Toor Merchant: First Look
Today we talk about my semi fresh reactions to the brand new Toor Merchant folding knife! (crowd cheers)
* in editing this, I realized how much I undersold the pricing problem. A S35VN Titanium handled pocket knife is far from a rare thing in today's market. Thanks to the work of Kizer, Bestech and others, $250 for a knife of this quality and makeup feels way overblown. Toor is an aggressively american company, so they would likely respond "that's the price of american craftsmanship" except that Zero Tolerance ALSO has similar knives listed for ~$100 less. The truth is that you are paying to support your friends first folding knife. There are some OBVIOUS and foundational misses in this design. They also got some stuff right that frame lock manufacturers often miss, like a proper cut out for lockbar access that I forgot to include in this version of the video. My point is that it is important to look thru the hype of a thing to see what it actually brings to the table. What was done in the execution of this knife was done well. The problem is that the design wasn't finished and the price balloons because it can. Toor put their foot into the game and it seems to be going fine, but they NEED to do better than this for their next swing.

Today we continue our series of discontinued tools that I won't miss. This one seems to have been an attempt at a more hardcore multitool option for the more hardcore individuals among us, but how did it do towards that aim?
I Got My Friend Back!

A good life is full of experimentation. You know nothing of yourself or your world without trying to play with it and push boundaries. Same thing with knife preferences, keep modding and trying weird things. Maybe you'll find something you like better than what you had before.

This week we look back at what was my VERY FAVORITE multitool of all time! until I carried it for a short time and realised that we simply wouldn't be friends. Also, I have an Instagram now? Keep forgetting to plug that... I FINALLY FOUND ONE!

I have legitimately been looking for one of these for years. I have never seen one on ebay or anywhere else. But just the other day... there it was. Bathed in heavenly light... Waiting to be taken home, and disappoint me.

Today, we discuss an old dinner pal and weep over its unfortunate and unforeseen demise. Real talk, I had no idea this had been discontinued and I'm definitely not happy about it. This was one of Kershaw's best models.

