Eternal Decks - How to Play: Stage D Standard Mode
Eternal Decks is a fully cooperative game where players are trying to complete the stage objectives before any one player cannot take an action. Players start the game with 5 cards in their deck, but will quickly look to acquire more cards from the various Eternals (characters within the game) who each have their own unique 8 card deck.

Great video thank you!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you liked it 😍
man I really want this game - I hope they do a retail release ( I think they will )
@@tinyskeletonman8882 yes, there will be a retail release. In the US, it will be through Portland Game Collective (PGC), in the UK through travel-games.co.uk, and possibly in the works for other EU countries (but nothing confirmed)
In case anyone comes across this later, the pocket edition has the points breakdown on the same card that has the card ranges (back of the score cards). It's not visible in the version used for this comparison video, but it's there. :)
Hey there, thanks so much for watching the video and for pointing that out. Just some background, the points breakdown card was not originally there as shown in my video. But, after I made this video I spoke with Dan from Ninja Star Games and he worked on getting it added. So yay!! I am glad to see it in fact made it in the final version! Thanks again 😁Hope you are enjoying the game!
@@CardsUnbarred So you're the one to thank for it. :) I love the fit of the pocket edition. I wonder if you also helped with ensuring the raised bit inside isn't glued down. It came out cleanly and all the sleeved cards fit perfectly!
@@quixotic134 Ha Dan is the one to thank. He is doing amazing stuff over at Ninja Star! Happy to hear the sleeved cards fit back with no problem now 💪
So if you score in the wreaths section and you have a noise that gets bonus points with an ornament card also in your hand do you get the bonus points that round where it waa wreaths you are scoring and not the noises?
Correct. The bonus points will always score (as long as you meet the bonus requirement on the bonus card) no matter what category you choose to score.
Thank you for the great job! It was very easy to follow. Are you going to create videos for the rest of the stages?
Thank you so much for watching. Glad you enjoyed it. I do plan on created videos for all the stages. I am rather busy with my daily work/life schedule at the moment, so unfortunately I cannot say exactly when that will be. I have Stage D rules and playthrough recorded already, just need to have the time to edit and upload them.
@@CardsUnbarred Looking forward to when it comes online, I really enjoy your videos! Subscribed (and bought into the kickstarter too)
Just shared this again today. Thanks for going to all the trouble!
Thank you so much for sharing it and making it worth the trouble 🥰
There is one thing that confused me. Suppose there's a duet and I lead with a red, and then no one can follow in a 3 player game. How would you score that hand?
Your card would be considered as the highest card in play and there would be no low card. You would score your card face down for 2pts and lead the next trick.
Thank you for this playthrough. I'm pretty tempted by this. Can you explain about the canvas 'board'. Does it crease and need ironing to play on? I thought your solo approach worked very well, btw.
Thank you so much for the kind comment and for watching the video! The board is a thick microfiber cloth. It is pretty sturdy/heavy, which I like. It doesn't move around the table as much as something like Bloodstones that has a silky cloth mat. I have never needed to iron the board. There are some creases that show up from where it was folding when in the box, but after laying it out on the table and smoothing it down with a could hand swipes it lays nice and flat. Plus putting all the cards on top of it during setup helps flattening everything. I think the only parts that tend to have little 'wavy bumps' are the outsides, but still barely noticeable and don't impact ease of gameplay at all. Basically, I haven't seen the board being an issue at all for me. Depending on how sensitive you are to staring at thin creases/bumps, YMMV.
Blown away by this game.
Thanks for the playthrough, it was nice to get a feel for how it plays. I think it was the perfect amount of rambling to show all the thoughts and planning you have when playing the game :)
Awesome! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the feedback.
Great playthrough video. Very helpful. Thank you! I've decided to back this game on Kickstarter.

