 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two safe edges, the narrow edges, one on the top and one on the bottom. Then, there are two cutting edges on the wide faces. So, you can spin or flip the file. I hope this makes sense.

    Hi there Thanks so much for the great video. One question. With the 20 degree bevel scraping technique that you are using on the hard side in this video would you also use the same technique if the side wood was softer wood such as cypress or in my case Red Mountain Cedar? Or would you choose the chisel side of the blade as it comes and go ahead as you would the top? Thanks Cath

I made a version of the Mac Stew brace cauls, & crack repair cauls with the Delrin. Acetyl Delrin is strong, and you cannot glue the cauls to the guitar, no matter how hard you try. The clean off easily, and really work a treat.

    Super ...It was just what I needed .. But I understand not yet how to milling the same depth on both sides as Guitar body abuts the thickness of your jig + thickness of Neck Joint .. But the neck is against the neck joint. fra Danmark..

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johnny Paulick I think you are referring to setting the depth of cut on the router when cutting the mortise and the setting it again when setting the depth of cut for the tenon. On the mortise side of the jig the body does does not touch the bottom of the template so you depth of the cut will need to be the actual depth of the mortise pocket plus the amount of space between the guitar body and the bottom of the template. On the tenon side of the jig the neck touches the bottom of the template so the depth of cut will be the same as the actual size of the tenon. Hope this helps.