Dude very entertaining. I bought this POS from Home Depot just as a beater. I agree crapola.
Thanks a bunch! I didn't even know what this knife was called
this the same as the 3? wanted to remove the safety on mine
There are shims to offset the blade from the frame... those round features near the blade pivot are called upsets and serve the same function
What’s the best sharpener you can recommend for this knife?
helped me out, thanks for the deets!
It's funny because i love my leatherman surge but i will use my leatherman super tool more
This was exactly what I was looking for! So glad you made/shared this video. Thank you.
Thanks. Was starting to get really pissed off!
⚔
Glad you posted the video, bought in an auction, might make it a edc, at least in the bag.
I’ve had mine for a few weeks now and the detent is definitely heavy. Hoping it loosens over time.
The SOG Flash II is designed much better. Heres a tip. I normally use vaseline to lubricate knives. It also works great to hold things like that little ball in place during reassembly.
Thanks for the video. Still helpful in 2024 😊.
bought mine over a year ago as a souvenir to the USA. Been my EDC knife since then and it's still going strong. I carry it almost every day. Because I have a little daughter and she likes to take things out of my pocket, I find the safety very useful 😅. Only 2 problems I have is that I lost the screw holding the pivot pin in and the pocket clip damaged my steering wheel a bit because it scratched against it when stepping in the car. This last problem was solved by putting some shrink tube around it.
I have the older one and I wanted to open it and maintenance it how do I open it? If you don’t mind me asking and if I do take it apart, and I put it back together will it be as sturdy as it was before I tempered with
Thanks a lot! I just got one and thought weird it came with it stowed away and now is it locked in place forever? That can't be right...😆
I did knife surgery on my Redoubt the other day and my 551-S30V Griptilian this morning. Now both work perfectly. Couldn't get any smoother and zero blade play or lock rock. I feel good after having done both. Now I'm thinking of doing the same to my Mini-Grip. I think I should because that was the very first Benchmade I ever bought and I haven't taken it apart yet. Probably quite dirty inside.
This video is a waste of time. “Dave” doesn’t have a clue how to work on a knife which has excellent design and wonderful knife steel. I’ve used these knives for 15 years and love them.
The seat belt/cord cutter doubles as a bottle opener too.
Thanks man, this video really helped me to reassemble my knife. It's not the same model or brand, but it's the same concept. I was fixing my Maddox Tanto, and I couldn't figure out why my knife wasn't springing open after I reassembled it. Turns out, I didn't even realize that it had a spring in it and accidentally left it out when I put it back together. Your video really made reassembling my knife easier AND allowed me to realize that I was missing the spring. Thanks man. P.S - It really is easier to reassemble knives like these with an extra set of hands.
I got a used one for 4 bucks, this video helped a lot, terrible knife design, thanks a lot for the video, this is the knife one collects as a sample of a crappy design.
It was helpful to me. Theflipper quite working so I took it apart. It flew everywhere including into s pile of my kids Lego tool box where I pitched a list up that diesn't being and just the spring and one peice which I'm looking now. I allmost went ffffff ing mag trying to figure out why I couldn't put it together. Your the only video detailing it. So yeah. You saved a man's sanity today and I thank you for it brother. Ps your right, junk. Though I'll say the steel itself and to be of decent quality if they had went a bit further with it they may have had something ok. Peace
When I’m considering buying a knife, I always check TH-cam for videos about the knife - especially disassembly videos. I like to see what makes them tick. Thank you, sir, for your excellent Finn Wolf video.
Citizen Promaster Tough. Great watch! I have the same.
hey the switch on my boker knife is made out of metal, not plastic
"Have to push it so far into a hole that big" lol that's what she said. But in all seriousness, I just bought a fake one online. It's a really nice knife. May not be the same quality as a Benchmade, but it works fine for me. 200 bucks for this thing is crazy!! However, it's a nice knife I just ain't paying that for something I'm gonna carry and use, but the design of this model is really nice. Small little dagger style blade automatic, wonderful. May only have one sharp side, but if you have to stick someone with it, it's not gonna matter.
Yes! You have my undying gratitude!
Thank you so much!! I bought 4 of these for my groomsmen at my wedding. Mine was the only one with a carabiner that locked as soon as you opened it so we all thought it was broken. It's funny though, as soon as you said it locks, and I realized it was a feature, not a mechanical failure, I intuitively knew how to close it
My favorite knife
Hanging head in shame… 😐…I’m an idiot (putting the dremel away)
@DaveLikesKnives Hey Dave, got a good one for you. I got a SOG Pentagon Elite 2 and after it was dissasembled seem to have lost a spring to keep tension on the lock mechanism. Can't find a video on it anywhere. If you can do a video on it you're the GOAT. Thanks
Oh yeah, by the way, it's illegal. In New York anyway. New York State. Way up in this bum f***
Thanks for the video, i removed the lock because of it.
Won’t the twitch spring open at random without the safety? I’ve heard stories of the knife opening in the pocket without the safety on. If you’ve removed the spring, how does it perform without it? Been thinking about removing the spring.
That shaving was actually the safetly lock spring.
meanwhile me attempting to unscrew the very first screw you unscrewed... it turns infinitely, tried to black it from the other side to prevent it, no luck there lol
Those are silly skinny locking gates. Smh 150 bucks for that
SOG was kind enough to red loc tight my pivot and used screws made out of candy. Judging by easily j can feel them wanting to strip out. Go sog.
Thank you for the review; it was very helpful. 👍
This knife is slick
Please start using graphite lube in your knives fellas. It does not attract dirt, and will not rinse out with water. Only 100% alcohol.
only multi tool with the tools on the INSIDE. so ergonomically obsolete.
Awsome video. Have the exact same knife and was abel to follow you every step of taking mine apart, cleaning and reassemble with no problems. Brand new knife again after all the dirt and gunk cleaned out. Thanks.
This was my first "real" knife. I still EDC one fairly often. Ive always realized it ain't the best but I love it.
I did this It leaked from the point of then pen 🤷♂️
Well then maybe a good trout knife. 😋
I have the satin blade version of this knife it is sexy as hell and good in your pocket pocket clip does suck
Its garbage.....and safety will engage all the time. If u ever need it it wont b there
I'm fairly certain the only time the spring is under tension is when you open or close the knife. During normal carry, there's no tension.
Thanks for posting this. I wanted to make sure I was approaching this right. I broke the pocket clip on mine a while back and just got a replacement.
