My Take on all 4 of the Vox Valvenergy Pedals; A Mixed Bag, Pros and Cons
มุมมอง 7422 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm playing through all four of the Valvenergy pedals by Vox in a CAB SIM setting. I have found that these pedals work very well for recording as they are very amp-like. However, I found that the amp-likeness doesn't transfer very well to a live setting. So, a mixed bag, my verdict, they are very good studio tools, but lacking for live performance.

    Just got a nice used one, the pickups are superb, nice neck, tuners spot on, trem works well and after setup it holds tune, its only only fault is that it is quite heavy. I cant understand the point of swapping one floating, two post, none locking trem for another almost identical one.

    I've been using the Silk Drive as an input clipping buffer direct into amp sims with great results IMO. Thus allowing me to incorporate various front of amp analog pedals direct to interface and then using VST modulation/delay/reverb FX with power amp/IR emulators. For example, I'm been able to "slap" TF out of the Silk Drive's input with a clean boost and get the desired result with minimal to zero gain noise! The "noise" you've been getting IMO possibly has to do with the schematic potential for resistance impedance micro-phonics inherent of the Nu-Tube technology itself? I've actually spoken with Yoshi of BOSS about it, and he's not really a fan of the tech personally. I've found that when connecting the Silk Drive to it's own isolated PSU allows for a ridiculous amount of pushed gain into amp sims via it's "preamp" mode volume maxed into a line level input on the back of my Focusrite 18i8. Going into the existing preamp of my interface in a similar fashion absolutely did cause much undesirable noise unless the pedal was in its "STD" mode. Even it's "cab" setting caused noise into the existing pre on the front of my Focusrite. So in my personal experience? Other than the "STD" setting? The other two "Pre" & "Cab" modes don't pair well into existing Hi-Z input impedances, and are probably far better suited when used into a line level (for Cab mode direct recording) and/or into a guitar amps FX return (in Pre mode) to dramatically reduce it's inherent potential for micro-phonic impedance noise issues? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm currently in production of some short vids to fully explain this concept, and should have them uploaded soon, although I can't really vouch for any of the other Valve Energy pedals other than the Silk Drive personally as of now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Great demo and honest opinion YT content BTW my dude! Went ahead and hit "Like & Subscribe"! Cheers!

      It does stay in tune well. I find that it isn't so much that the amount of springs equals better or poorer tuning stability. It's about having the right amount of spring to string tension.

    The one thing about those pedals is that Cab setting works fine in a pinch and at low gain settings but as soon as you bump the gain or try to put drive pedals in front of them, you get the shades of this unpleasant "overdrive pedal straight into the desk" kinda sound. I had a similar experience with Joyo American Sound (Tech21 Blonde clone - also uses analog fiters to simulate a cab) or line outs on amps with emulated cab via analog filtering. I'm no expert but I suspect that analog filters are not sufficiently detailed to replicate the interaction between high harmonic content of cranked amp/overdrives and a real speaker. That said, if I use an IR loader after my Silk Drive (either inside the DAW or something like HX Stomp behind it) this issue is pretty much completely solved. Long story short, for anyone interested in those pedals - again the Cab mode is "fine", but using them in Preamp mode with an IR provides significantly better results in my opinion.

    Having the trem sit slightly high is one trick (your saddle intonation may or may not need to be adjusted) Using the largest size block you can get away with (37mm-42mm) as well as using the lightest springs you can find (the purple FU-Tone are the lightest I think). Guitars with the old style non-recessed top-mount will work better too since you can usually use the bigger 42mm block whereas you might have to use a 32mm on a modern recessed Floyd. Brad Gillis is the king of fluttering...

  • @bluwng
    @bluwng ปีที่แล้ว

    The saddle screws are very high. Best tuning performance is with low saddle height as the break over angle is minimal. You can raise the two posts and lower the saddles instead.

  • @dylanmenzies3973
    @dylanmenzies3973 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably it mainly comes down to friction? More strings more friction points, higher tension per spring gives less play at hook points -> less friction. The bridge posts also introduce friction - the better quality metal etc the less friction there, explaining why some don't flutter at all. The flutter must be caused mainly by the bridge rocking back and forth very quickly, not the springs, although there could be an interaction. PhD anyone?

    • @bluwng
      @bluwng ปีที่แล้ว

      Floating the bridge and minimizing springs will facilitate flutter. You need minimal backlash from springs so ideally you need the bridge floating and the back end higher than level.

    • @jessedagel
      @jessedagel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First check how tight are the 3 springs are stretched and if the bridge is sitting evenly with the body of the guitar. If the bridge is angled upward the springs may not be tight enough. If this is all good and you are still having the same issues then maybe try removing a spring.

    • @jessedagel
      @jessedagel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rodrigofouere4227 That's something you would have to try and see how much pull your springs have. 2 springs might not be enough with 10s, but again, you would have to try. Worse case it doesn't work and it's just a few more turns with a screwdriver to try something else. I should specify, when I say parallel to the body I mean like at 2:34, parallel to the body but not touching or it won't have room to flutter. I believe with the Petrucci models the area underneath the bridge is carved out so that shouldn't be a problem, but I thought I should mention that in case that is not across the board with that line.

    It would seem that not all guitars are created equal, after all... tried putting this fix into practice with an entry- to intermediate-level guitar by Schecter, and it just won't flutter. It actually uses a Wilkinson tremolo, with 3 springs standard, but even with 2 springs and a lot of tweaking with the tension, no flutter is to be had. Perhaps the tremolo, which features a plastic block, is too light.

    • @jessedagel
      @jessedagel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be the block. Is the bridge touching the body of the guitar? I ask as if it is the is probably not enough room to allow for flutter.

    Hello, I use the Silk Drive as my amp and cab sim, and I agree that stacking drives on it sounds somewhat awkward in the top end, and it seems to suffer from a low output in cab sim mode. I found ways to make it work better, and that's to either get an external IR, or by accident I stumbled on the phenomenon that an EP booster placed after the Silk Drive seems to open it up and sound way more natural, and it solved the weird tones with overdrives stacked in it. The volume boost from the EP also helped. I made it work when I played through my church's PA, and I loved it. Do try playing around with an IR if you have one
