I bet the dude driving didn’t get to drive the pace car anymore for the race

Local auto dealership owner was probably intoxicated and back then authorities had no clue what to look for. Now driving while intoxicated has become big revenue for cities, shame on these state and local governments.

If there was a "restart" then the pace car would have to pull back on the track in front of the race cars. Eldon Palmer had practiced that possibility a few times during the week before the race. There was an orange flag placed in the pits that was the point of "no return" ........hit the brakes hard and stop! Unfortunately during race day, there were hundreds of people standing in pit row and the orange flag was NOT visible. When Palmer realized that.... it was too late to stop and he obviously could not go back onto the track. Looking at press pictures of the car after the accident, it is obvious that the car was going less than 30 mph when it hit. And cars, during that time had heavy duty drum brakes.... no discs. They were great at going, but terrible at stopping. I know that well, because I have one of the original pace cars documented by Eldon Palmer, some years ago.

Sure am glad that Craig Fuller got to reprise “Amie” with his favorite band Pure Prairie League. Wonderful song, wonderful playing. Wish I could have been there.

He was booking down pit lane. No way were those 4 wheel drum brakes going to slow down that car in time.

I drank a lot of beer on back country roads in southern Ohio listening to this record over and over and over, occasionally throwing in a Mcguffey Lane tape just to let Bustin Out cool down.... !!

At the 2:28 mark, the very familiar radio version starts. I like this 1972 and 1975 version here as sung by Craig Fuller. I like it better than the Vince Gill version that VG sang when he was in Pure Prarie League for a few years.

Craig Fuller he is the guy who sang Amie on the radio and the original singer of the band. Vince Gill came later its not his song just sang it in concerts. There voices almost sound a like that's why I never knew growing up in the 1980's that he wasn't the original singer plus Craig's voice is much smoother i like his voice better!

On the day following this incident, the NY "paper of record" reported the accident was caused by a missing flagpole!?!?!? NY newspapers.........getting it wrong for OVER 50 years!

Haha! Just saw this video. If I remember correctly, that was at Season Good Pavilion, Eden Park. They played a super show. They didn't want to stop when it was time, and a cincinnati police officer scurried around the stage looking for "the plug" to pull. The band finally ended the show, and picked it up again at The Big Bar in Covington. Great memories!

It looks like he was going flat out down pit row and then realized he was running out space. He then panicked because he would be going back out on the track. Must have been Hemi!

In my opinion, Pure Prairie League was always so much better, whenever Craig Fuller was in the band, as in this clip.

I think I saw them in 74 or 75 and Fuller was already gone. Sad. But still was a great concert.
