Classic Mini NLA

เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 ก.พ. 2021
Welcome to Classic Mini NLA, thanks for visiting!
I'm an active member of many classic Mini groups and forums and although I would never classify myself as an expert (every day is a school day with a classic Mini :)) I do get asked 'how to do' things quite a bit.
Mid-2021 I setup a Facebook page of the same name @ClassicMiniNLA with the aim of providing a permanent place where info can be found and where folks can find rare or no longer available (NLA) parts, mostly related to SPi Mini's because that is what I know most. This is not my job, it's just a hobby!
I do my best to explain and help but sometimes you just need a video to explain. So, this channel will, overtime, do that as I create videos for things...
I also play with my own classic SPi Mini, a red Rover Cooper 35th Anniversary Edition (LE), so from time to time I'll add vids of that too.
Thanks for ending up here. If you like what you see, do like the vid and feel free to subscribe.
Thanks!

**New** Rover Mini SPi TBi Throttle body to air filter housing seal PHN10011
This is a short video about a new and previously NLA (No Longer Available), SPi part for classic Mini's and other Rover SPi/TBi models.
Rover Mini SPi TBi Throttle body to air filter housing seal
Part number: PHN10011
The Rover made replacement part (orange one in the video) has been out of stock and NLA for a couple of years now. This seal was a service part and made sure all the air entering the throttle body goes through the air filter, keeping nasty stuff from entering the engine. The black seal in the photo is the new Japanese made replacement seal and has been designed & tested to deliver the same function as the OEM part. Once installed it will once again allow SPi owners to seal up their throttle body and make sure all the air drawn into the engine is clean.
This seal is also a 100% replacement for any other Rover SPi (TBi) engines; Metro/100, 200, 400 and 800.
Thanks for reading and watching!

August 5th 2023, 64.8hp The journey and experiments continue. I’ve removed DHR-CCVS system from Garage Doghouse Japan as that was easy to reverse. I have kept their VTE system as I didn’t want to disturb the manifold again. I’m still dabbling/messing around with what I can do to improve flow (and therefore torque) on the intake/inlet side. I added a handmade cast aluminum spacer which at 15mm h...

My pipe rusted out just like in the video, I understands they run coolant through to regulate intake temperature for better fuel air mixture, is it really necessary? Can I bypass em? I’m in a warmer climate country.
What’s the best way to get a hold of you to get those deals?
You can find me here...facebook.com/ClassicMiniNLA :)
So are these fog lights lenses plastic or glass?
They are glass
Adored it!!!! Hubby & I did laugh and chill from the on slog of restoring an '87 Mazda 626GT Turbo. When she gets running, she might beat the mini & Mustang? Not the Super cars!
Great to hear that you're restoring your Mazda! That will be cracking once its done and I'm sure it'll give the Cooper a run for its money, maybe not on the bends though :)
@@classicmininla Check your link on what you posted. Looking forward to seeing you fix fog lights.
spent way too long looking for a video that explained how to take these off/put on, THANKS!

