REBEL RIDGE (2024) - Movie Review
Against all better judgment, David refuses to give up on Ian!
Yes, the guys are back to review another new movie that the persistent and persuasive Mr. Fowlie hopes will make a believer out of our resident sourpuss. Unfortunately, the film at hand is the latest Netflix actioner, REBEL RIDGE!
Aaron Pierre stars as a stoic martial arts badass whose bike trip through Redneckville becomes a week-long gauntlet of extortion, corruption, revenge, and more tough-guy glowering than a thousand furrowed brows.
It's not surprising that Ian didn't respond to this one; what IS shocking is that REBEL RIDGE was directed by one of his favorite filmmakers, Jeremy Saulnier (BLUE RUIN, GREEN ROOM). The new movie represents a departure for the indie visionary, whose blood-drenched, off-the-wall crime operas made him one of the new century's most exciting young voices. Comparatively squeaky clean in its presentation, REBEL RIDGE is so lacking in Saulnier's hallmarks as to be more of a dare than a sensical film.
Watch as the guys talk RAMBO, rural Internet, "factoid screenwriting", and the inherent magical properties of coconut water!

REBEL MOON: THE DIRECTOR'S CUTS (2024) - Movie Review w/ Armond White
มุมมอง 3149 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Ian and Armond close out their months-long coverage of Zack Snyder's Netflix saga, REBEL MOON! The guys covered the "theatrical" versions of Parts ONE and TWO earlier this year, and now they're back with a look at the recently released "Director's Cuts" of both which, according to the director, offer a completely new experience of his off-brand space fantasy. At nearly double the run-time, the ...

Talk about a long, strange trip! On this month's leg of their Return to Hammerland, Ian and AC take a waterlogged detour through THE LOST CONTINENT. Co-directors Michael Carreras and Leslie Norman's tale of a doomed vessel transporting disreputable passengers (and dangerous chemicals!) promises intrigue, monsters, and mayhem. But there's hardly any of the last two and the intrigue isn't especia...

This is it! The final fight! Ian and Don drag Bryan back into the ring for one last look at the ROCKY franchise. In this surprise-studded episode, the guys look at the universally maligned ROCKY V and the Director's Cut of the beloved legacy sequel, ROCKY BALBOA! The Warren Commission took 10 months to investigate because it took them and associates 10 months to plan the assassination. We all should know by now based on documentaries, films, and interviews who really pulled the trigger and it wasn't Oswald. If Oswald really did it then he had a lot of pull to change the motorcade plans. To conveniently get his job at the SBD just in time. Or maybe just by luck of chance all of this happened because he was just a crazy lone gun man looking to put himself in the history books. I think someone who helped make this film knew the truth about how it was actually orchestrated. Like that guy that portrayed Roscoe Anthony White looks similar. An interview of Micheal Ralph Paine talking similar to The way Oswald talks. Someone knew these little details to put in this film. Conveniently enough this films comes out when a lot of " close " people have died already.

My take on Spaulding's involvement with the family... well, we now obviously realize he is. However, for someone hypothetically watching House for the first time and not knowing anything about the trilogy, I'd think it would be obvious that Spaulding _is_ a part of them. Granted, he does repeatedly attempt to dissuade the Young People from looking for Dr Satan's lair or whatever, not wanting them to invariably be found and killed by his family living nearby, but this isn't done cause Spaulding's heart is in the right place (he's obviously a cold blooded killer in how he deals with "Ski King" & his half-wit partner attempting to rob him) but b/c he's the elder of the family, is settled comfortably into his roadside business, and realizes the family murdering more suburban twenty-somethings will inevitably lead to more trouble and police, which he'd rather not deal with. That aside, while I enjoyed the trilogy, House is the stand out movie for me. The ghastly characters are so animated and over the top that it makes it easier for the viewer to sort of go along with them even though they're monstrous people. DRs took all of that prior zaniness away, and we're left with grim thrill-kill characters who aren't nearly as frightening, nor as entertaining to watch ...especially the Otis character, who by the sequel didn't retain any of TCM2's Chop Top flourishes that Moseley brought to that character in House.

