How to turn a hydraulic lifter into a solid lifter when checking piston to valve clearance on a 5.0 Foxbody or SN95 mustang. A must when doing a cam swap with aftermarket heads. This works on stud mount rockers as well as factory pedestal rockers. When using pedestal rockers, you MUST use an adjustable pushrod with the solid lifter to get zero lash.

Joe I just purchased 2 tbi systems because I broke the fuel manage block. The problem is the unites I bought I was told that it was for a 82 corvette however; the tbi's are rodchester 24 and the Vett is Rodchester 22. I believe they are for a 305. Not sure if I should rebuild the 24 and put them on the 350? Good deals are some time not as good as you think. Let know what you think or maybe you can use these Tbi units. If you wish to see the 24 tbi I can send you pics to your email.
@@10rrace All CFI throttle bodies are the same; Rochester model 400. The difference is the injectors. You can swap the injectors accordingly depending on application. I don’t have any use for CFI parts anymore. I sold my T/A about 18 months ago
The surge caused by the cam, that causes low idle vacuum like 10-12in, is because the cam doesn't have enough Lobe Separation Angle(LSA) for Fuel injection(FI). FI requires about 20in of idle vacuum to operate the Fuel Pressure Regulator properly. If it doesn't make enough vacuum at idle rpms to actuate the FPR, there will be around 20% too much fuel being put in, until enough rpms are hit to create at least 17-20in of vacuum. I'm not saying he's doing the idle procedure wrong at all. But, it would run as well as a stock motor if that cam had a few more degrees of LSA. Similar stock factory performance engines, with similar cam specs, run around 116-117 LSA so they can have 20in of vacuum at idle. I don't know why so many aftermarket cam companies haven't figured that out, but I assure you it's a wide spread problem...
It's in the factory service manual.
I’m well aware
I would definitely be interested in a production numbers breakdown of how mamy were made year by year with colors etc Great video

Unfortunately there are alot of “know it alls” that think they know what is best. If I get asked a question I tell them my experience and any advice to try to help and not to try to impose my own opinion on others. I definitely try to help young guys because they can easily be strayed away from the truth. TH-cam has become a wasteland of bs especially in the subject of automotive knowledge.
Beautiful
Hi all, I’ve been setting my base idle in a different ways, some work better than others. I will use this method and see how stable my idle gets. I have that little plate in between the TB and the IAC. I guess I will combine a couple of methods adjusting the throttle stop to 0.010” + 1.5 turns with a feeler gauge and then adjust the air flow via the set screws on the throttle plate all of these wit that IAC and spout disconnected. Only one question do I have to disconnect the battery after all the adjustments were done for a computer reset, or it doesn’t matter???? Thanks for sharing👋🏻
@@josecisneros2801 The battery should be disconnected afterwards.
That is such a beautiful car and I really do enjoy seeing it because back in 1967 I bought one brand new. Mine was black. No vinyl top. It was an SS 396 but mine had the red interior black exterior with the red stripe like you have and to top it off and I think on yours would make a big difference too. I had the red lines tires with the rallies to finish it off and mine was a 4-speed. Also I had the car for probably 20 years. I'm 70 now and I still wish I had it back LOL
What a beautiful car!
@@Mr_Lightheart Thanks. It’s getting there. Came together ok for a garage job. 👍
So all your doing is unplugging the iac, and the distributor spout set your idle while running, then plug everything back in
Pretty much
good job bro
Joe, your videos inspired me to ditch the crossfire and upgrade to a SPR modified TBI on a Weiand X-cellerator intake. I took the 84 vette out and it outperforms the crossfire through the entire powerband. It is not the same car. My vette has a 350 not a 305. The car is insane fun to drive now. I have heads, headers and TKX transmission sitting in the garage. I need a week or two off from work to complete. Thanks for the videos.
This was great but I'm not doing all that for a stock worn box. I will stick to the 1/8 turn method.. The new quick ratio high dollar box I'm going to buy on the other hand i will definitely use this method.
Thanks for the helpful video. I have a very similar engine setup except mine has a B303 cam with 75mm throttle body (placed in a 68 mustang). What did you have your initial timing set at? Or what should I be looking for when setting it?
My initial was at 16 degrees. Cams like the E,B, and TFS1 bleed off a lot of compression due to the overlap. I would put a vacuum gauge on it, start at 14 and see what it likes.
I had an '83 Black and Gold with the luxury interior. I don't think the '84 had slats in the front bumper. I don't like when I see the flat black spoiler painted glossy. Early '85's had the old spoiler and engines. I went shopping for an '85 with the new spoiler and fuel injected engine as soon as they came out but the dealer said they were not shipping the new spoiler design yet and only carbureted engines.
Of course it did 🤣 W62 was an OPTION. The W62 cars got solid grille panels. I’ve owned three non-W62 84s and guess what; they had grilles.
I have a 2001 cobra with stage 2 comp cams, intake, and full exhaust. She runs great except when I pull up to a red light and come to a full stop the engine fails to catch idle and the revs drop. Usually the revs fall to about 400 and then it recovers idle at 850. It starts up fine but when I rev the car from idle it always dies. The IAC and IAC wiring harness have all been replaced and the issue is unresolved. No one seems to know how to address the issue. Does this fix work with new edge cars as well? I've been having this issue for years and am dying to have a normal idle. Thanks man.
No. Only A9L and A9P cars.
Will this fix it running rich at idle? I installed a trick flow stage 1 cam and it runs and idles great just the richness at idle ive checked fuel pressure, adjusted tps, it was fine before I did the cam i dont get if.
Any aftermarket cam is going to smell fat at idle. The EEC is going to keep the A/F stoich, but the “richness” at idle is cause by the overlap of the cam.
You put a mark on "this" and then put another mark on "this" a 1/2 inch back and then tighten "this" so it lines up? Which "this" is "this" and which "this" is that? Thanks.
If you don’t understand and can’t figure it out, leave the box alone. This video was intended for those that have the ability to follow simple verbal instructions.
I know this is a older video but I had to let you know. I couldn't have said it any better. Really appreciate your cfi videos, they probably have saved a few from being hacked to pieces.
I asked Copilot for the answer on the orientation of the zerk, and the description was unclear...horizontal...compression. It took me to this video with a great explanation. Thanks!
I've been doing it wrong for 40 years lol
Yep, more than likely.
Hi, could you possibly send me the wiring harness diagram? I would love to do this to my 83 crossfire. If there is an email I can reach you at that is better please let me know. I really appreciate it! I want to keep my crossfire set up.

