The history of Hillsborough High School
Elizabeth and D.P. Davis
A short history of D.P. Davis who developed Davis Islands in Tampa and Davis Shores in Saint Augustine. His marriage to Elizabeth Nelson ended in mystery and tragedy. This is Tampa’s version of The Great Gatsby.
There’s way more to the tale but time constraints kept this minimal.

Great video. Tiki Gardens is the stuff of my dreams.
Thank you ! Amazing place!
Let me add a detail that is not well-known. The dredging project to create the islands was awarded to Stone & Webster Engineering and Construction out of Boston. The construction superintendent on the project was my grandfather, Jack MePherson. He rented a house on Swann Ave. with his wife and 2 daughters during the project. One of the daughters was my mom, Claudia McPherson and she went to Gorrie School. When the project was done, he moved to Louisiana for his next project, building power lines through the swamp.
That’s amazing and that was a huge job! Wow
Very interesting.
I agree… much mystery
Cool Rex! Elizabeth Nelson was Gasparilla Queen to King Curtis Sparkman Sr., my mom's uncle, in 1925 and that's when D. P. Davis said "I'm gonna marry that girl!"
That’s amazing my friend !! Thanks for all your support! So much amazing Tampa History !!!
Rear train sta. was moved out on sharpsferry rd. private prop. can see from rd.
Wow I didn’t know that … very cool
Went there when opened as kid, thru all school days with girlfriends. Train in Jefferson Bayou, Tx. ,operating. '85 watched the giant skyride tower cut, laid down cut scrap. House develop. strip mall their now! 😭
A very cool place n memories remain ! Thanks for watching !
As a kid in the early 60s, I used to buy my split-shot sinkers there at Maves and fished in the Hillsborough River for brim. The Arcade was like entering a royal palace. Capitalism has no conscience or soul. 😥
Memories remain …
In 1974 my Plant teammate Judd Semeyn ran for 254 yards in the last Turkey day game. What a beast he was.
Wow that’s wild !!
These women are absolutely precious! I love their stories!
Yes … I need to streamline a way to record memories - imagine how we could use that in all high schools!
Another fantastic oral history lesson.
Yes I learned so much! Look for Blake High memories soon and thank you so much for your support! It really means so much!
What a wonderful verbal history of Tampa. And now that it's on video, it should last forever.
Yes amazing ! I’m trying to upload part 2 soon!
My uncle Reggie on the basketball ball team #25 Reggie # 35 jimmy
Mr long look like he was the coach
I love those days at HHS -- yes we had great players on Basketball team!! Go Terriers!!!
For me as an European it's fun to see videos like this showing smaller towns history.
Yes much history ! Thank you!
great work Rex!
Thank you so much!
My Great Uncle, James (Jimmy) Lingerfelt and his wife Hattie, owned the Arcade Barber and Beauty Shops. Not sure when they took ownership but I know they had been there for several years until the arcade was no more. He opened his new Barber shop after the arcade was torn down in a building just to the north of old arcade and it was in that shop he gave my oldest son his first haircut. I have such strong memories of growing up in Sulphur Springs. Life was simple.
Wow thanks for sharing ! Great memories yes
Great History of this landmark
Thank you sir! I appreciate your support as always !
Sadly, we lost one alumni. Jamie Dietrich passed away in 2004 at the age of 26.
Condolences
Duval High may have won a football game, but they are now ancient history! HHS is still here and still thriving!
Yes … long forgotten Duval - Go Terriers!
Great video! I would have graduated from this class if I did not move during my high school years. This class looked like so much fun.
Thanks ! Yes it looks very cool!
Cool
Thanks my friend!
Thank you for posting this, my Father loved it.. He was number 65 on the Football team and this was his senior year..❤
Very proud of him and Go Big Red! Such rich history!
Good memories
Looks like fun times! Thanks for watching!
This episode was so meaningful to me. This was my first year. How did I know the chronicler and I shared a year together. I was c/o 86. Love your HHS videos.
Thank you so much and yes great times at HHS!
My Grandfather Edwin Crews was a Coach at HHS in the 60’s and maybe the early 70’s, but I do not know the exact years. I was born in the late 60’s and he was living in Tampa just a few blocks from the school. He was a Colonel in the Army and then became a Coach and Drivers Ed. Teacher at HHS. My Mom, Peggy Crews also went there. I am enjoying seeing a graduation that is very close to what my Mom would have experienced! Thank you for all your efforts.
Thanks for watching and Go Big Red!
Thank you for finding this film. I was born in the late 60’s and I have so many fond memories of visiting here with my Grandmother many times!
Yes many memories!! Thanks for watching !
I am Black History. I attended Howard W Blake when it first opened. Thank you Mr. Hearns!
Yes ! Mr. Hearns is amazing!
Great video does any one remember the old address of the school.
The old Tampa Trib states 1131 Spruce… (currently that building is Stewart Middle with an address of 1125 Spruce-- not sure why it changed)
Didn't have the poles and chains until after '79
Go Big Red!
I loved my time at this school ..i had fun and met the love of my life there..68 years later he passed but we had a great life !!!!
Awesome
I started in 1953

Condolences and those look like fun times at HHS
graduated last may and i already miss hillsborough
It’s an awesome school ! Yes so much history - I hope u enjoy my videos!
OK Rex, the statues were destroyed, not "lost". The question is a) By whom? and b) why was/were the guilty parties not required to replace them? I done by contractors, their insurance would have to have covered this!
I don’t know … it must be during the 76 renovation …,broken and at some point under auditorium by 1980 - then this pic is 1984 and in the language office as I recall …then in the 06 renovation I’m told they were tossed and Athena’s foot is still in the media center …
I am of ghe class of 1955
Thanks for watching ! Enjoy the other videos about HHS I did - Go Big Red!
Good years Good times 👍
Yes ! Thanks for watching !
Terrierific!
Yes very cool
One of the best you ever did. Thanks Rex!
Bobby Floyd put this together -- he’s amazing
❤
Thanks for your support !
I was a Jr that year and since we were sharing a campus and going to school at noon, my "after school" job at Robinson's Department Store started at 6 AM. I would paint the store until it opened, grab some lunch and then go to school.
Wow - that’s wild
I remember doing safety village in the mid 1970s as a kid. They had it set up as a bicycle safety course, and provided bikes for all of us going through "day camp" at Lowery Park sponsored by the city. It's a shame it is gone.
Yes- great memories
I'll probably be accused of being old fashioned but I think the style of the original design was in a class all its own and rivaled many colleges. I understand the need to bring the facilities up to standards but much of the prestigious look of the original is lost.
Yes -- I agree … beautiful school
Great video. As always. You know. Even though I went there for three years (c/o 86) I have no memory of ever entering the media center. Hmmm....
Lol I was Class of 84 and it never seemed busy
I lived through this and hated all of the renovation
Messy yes!
Fine job Rex. I was so disappointed to miss my Jr year due to the renovation. I am so happy that a lot of the "renovation" was corrected years later. Cheers
Yes sir ! Strange era in our Terrier History!
This was so nice and brought back so many memories!
Glad to here this! Go Terriers!
Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching
My class 93 ❤ Great video
Fun times! Thanks for watching!
This was very nice. I actually designed the drill for Mr farmers last halftime show. It was an honor to work with him and the big red band.
That’s very cool!!!
I've also heard a rumor about a goat or cow being taken up there. Not sure if that's true. Great video!
Could be…. Definitely lots of mythology …. I may go back up and look around again one day- thanks for your support!
