You have to watch your amperage with only using 3 plugs off the 30 amp port. That will limit you to roughly 10 amps per line if all pulling the same power/ powering a load.

Good solution, however a lot of generators don't have the 120V 30A plug, but rather 240V split phase one. Running a 240V 30A cord to the house then getting a breakout adapter is the solution for those types of generators.

Minor quibble: Don't run any compressor bigger than a little pancake nailer on an extension cord - plug the compressor directly into the wall and increase the length of air line instead. Bigger compressors really like to weld their plug onto the end of an extension cord. I'm not the only one who's had to learn this the hard way.

Sounds like you are suffering from Brand Resentment, IE You'd like the Eco-Flow or the Bluetti but you either can't afford them or you don't like spending money, Another thing is Sogens are not a scam, they are made to do a certain job and they do it very well and most of them have a 5 or 6 year warranty, Also you have to look at what type of batteries they have in them, The reason people buy Eco-Flow and Bluetti is because people expect certain standards and these two brands tick all the boxes, So don't go knocking the Market leaders because you can't afford them or don't want to spend the money, I am pretty sure if you were put in a room and offered either of these two brands or the one you have Then I am sure that you would walk out with either the Eco-Flow or the Bluetti, You appear to want to get out of it as cheaply as possible and in the process you resent the Ones you Can't Have, You've bought a No Name Brand Sogen, The Bottom Line Is, Regardless of the Brand If it does what you want then it has done it's job and that is all that matters, So forget the Brand thing Just enjoy what ever you buy and leave it at that, But don't try and try and tell us that That Sogen is on the same level as Ec0-Flow or Bluetti.

Thank you - I've been wading through the multitude of youtube videos for a month now and am more confused than ever lol. I've concluded that, instead of being lured in by the marketers, I need to first put more effort into figuring out what I absolutely NEED during a temporary power outage vs. off-grid for months following a natural catastrophe, versus just saving money by reducing electric consumption -- and then look for specific solutions. I'm a single, 70yoa city girl and would love to go off-grid completely but I live a frugal, minimalistic lifestyle anyway so I don't need to spend thousands and thousands to power a typical modern lifestyle house for even a day. At any rate, your chart is interesting and helpful and making the clear distinction between a generator and a power station might be a wake up call for some people :)

I ordered a big Ecoflow because I need 30 amps of backup power and 220 voltage for the water pump. I'll charge it with a 7.5 pto generator on a small diesel tractor, our current back-up power system. I want to be able to switch on the generator panel in a power outage, get through the night, and then take my time about firing up the generator tractor to recharge the Ultra, if necessary. In most situations to date, power outages have only lasted about eight hours at most... except for the Ice Storm. It lasted ten days.

I would advise you to see if you can actually charge it with your generator. I can't with my regular generators, I have a 1200 watt and a 3000 watt. The Ecoflow won't do it, constantly reboots, charging is erratic, the load is all over the place causing chaos at the generator. They need really clean power to charge. You might be okay with a PTO, but I'd be interested in the results, let me know how it goes. I'm going to be getting an inverter generator for this purpose, video on that will be forthcoming.

I was actually running it as what I thought was an ups but the wave 2 shut off. Upon inspection I noticed the delta 2 was depleted of battery and would not charge by any means. Took two weeks to get Ecoflow to come up with a return authorization and my choices were to return for a refurbished unit once mine was received or wait for mine to be serviced. Decided to go with the refurbished and still took almost a month to get the process completely resolved.

The All-in-one power stations are indeed overpriced. However, if you buy them on sale, and know how to expand them using aftermarket components (instead of branded, oft proprietary ones), you can save money and end up spending near the same as building your own power station. Plus, the all in one solutions have worked out all of the safety and design questions, as long as you use the unit in accordance with its tolerances and parameters.

  • @BePatient888

Interesting analogy so, using that definition, the gas or propane is the true generator in your non-solar generators. Anyhow, Solar power stations are good all-in-one solutions for people who don't educate themselves enough, or trust themselves enough, to build a safe DIY power station from wiring batteries to an inverter, including the appropriate wire gauges, shut offs, and fuses. Then add in an appropriate solar energy controller to feed your batteries without damaging them.

Once I decide on the solution, it will be a whole other video, but basically an Ecoflow can charge quickly from "shore" power, so I assumed a regular generator would do it. Not so. They need clean 120v AC power with low THD. So either an inverter generator, or an inverter on my truck, or a clean sine wave UPS plugged into a regular generator, or something like that. Or, solar panels.

