One of the world’s rarest parrots need your help. BirdLife Australia and Parks Australia are joining forces and crowdfunding to create a new home for the endangered Norfolk Island Green Parrot. World Wildlife Day

Millions of people travel to and from Australia and China each year and about 380,000 of us here in Australia are of Chinese origin. Today on #WorldWildlifeDay and every day, we can all play a role fighting #extinction by not purchasing or using illegal wildlife trade products. I love China and lived and studied there many years ago. I hope my Mandarin Chinese in this message isn't too rusty. T...
Community feral predator trapping in NZ

On a recent trip to New Zealand I met a group of people in Wellington who've come together to fight #extinction by establishing a community feral-predator trapping group. They use Facebook to connect and share information on which traps need checking and when....
Innovation in New Zealand controlling feral species
มุมมอง 1937 ปีที่แล้ว
Australia has an ambitious but achievable target of culling 2 million #FeralCats by 2020 to fight #extinction of our wildlife. And when I find ideas like this, I know we can achieve it. Last week in New Zealand, I visited fast-growing company Goodnature which - with New Zealand Government support - has built the world's first ever automatically resetting predator trap. Goodnature's story is als...

Raine Island turtle mums rescue
มุมมอง 1.8K8 ปีที่แล้ว
Earlier this month I spent time with Traditional Owners Lloyd and Chrissy and #GreatBarrierReef rangers and scientists surveying and rescuing mother turtles at #RaineIsland, the world's largest Green sea turtle hatchery. The turtles are endangered by climate change, drift nets and marine debris. On Raine Island, changing sand dunes had reduced the hatching rate by up to 80%. But a partnership b...
Raine Island turtle rescue

Raine Island at the top of Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the world's biggest breeding site for endangered Green sea turtles. But after the beach sand dunes changed, hatching success dropped by up to 80 per cent and turtle mum fatalities also skyrocketed with the mums forced to climb up cliffs to lay their eggs and then falling to their deaths. I visited the island recently with rangers, sci...
Australia’s Iconic Malleefowl

Malleefowl’s are iconic Australian birds. And they have a reputation for being terrific dads. But the legacy of habitat degradation, #FeralCats, foxes and fire are putting our Malleefowl at risk of #extinction. Lazy and discussing. Death by poison can not be considered humane. Expert scientists have concluded this in their studies. There is no proven antidote for fluoroacetate. As stated on the msds, think of that before you go putting an artificial replicant into your environment .

It's interesting how whenever there's a video regarding humane killing of pests/ferals there are weirdos in the comments that froth and cheer at the idea of killing animals they genuinely hate, completely missing the reason why it's done in the first place. I mean, it's a small minority and all that, but it's still concerns me.

  • @mphil22

Until people neuter their cats, killing them will go on forever. Sad that this human-created situation of domestic cat overpopulation has brought about resorting to this barbaric practice rather than education and a compassionate solution. Without a long-range plan to change human behavior killing our mistakes will always be necessary. This is a bandaid, not a viable solution.

One panadol or panamax tablet pushed down into a little can of cat food and mixed up a bit after it dissolves - or not. Will kill a 50kg cat [ not a typo ] All up cost under $1. Safe for birds and dogs etc. All cats are feral once out of the house. Around schools and parks at night, picnic spots, camp sites even your suburban front or back yard. Less than a dollar a go.

These shortsighted feral cat killer can kill all feral cats in Australia. They may win the battle against feral cats but a new enemy will emerge as a result of feral cat exterminations. The rodents will eat up and destroy Australian agriculture. It will affect Australian incomes and stomach as well. This cycle of extermination then a new enemy emerges will never stop.

Southern Cassowaries are _not_ the heaviest bird in the word. They are the second (or third, if you count both species of ostrich) heaviest bird in the world. They certainly are the heaviest bird outside of Africa. How about a $300 bounty on every feral pig. Provide licenses for hunters to carry AR-15 riffles, provided by the government (they are actually useful for close-quarters hunting of fast, dangerous animals like pigs). Kill those damn pigs.