Great video and very informative. I have a spi mini and im trying to find clips for the air box and the seal that goes between the throttle body and the air box. I have spent many hours trying to find these but haven't had any luck. You wouldn't know where I could purchase these from would you. Many thanks Shaun
Thank you. The seal is NLA (no longer available) new and if one does come up they're pretty crazy money. My advice is to make your own from a bit of rubber sheet. The air box clips were never sold separately as far as I am aware so the next best thing is is be on the look out for a 2nd hand airbox which has some clips, enough to replace your missing ones.
Thanks for the video, I don’t actually need to de-mist my fogs lamps yet but your video helped me understand how to change my bulbs. Thank you!
Glad I could help :)
Hello, which product do you use? Thanks
I use STP Heavy Duty brake cleaner but I have heard folks use things like methylated spirit.
Nice bag.
Hi, just wondering if you could advise me on where to purchase replacement parts to recondition my throttle body. Thanks in advance :)
Hi there - I don't know of anyone / anywhere which sells the replacement parts for the throttle body. I've never seen them for sale. The only time I have seen a throttle body which has needed real attention is when it's been abused, stuff bent etc. in which case your only option is to get another 2nd TB and either use that or swap the parts over.
Hi. Fantastic video and explanation, like all your videos. Please, could you explain where the green Air Temperature Sensor must be connected when you close together the airfilter box and the thorttle body ?... there is maybe a connection plug anywhere ? is it connected to the ECU, I imagine ? ... I don't find it in my car
The green Air Temperature Sensor connects to the appropriate connector on the engine bay loom. That part of the loom and the connector gets a lot of hard wear because of the heat it has to endure so it is a common failure point, rather than the sensor itself. On the factory loom the connector is also green but if someone has repaired it, it may now be black. The short bit of loom comes out of the main loom around the back of the clutch cylinder, yours may have dropped down out of sight ?
Thank you for this video! I've been looking into these bags, and was wondering how easy they were to fit, and what they would look like exactly. Absolutely in love with stuff like this, will be messaging them soon.
They are a lovely addition to a mini, and improve the practicality too...a win win :)
What company did you buy the intake manifold from
The inlet manifold is an original Rover inlet manifold which I refurbished myself. I used to do them for other people but I stopped doing it a few years back.
Hi I have a mini part that I am trying to identify which model it comes from I was wondering if you have an email I could send a picture to to see what you think if that’s okay?
sure classicmininla@gmail.com
As a reminder this is the base engine spec you see in the video, read the description of the video for what I added/changed ahead of this power run:- • Standard 1275cc Rover Cooper SPi engine. • Refurbished standard Cooper head, work done by The Car Kitchen. • MED 1.3 Roller tip Rocker set, replaced because the standard Rover ones were worn. • K&N air filter, in standard air filter box • Specialist Components stainless steel LCB • Lambda sensor is positioned in the y-piece of the LCB. • All engine block coolant waterways substantially cleaned up to ensure best cooling. • Standard radiator, silicon hoses, new thermostat. • All vacuum and breathing pipes replaced, cleaned up and/or refurbished. • New distributor cap and rotor. • New water temperature sensor/sender & air temperature sensor. • BPR6ES spark plugs and Luminition HT leads.
Amazing content! I always find amazing how the Japanese became crazy-obsessed with the Mini in the late-80's
Thanks! Yes, they pretty much kept the Mini alive in the 90's. Far more Mini's were sold in Japan than the UK. I have a Japanese Mini so I got hooked into them being hooked into the Mini :) There's far more maintenance and support for them in Japan, so many very good specialist garages.
@@classicmininla Going to Japan to the Japan Mini Day and visit the many shops available is the dream trip and a JDM Rover Mini with A/C is the ultimate Mini for Brazil.
@@petrolheadfrombr Indeed that would be a very decent trip...one for the bucket list :)
Thank you for this four-part series. I recently became the owner of a Mini with SPi and was not familiair with its concept. These videos have clarified a lot. Question: is the throttle cable directly connected to the butterfly valve? If so, that would surprise me. In later fuel injection systems is the throttle pedal connected to the ECU. The ECU then controls the stepper motor, thus controlling the butterfly valve.
The throttle cable is connected to the butterfly via a cam and some linkages, yes but the stepper motor, which is controlled by the ECU also acts on the same linkage, so both affect the butterfly. The MEMS SPi system is essentially an electronic carb.
@@classicmininla I guess what confuses me is that the butterfly has two inputs: the cable and the stepper motor. What if both give a different signal? For example when the ECU thinks that the car should be at idle while at the same time the driver presses the throttle pedal? The cable tries to open the valve where the motor tries to keep the valve (almost) closed.
@@windmill1965 The stepper motor only drives a pin back and forth that pushes against the linkage, it is not attached to the linkage so if the human wants more throttle it can get that without fighting the ECU. It's not a computer controller throttle, it just manages it, when it can.
@@classicmininla Thank you for this further clarification. It is very helpful.
This video was not made by Rover Japan as promotional material. This package was made by a Japanese motoring magazine, in English called LeVolant (this name is written in Japanese on the book and video cover). This video was Volume 4 in a series about specific car models.
Thanks for the info, I'll update the text for the video. Hard for a non-Japanese speaker to work out what is what.
@@classicmininla Indeed, hard to tell. However, this does not make the video less collectible: it is still a special video. When searching online I saw that similar videos are being put up at auction sites. You also mentioned in your video that the English interviews were overdubbed. This is common practice in Japan, even today. They don't subtitle foreign languages but overdub the voices.