Pecron is very reliable. I have many power stations...Pecron e1500lfp, 2 Pecron e600lfp, Bluetti AC180, AlphaEss SG2000, and yes, even the Solarplay Q2501. Also Allpowers S2000 pro, and a couple of smaller Bluetti...EB3a and PS54. I have several more, some are off brand. So far, all have worked well. The Bluetti and the Pecron are the best. Also have a Jackery Explorer 1000v2 that is sure to be reliable. I also have 2 Pecron 1242 DC-DC chargers that convert a 12.8v lipo4 100ah battery into 42v 500watt output. That will, by using it as solar input for most power stations allow it to be an expansion battery. It will charge the power station at up to 500 watts from the lipo4 battery. So far, I have 6 lipo4 batteries, each supplies 1280wh. It will not work with the Solar Play, and I do not know why. It works with all the Pecrons, the Bluetti AC180 and the AlphaEss SG2000. Some I have not tested, or the max solar voltage is less than 42 volts. After having issues from Hurricane Helene and being without power over 1 week, I went sort of nuts with buying power stations on sale.

A couple things to consider. 1. A gasoline generator will do you no good if you don't have gasoline. And we all know that it's difficult to store fuel, at least in any meaningful capacity and you can't do so indefinitely. 2. I and many others live where hurricanes hit and kill entire grids (NC), so you're not going to be able to obtain fuel if you don't already have it if the stores can't pump it. Even if a store can pump fuel, are you actually going to make it there to get it? What if the roads are impassable? If the roads are fine and assuming the pumps are working and the store will/can sell it to you, how much can you carry? Will any be left? You also can't run a gasoline generator indoors. That poses a couple risks. The generator itself could be stolen and during natural disasters you're advertising your whereabouts and that you have energy. Best case scenario is to have multiple "solar" "generators" from the big manufacturers such as EcoFlow and have both solar panels and a gasoline generator. The brands that you say are just maketing also cost more because of their charging capabilities. You can run a gasoline generator for a little over an hour and 20 minutes, then take the solar unit in your house without announcing your presence and have the ability to charge daily if sun is available and sufficient. All this prepping stuff has to be layered. You'll still need candles, fuel oil lanterns and other cooking utilities. I get what you mean, but at the same time a generator doesn't generate anything without fuel. And like I said, good luck getting an inexpensive "solar genertor" or power station to recharge in 1.2 hours from AC and in less than 5 hours with ideal solar conditions alone. The big companies actually have paid for that R&D, and they'll be around when something does go wrong to answer a phone . Those other companies may not be. You may be paying more, but you're actually paying for something. Plus, like you said, there's always sales!

It’s funny that I was offended by this video. It’s your thought process. Teaching us like children. Some need to be educated like this. It turned out good and you’ve already taken the criticism from others and fixed some of the plans you made. I’ve watched all kinds of videos like this and you did well. I’ve got 4 or 5 of these heaters now and all are in different configurations . Thanks for your time and effort to putting this video out so others can see how to do this and how not to do it.

It's really me that's the child lol. I'm no expert and don't pretend to be. I'm what happens when you watch too much TH-cam and think you can do stuff. :)

Any concern of the fuel gelling with the tank outside?

    • @HollisDoesStuff
      @HollisDoesStuff 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

Not really. Diesel is the same as furnace oil, which is commonly stored in steel tanks outdoors in this area, same as big trucks.

Consider wrapping the fuel line to prevent gelling during extream cold

Might be an idea if I run into issues, but diesel/furnace oil is commonly stored outside in steel tanks around here.

Good little heater! Your exhaust looks like it may have a low spot int he line? You don't want that. you will be getting inline condensation and it will build up in that low spot plugging the exhaust. That could shut the unit down. Also the fuel being outside could get thicker and gel in the cold so a fuel additive it in order or add a little alcohol to thin it.

I'm making a bit of a change to how the exhaust is routed, so it will be pointed downhill and away from the wood box which should solve the condensation issue as well. We'll see how it goes with the fuel, but diesel/furnace oil is commonly stored outside in steel tanks around here without issue. Thanks!

@@HollisDoesStuff I'm glad that you caught that the exhaust shouldn't be touching the wood and needs to be on a downwards angle. The muffler should also be facing a bit more downwards as well and horizontal, so that any water buildup will just drip out. As for the diesel tank outside like that, you might want to find some diesel additive. I forget the name, but it's design to keep the diesel from gelling up. Also, you might want to put some fireproof insulation around the big black pipes as well as you will lose heat with them being partly outside like that. Please let us know how this works out when it's like -25C. Or more. We have several greenhouses, one being our "main" one, which is the largest. Not huge or anything, just 11x11x11. We 'insulated" with 3 layers of bubble wrap and an outer layer of 6 mil poly. Currently, we heat it only with an electric heater, 120V, 15 amps. That thing sucks the power when it's like -15C or lower. In fact, sometimes, the inside goes too low. I'm about to order one of these heaters, but more like the all-in-one you showed. I want to put that into the greenhouse and if it actually does have a thermostat, like a house furnace, then set it for maybe 10C. If it doesn't, I'll design an ESP32 thermostat that can transmit data to the house. So I am curious how well it works with super low temps. Take care and stay well.

i bought an Ecoflow a couple of years ago to provide off grid power for my camper, which I use as a cabin. I'm quite happy with it and bought a cheap solar panel off Amazon which will power it up on a sunny day no problem. You are absolutely right saying you get what you pay for generally,