-I’m late but just found this and I’m a fan of you guys so joining the convo anyway!! -Also yeah Moonwalker and Wicked City is in the future !! 36:27 - But I suppose Wall Street, Harry n the Hendersons, Barfly, Fatal Attraction and The Lost Boys were modern?…????. (⊙_⊙’) Speaking of Fatal and Wall Street, I agree with you about Douglas’s character. When is he NOT an absolute insufferable (and immoral!) piece of subhuman woman beating home wrecking scumbag with no concept of self accountability- - also can’t forget the full blown homophobia towards Roxy in Basic..was that just his typecast or his established brand at that point? Clearly deserving to get what was coming to him but constantly getting away with his unhinged bullshit.. tossing away women’s lives (and protege for Wall Street) because of choices he made! How did Kirk Douglas sign off on this lol… Michael plays that character to a T! it’s like a freakin pattern at that point! - I find it funny how Fatal had the original ending where Douglas actuslly goes to jail for killing Alex, thus actually paying for his crimes! And in Basic he nearly got the proverbial axe.. but again, nah. WHY, Michael?! Why are you like this!! -What are you guys thoughts on the queer presence in this film? As someone that IDs as sapphic you didn’t see much of that in mainstream film back then. - Lastly, Basic 2 is awful. Chick swims out of a sinking car that drove off a bridge during 100mph bj. Seriously.

Mark's got the voice down! When I was a kid, they had a Beetlejuice x Universal Studios Monsters rock show at Universal. I'm with him on this one- Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was much better than it had any business being in 2024. Wasnt perfect, but a lot of fun & a servicable sequel to one of my favorite movies of all time. It was definitely a little busy & overstuffed, but I had a lot of fun with it. I want to see it again to see how it sits with me after multiple viewings.

Revisiting this, again. I'm somewhat reminded of another discussion. Intolerance! M.R. is a movie about intolerance towards crime, criminals and human fallibility. Some things that are always contemporary. Contemporary contempt. Huh. Another rambling: After looking at M.R., I wonder how a Judge Dredd movie by Spielberg would look like. Or S. Craig Zahler instead! Vince Vaughn could play Dredd. He is a robust guy. But I've only watched parts of M.R to be honest. I should watch it completely.

The fact is White wants to be considered one of the greatest film critics of all time, along with Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris. But he is not in league with them because, in their day, film critics were of higher importance than they are nowadays. He can be very thought provoking when he is not busy trying to settle some scores, like with why the world ( and the Internet ) doesn't recognize his self importance.

Controversial it may be... but I know the reason why his recent work hasnt been his best. It's his partner. Since he has been engaged to Charlotte Kirk he has co-written nearly every film with her and he has put her in the lead role every time. The problem is, she cannot act or write to save her life and he clearly refuses to accept that (or she is pushing him to do this). I honestly think if he dropped his constant promotion of her, wrote a film himself and kept her far, far away from it, it would probably be amazing.

When I was 13 back in 1965, my father had some comedy albums like Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley and Godfrey Cambridge. So, I got a sense of where Mr. Cambridge humor was coming from. No foul language was used in any of these albums. Society was white and black. One can understand why Cambridge would play such a part knowing his past. 1971 was the beginning of the blacksploitation movies e.g., Superfly, Shaft and Sweet Sweetback showing blacks in other that subservient roles. We all knew that this was the beginning. There was some obvious undertones played out in the movie that most black people would immediately pick up on. The skin color thing was loud & clear but the cultural impacts was left up to the audience to interpret.

This was a fantastic conversation! I found I agreed and disagreed with all of you at some point or the other. For my money, the first film is the only one that is a real film. As enjoyable as Rocky II is, I don't think it has nearly the amount of authenticity and nuance. It feels like a movie made to provide the wish fulfillment for the audiences that wanted him to win in the first place. I hate that Stallone disregards the whole eye/southpaw issue from II when we get into RIII and moving forward. I think RIII is absolutely sliding into the cartoon era, and RIV is that cartoon fully realized. While I agree with Ian in that RIV is not a good movie from a narrative and character standpoint, I can also appreciate it for the cartoon that it is. I can totally see how it is somebody's favorite in the series without it being the "best." For my money, it's easily the most rewatchable of the bunch because it is that perfect distillation of the series. Kind of like how Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is the best of those films, because it puts all the elements together. (That said, I think there is an argument to be made that F13FC is also the "best" of those films, while RIV is not.)

25:15 Besides the obvious exhibitionism, it's provocation. He is a sex addict and wants other people to join him in "debauchery". A sex dirtbag. I was listening to a podcast of "reactionary" commentators from England and they were discussing the painter Francis Bacon. He was of the post-WW2 generation and , going from the commentary from the podcast, had a knack for serving a little extra alcohol to his guests. Guess to make them lose their inhibitions. Louis likely is on the same ballpark. Sex addict that is always chasing the latest high. He thought that now that he had made it to the "Big City", away from the prudes and now he can jerk off, drink alcohol and call hookers anytime he wanted to. As a comic he had a life on the road, spending hours driving and living in hotel rooms likely watching hours and hours of the porn channels. Giving birth to the anomie. I can think of another comic that could get in trouble anytime. But his fetish is ... special and few would thread there.

I have to take small issue with the critique of the insertion of the”Strange Love” segment to the soundtrack: It was sappy, syrupy, and ridiculously mawkish-perfect for Lust for a Vampire.