Those do look quite good. I bought some expensive tail/brake bulbs from Moss Mini and ended up returning them. The normal tail lights were so bright, that the brake lights weren't enough of a difference - yours look like a much clearer difference.
Yes, these ones are great. The come from Classic Car LEDs. www.classiccarleds.co.uk/
Hadn't even occurred to me that you could do this job without draining the system! I never had a problem with them in the 90s when i had new Minis with this valve (1989 & 1995 cars) but since coming back to the Classic Mini scene, they've gone wrong constantly, just like you said. Not surprised someone in Japan decided to build a quality version. Were there any instructions with it? I'm wondering what the extra holes in the bracket are for .... ?
Yes unfortunately it seems the quality of the remanufactured original style ones isn't great. No instructions with the Japanese version, just had to figure it out. I would think that its a part which is used across a number of models in Japan hence the holes so it can be fitted in those models.
Hi, Do you have pictures of the indicators? I'm looking for a pair, but want to make sure they fit. Are they Fiat 500 indicators? Cheers
If you go to my Facebook page "Classic Mini NLA: Rare & Alternative parts" you will be able to find them in the shop there, inc. photos. To my knowledge they are not the same as Fiat 500 side indicators.
Alright Pal, I don't use Facebook. Do you sell these? Cheers R
@@rondon73 I do, drop me a line on classicmininla@gmail.com and we can go from there. thx
Not bad for nearly standard. That is VERY healthy motor you got there. The head is really where the power is being held back. Lightening would of course help. The flywheel wold be a great place to start. I fitted an MED lightened flywheel to my SPi and they produce a wonderful product. Going any further with lightening (and balancing) would require a lot of time, money, and the motor out. At that point, you would be better off going all in. Higher compression, reflowed head with bigger valves, cam, and away you go. 85bhp is about as much as one can expect from these, due to the ECU. Looking for more will mean either tricking the ECU or going with a reprogrammable unit. One other thing to consider is the final drive. These SPi cars have what some consider the best, overall final drives for all situation but swapping to a 3.44 would really wake up the acceleration...but would add to the overall cruising RPMs. Its all a question of compromises:-)
Thanks (and sorry for the slow reply)! I have stage 3 head which TCK (The Car Kitchen) has made for me using the correct SPi head casting, so visually you would never know it was fettled in any way however I haven't found the time to put it on yet. One day! ...and although most people seem to top out at 85-90hp with the ECU restrictions, I know one person running a 100hp+ SPi, using the Rover ECU, no trickery...
These are really a wonderful video series. Well shot, lit well, informative, and clear. There is not enough doing it to this standard. Thank you!
thank you!
Where do you connect that little red one to feom the inlet to where?
If you mean the red vacuum pipe, that connects to the underside of the air filter housing if you have an original air filter housing setup. If you have an aftermarket system then the red vacuum pipe is not needed but you do need to block it up so no vacuum leak occurs.
Would LOVE to see a video on cleaning the injector. My 94 has around 66k on the clock and I'd imagine could use a good going over.
I'll do that one day...I have a big list of videos I should do...
This is one of those things that has bothered me for years...and yet I never gave it much thought about actually sorting. THANK YOU!! What a difference it makes. I have a 94 Monte...so there are 4 of them. Well worth the time. They look like new!
Excellent to hear!
Hello everyone, I've been following the cabal on you tube for about 2 years now, 4 years ago I had a problem with my 93 mini spi, it doesn't go above 2500 revolutions at any speed, I've changed everything.. vacuum tubes, fuel trap, checked control unit, changed delco, rotor, spark plugs, spark plug cables, crankshaft sensor etc..., could you help me? No mechanic here in Majorca (Spain) can find the problem, I'm even thinking about passing it to a carburetor in the future. Thanks in advance !!