I have a Saginaw 605 gear box and have trouble with the jamb nut - it looks different than the one in the video. My gear box has the ring retained cover on it. Any ideas?
Thank you for this information. I have a 93 Hatchback with a 331 trackheat heads and intake with a Comp Cams 276H-R14 cam. This procedure worked very well for the most part. Once the car is up to temp and it is shut off, it will not idle. It has a giant surge or two and stalls. It does seem easier to catch it with the throttle now. It is idling at around 850 rpm. If you have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Larry W.
GREAT video!
Gunna try it tomorrow... this may be the silver bullet
I used this method to adjust the idle on my 94 F-150 (same cam, but stock heads and intake) and at initial startup it runs fantastic, but now as soon as the speedometer senses movement the idle shoots up to 1,700 rpm...any ideas?
Do you need an alignment after this? My truck now pulls to the right a lot more than it did. The adjustment did fix about 80% of the looseness in the steering wheel at center from left to right.
You shouldn’t need one
@@Joesmusclecargarage Whats the issue then? any ideas?
@chriss4365 I have no idea what you did. Removing slop from a box does not change the location of the pitman arm in relation to the drag link, tie rods, and spindles. Did you remove too much slop and the box is binding?
@Joesmusclecargarage I adjusted about half a turn. The steering is fine no issues.
I think if you got a Pontiac fiero and did some changes to have it run better, explain some common issues and made some content with it, that would be awesome and great to see
Why would I bother messing with a Fiero? I don’t like Fieros, and I have no interest in owning one, let alone working on one. Do people even mess with Fieros anymore? But in response; the Fiero came from the factory with either a 2.5 Iron Duke, or a 60 degree 2.8 V6. You can look up any vehicle (Cavalier, Celebrity, etc) that was equipped with either engine, and find what you’re looking for.
Mine is close, it's a 331 stroker trick flow 170 heads stage 1 cam holley upper and lower 75mm throttle body 24lb injectors and mine had Mac shorty headers but I convinced myself it needed more flow so I put bbk 1 - 3/4" longtubes and the sound isn't as good, shorties just sound way better, I'm thinking of putting dumps right at the ends of the mufflers but still keep tail pipes in place
So just to clarify, start car up get it to operating temp, pull iac and the spout connector set rpm turn car off reconnect everything and done? Then restart car
Pull the IAC and SPOUT before you fire it up. Set the idle, shut it off, then reconnect the IAC and SPOUT
So at the end of this I did the base idle reset and now its all good
Thanks alot been having idle issues for awhile now never could find out why and what was going on till I watched your video
Thanks for the video I just went through a mess trying to get my 88 supercharged notch to start. I set the idle at around 750 with the spout and iac unhooked. Shut the car off and plugged them back in and let it run for a bit. It's idling nice and smooth but staying right around 1k RPM. Should I do it again or is the iac off? I do have a 306, b cam, paxton supercharger not sure about the heads. Has a maf conversion too.
A B cam might like to idle at 1000, depending on the heads, compression, idle vacuum, etc. My TFS1 idled at around 900-950. Any lower and it would surge with the air on.
@@Joesmusclecargarage that makes sense. That's about where it idled when I bought it. I only drove it a few times then started fixing everything wrong with the car. It just wouldn't start last week so I ended up deleting the msd 6 al box, msd distributor and coil and just putting a new distributor in it. I think it was built 20 plus years ago and been sitting a long time. Thanks again 👍
No help at all
Too stupid to understand simple verbal instructions huh? That’s ok. You’re better off keeping your little hands clean and leaving it to someone with a double digit IQ.
Thanks man, will this work for a 2019 2500HD RWD
Just one question… are the bearings new or still the originals? As the preload changes a bit if they are new. As far as I know new bearings need a bit of preload vs already broken in bearings only need 0 backlash. This is a very good video thanks for doing it 👊
The bearings are the original bearings. It’s not a rebuild video. I understand bearings “wear in” and tolerances can increase .002-.003”. The bearings are not the cause of the excessive slop in a box. If the bearings are shot, the box needs to be gone through and adjusting it won’t fix it.
Thanks for teaching us about the subtle differences between years. Could you make a comment regarding interior colors and how the different panels were matched from factory? (ex. bottom piece of door panel matched carpet) and so on. Thanks
Ok did that and all be dipped 98 % better still hick up every once and awhile but way way way better thanks a million
