This is a high quality video for such a small channel, is that your voice or some kind of AI? it is very articulate, clear and has great pacing, so congrats if its your voice, and a very good AI if it isn't, I can't even tell the difference.

Bought and tried this out right after I 100%'d Nine Sols, and oh boy, it's a damn downgrade... I think I'll end up refunding Afterimage. Great review, by the way.

Ummm most soulslikes are action RPGs, and the soulsborne games are made by Fromsoftware, a Japanese developer, thats why ppl call these types of games "soulslikes", because they are "like" the souls games, Sekiro is literally the only soulsborne game that isnt a RPG, as well as a handful of soulslike games like the Surge 2 and Remnant From the Ashes but the vast majority are action RPGs

This is such a great review, man! I really want to like Anno’s story, but I was LAUGHING at the crazy things that were thrown in at the end. They felt very shoe-horned, but I still ended up liking the game. One thing that I liked about the story was the character interactions. The moments that we had with Ann and Ayane were probably my favorite in the game. The rivalry between the doctors C and the others is pretty fun, and I even liked the little dialogue-less interactions we got with Castor and Melissa after they are sucked into the big portal. As a big fan of pixel-art and cyberpunk aesthetics, I think it’s a solid experience. It’s not the greatest thing and I wasn’t mind-blown, but it was fun nonetheless!

Just saw your Steam review and it brought me to this video. Honestly, thank you for probably one of the most high-effort reviews of Cantata. As a creator, seeing people engage with your work like this, positive or negative, feels great, and I appreciate that you clearly took the time to say something meaningful and speak from your own experience. It's also great to see people really "understand" how the game operates, and you clearly got it and knew how to accurately critique it. Thank you! A few notes though! - Popups can be "frozen" by clicking the middle mouse button (instead of just waiting for the timing). In the game settings, you can toggle this on, or change the delay time for the timer lock, etc. - You can multi-select and move units. It never made it into the tutorial, but if you ctrl+click multiple units or ctrl+click and drag to select multiple units. You then move like normal and will see previews of the units that can move. Not sure if you're planning on returning to the game but hope this makes things easier! The story gets better and better with each chapter (imo!) so if you decide to go back hopefully this smooths things out. But again, thanks for the video!

As of 8/1/24, the things I talk about @5:05 have been patched and reduced to a lower amount (on Steam at least). While I do think this change is positive and improves the game overall, I feel that it doesn't affect my other criticisms.

When I wasn't fighting the controls it was fun. Turning off aim assist didn't do much on Nintendo Switch. I might play it more on PC. The controls seem less janky on mouse and keyboard.

I finished lies of p and after a few weeks i started this, i just recently finished it and holy shit. Ofbcourse the gameplay is great but what i really care about is the story, its fantastic

Honestly the only issue I have with the game is that it has contact damage. Otherwise I love this game, definitely one of my favorite metroidvanias.

Thanks for the in-depth review, you made very clear points and helped save me time as this game doesn't seem like it's for me. No offense to the developers but there's only so much time in the day so I gotta be picky. The hard line for me was what you call the "subtractive" nature of the game, it sounds like the game rewards you with shortcuts through overly empty spaces rather than rewarding you with new areas to explore, and even then has a lot of dead ends.

The visuals and voice over are very professionally done! Overall very high quality work. If I might offer a suggestion, it seems strange to talk about the meta progression first before talking about the moment to moment game play of a run, and in the review was very light on descriptions of most of the actual city building mechanics, focusing a little too much on the overall progression and events. Even with that being said, I enjoyed watching this review, and look forward to more in the future!

There actually is an option in the settings to adjust the aim assist, and it really does help a lot.

Honestly this game wasn't for me at first but when I actually decided to play it I loved it

this game looks cool but i wish there was a bit more flare to the unit combat, not super exciting to just watch hp numbers go down when fighting in a strategy game imo good review tho this helped me figure out if i wanted it or not :)