Thank you for your video and sharing your experience with us professional work. 1998 rover mini spi. Rpm high 1100-1400 how to reduce it.
You need to get your Mini connected to a diagnostic tool so you can see if there are any faults and what reading are being shown. Without doing that there could be very many different reasons and trying to fix it 'in the dark' will take time and be costly.
@@classicmininla Thank you
Is it the moving metal part that rusts and becomes more and more stiff to operate or is the actual valve itself that fails? Would applying grease to the pivot and surrounding area prevent this from happening? Either way thanks for producing this video which gives us a good look at a great alternative.
Thanks for watching it! Difficult to say but i suspect it fails in the water way. It won’t harm to lube the pivot but I think it’s some sort of flaw in the valve tolerances that causes them to fail rather than the pivot failing.
Forgot to add, that KAD twin cam sounds incredible!
Thank you for uploading this! Fascinating to see the little book. It seems to me that the Japanese Rover concession really understood the Mini and what the car meant to people in a much better and less superficial way than the Rover U.K. marketing efforts in the nineties which seemed to focus on the brand in terms of style over substance (obviously prepping the way for the BMW MINI) for the U.K. market, in the nineties you were offered Mini branded pens, Filofaxes, clothing etc whereas in Japan it appears you were offered much more useful accessories from the dealer.
Glad you appreciated it! Yes, Rover Japan made a number of promotional kits in the late 80's and throughout the 90's which seemed to go the extra mile over what the UK team was doing at the same time. TBH in the 90's Japan was the biggest market for Mini's, kind of hard for some folks to get their head round that but most of the Mini's made in that era went to Japan, that's where Rover made its money. The Japanese people REALLY love and get the Mini, even today.
My UK SPi Cooper just has a couple of spot lamps which fortunately don't seem to be too badly fogged so I haven't bothered to attempt to clean them internally. However they do tend to fog up in certain weather conditions but I'm not sure what can be done about that because they are in no way sealed and there is nothing to prevent moist air from entering in cold weather. Perhaps cleaning would help?
Seems a bit odd that the water gets in them that much. Might be worth taking them apart to check. Maybe someone has installed them with the drain hole at the top?
@@classicmininla Drain hole is at the bottom. This problem only occurs in cold damp weather when the car has been outside. They always clear overnight in the garage and it doesn't happen in the summer even on a wet day. Not much of an issue really.
Great vid mate! You have muchos patience!! 👍🏻😉
Thank you!
Pls explain how to clean injector and other parts
I plan to at some point
Great-looking product, has it held up through the summer heat? I never fully trust those adhesive pads beyond a few weeks of service. I'd personally be tempted to drill some holes in each corner of the boot , add some rivnuts and bolt the boot bag in for extra support. Good video though 👍
Thanks! The adhesive is fine so far. Not a fan of drilling holes in the car where there weren’t any originally…if it does fail I’ll just refresh it
@@classicmininla I've always thought that inside the boot lid was a wasted space. The jack and wheel changing tools could be accomodated here with an appropriately moulded insert. It could be attached to the boot door interior with the type of fittings that secure the door cards to the passenger and driver's doors.
Good tip. Surprised engine bay heat doesn’t have the same effect!
Thanks! Although it gets pretty toasty in the engine bay the surface temp of the air filter housing never gets to melting point…thankfully 🙂

Fortunately my original Rover-fitted valve was still working and not leaking. So, I just cleaned it, repainted the metal bits and avoided the frustration of a new Mini Spares part. If mine fails I will give your Japanese version a try.
Yes, the original Rover / factory fitted valves do seem to last a lot longer! Cherrish it and hopefully you won't ever need the Japanese designed one.
