192: The Soul of Wealth, with Daniel Crosby
Dr. Daniel Crosby is a psychologist, behavioural finance expert, and New York Times bestselling
author, who joins me to discuss his latest book, The Soul of Wealth.
Dr. Crosby, known for his groundbreaking insights into how psychological factors influence financial
decisions, shares how his book explores the balance between monetary wealth and what he calls
"soulful wealth"-the richness found in relationships, health, and personal fulfilment.
With 50 short, actionable essays, The Soul of Wealth serves as a practical guide for those looking to rethink their relationship with money and align their finances with what truly matters in life.
During our conversation, Daniel discusses key insights from his previous books, showing how
behavioural finance helps retirees make smarter, goal-driven decisions. We explore how emotions
can undermine financial success and how understanding our behaviour leads to better choices in
retirement planning. From mastering delayed gratification to spending in ways that boost happiness, Daniel shares practical advice for redefining wealth beyond just pounds and pence.

    Guys, you have missed it. The purpose of this life is to prepare for eternity and decide where you would like to spend it. To quote the old one 'For best results read the maker's instructions'. I mean of course The Bible. Death of the body can come in a moment, I know, having now reached the age of 70 but previously faced two close out of the blue calls once at 21 and again at 36. There is an old expression from the Middle Ages ' You don't know how to live well until you know how to die well.

    To have a 50/50 chance of winning anything you need to hold about £25000 of bonds. There are better investments available, like gold.

    • @TheRetirementCafe
      @TheRetirementCafe 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Premium Bonds are not an investment. They do not suffer from volatility; you are loaning your money to the National Savings for an unknown return. Capital is guaranteed as long as the UK government can still back deposits. Inflation can erode the capital value. Any returns are tax-free. You are comparing two very different choices for your capital. They are not similar or related.

      Yes, best put into the pension from source (your employer) if they are obliging. Otherwise, you can put £30k of your post tax money and get back the tax above 20% in cash from HMRC (need to do a tax return) and the 20% into your pension. However, inputted from source may help to avoid the 2% NI and the hassle of doing a tax return (if you already don't) plus avoid the delay in receiving the reimbursement from HMRC.

    What has really pissed me off is that I worked, from the age of 16 years old, for 44 years. But because I retired at the age of 60, I do not recieve the full amount of state pension - due to the new rules...!!!. Also, my date of birth was in the June of 2016, which meant my retirement age fell after the April 2016 date, so I am screwed either way. The rules don't allow any consideration for someone who has worked all of his life, but someone who has never worked gets everything; even a free care home place should they need it, whereas I will have to pay for my own. But who said "life ain't fair"...???

    The state and basic pension is not a benefit

    • @TheRetirementCafe
      @TheRetirementCafe 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      State Pension entitlement is based on having paid into the National Insurance scheme for a required number of years. However, the use of the word “benefit” for retirement pension (latterly known as State Pension) has always been classified in law from the time of the 1946 National Insurance Act, which applied from the inception of the National Insurance scheme. No offence is intended by the use of this term. Furthermore, the term “contributory benefit”, forms the legislative framework of the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992. Section 20 of that Act is entitled “Descriptions of contributory benefits”. Contributory benefits under Part II of that Act are listed, and the sixth is retirement pensions. In addition, the introduction of the new State Pension from 6 April 2016 is also classified as a “benefit” under Section 1(1) of the Pensions Act 2014.

    I actually benefitted greatly from this. Sadly my wife died in May 2001, I was 45 with 2 small children. As my wife died before a certain date and I was 45 it transpired at 66 I got a 100% of her SERPs as an added pension. Another hoop was I had too be over a certain age when my children ended full time education. The widowers pension I got til then ended and it became the added pension I got at 66. Worth about £5,500 at current value. I have say it was useless trying to get any detailed information about this over the years- just told it would be calculated when I retired. It’s all swept away now and widows and widowers have been hung out to dry by the Tories. Don’t expect Labour to make it right.

    i have a trading 212 Invest account and an ISA account. i have maxed out my 20K for the ISA account for this year. I have some money in my invest account. Can i transfer these into my ISA account in the next fiscal year without incurring CGT? if i sell my positions in the invest account and transfer the funds into my ISA account without withdrawing it to my bank and then depositing it into my ISA account, can i escape the CGT?

    Obviously since this was made the allowance is much less generous, so this is even more relevent. Whatcabout if you butca very similar but not identical etf. For instance a S&P 500 fund from fund manager XYZ and then bought a S&P 500 fund from fund manager ABC the next day?

      HMRC Guidance: HMRC provides further clarification in the Capital Gains Manual (CG51560), which expands on the meaning of "identical" assets. Although the focus is on shares, the principle applies more generally to financial instruments like units in a fund. The guidance suggests that assets are identical if they are: Shares or units in the same company or fund, They carry the same rights (e.g., voting rights, dividend entitlement). For funds, HMRC would consider two funds as "identical" if they are the same product, issued by the same provider, and offer the same terms. If you'd like to refer to the legislation and guidance directly: Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 (TCGA 1992): Section 104 Section 106A HMRC Capital Gains Manual (CG51560):

    I hope we all know that it doesn't matter who is in the 'top job' because this is a systemic problem -- greed. We have allowed many of our economic sectors, to take advantage of the American people. It's disgusting and frightening for the future of our country. My husband and I will be retiring in the next two years n another country. We are absolutely worried that SS! will no longer be funded. we'll have to rely on his pension, a 403 (b) and a very prolific Investment account with Stephanie Janis Stiefel my FA. Our national debt is bloating and expanding every month. Our government needs to get spending under control and cut the federal budget.