What a legend
@@DoppelgangerF02 yes, this game is a legend! 😂
Your walkthroughs are so good. What's your favorite player count so far for this game?
You are always way too kind to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! As far as my favorite player count...honestly all of them. I know that is sort of a cop-out, but I really do enjoy the game no matter how many are player. The game presents different advantages/challenges based on the player count, therefore can make it easier/harder at certain times throughout the game. If I really had to pick one, I think I would say four. I think it is the most difficult player count, but also the most rewarding when you do win!
@@CardsUnbarred I'm just grateful you keep putting out more content! Duly noted about the 4 players and all others. Super curious to try it
I am SO excited for this game's release!

@@412arsenal you are too kind! Thanks for watching it and I look forward to more people being able to use their own copy very soon!
Good idea with the quick review for a refresher before a playthrough!
Wow so amazing you made an amazing instructions video for such a hefty game! 😮
Ha! Yeah this is certainly the "largest/most component heavy" game I have covered. But darn if it isn't sooo good!
Hey I just wanted to apologize for my previous comment about the game not being available. That is obviously NOT your fault of course. It’s just my luck that it seems when these cool games pop up they are always out of print or sold out. 😂 I appreciate you going the extra mile and letting me know a good proxy. Also your card teaching videos are by far the best on TH-cam and are VERY much appreciated. Thanks for your work on these videos!
@@craigraley4228 I really appreciate it, but no need to apologize! I totally understand. The indie gaming scene is a tough one to get into when fear of not finding a copy is a real thing! I also want to add some additional context that mighttttt help the sting a little bit. Or at least give more context on why I chose this game (or any others that I cover that are hard to find). I try to only make videos for games that don't already have any videos. I want to highlight and give love to the games that aren't getting any coverage. Because of that they have a stronger possibility of being less known, which in turn, means less available. A couple of my videos have been for widely available games, but for the most part I try to showcase a game that has no media content. Somewhere in that sentiment it also means that I hope my video can drum up enough buzz on the game to cause a reprint or another publisher to pick the game up...but that's pipedream/fantasy stuff 😅 with only 500 subscribers I don't reach that far (not that I'm actually making the videos for that reason. I just do them because they are fun and I like to teach games) Anyway...that's a super long ramble to answer that question! And thank you so so so much for those kind words about my videos! I'm really happy you enjoy them. You are too kind to say they are the best. You seriously made my day! Thank you 😍 P.S. Get ready for my next video to be something you'll be able to grab a copy of very easily....Eternal Decks, which is straight 🔥 I even filmed my first ever playthrough video for it, I think it's that good 😅 Ok, I'm done typing. Sorry for making you read so much!
That makes total sense. And I love discovering these hidden gems. I’m a subscriber now! thanks again for all the great teachings.
The art is so cute and light and it's such a light hearted game. Thank you for such a fun video 😊
It is indeed very cute! Thanks for watching 🥰
FYI you missed one thing: the winner of a trick must choose one of the cards played, (but not their own) and place it on top of any cart in the lane. You taught it that you can pick any card played. It obviously doesn’t matter if all cards played were of the same suit.
Hey thanks for pointing that out. However, the version of the game that was sent to me was a pre-production copy which included a non-final paper copy of the rules. In there it states "The winner of a trick must choose one of the cards _played_..." I just noticed the newer rulebook (which I only found on BGG since I don't have a physical copy of it) that comes with the final version states "The winner of a trick must choose one of the cards played (but not their own)..." So, it looks like that 'but not their own' bit was only added in the final version and not the PPC version I have. So, yeah anyway, thanks again for mentioning it!
This is such a useful video for someone like me. I'm a bit of a tricktaking noob but have got a few of this game type to try, including this one. Thanks for the great explanation.
Thank you so much for watching it! I hope you can get it (and the few others you've got) to the table soon. It certainly seems daunting at first, but once you get the characters down, the rest of the game will just happen naturally! Good luck and have fun!
Awesome
Fantastic vid, thank you!
I've got this one on order, hopefully it'll arrive next week. Looks like a great game with a cute theme. Great video mate, well deserving a thumbs up.
Heck yeah! Hope you enjoy it when you get it to the table. Thanks for watching 🥰
After I watched the video I tried the game with a normal deck of cards and fell in love with this little gem of a game. So chaotic yet interesting as any hand can become a good hand if you manage it well. For the variant, how do you play it on the even rounds? Do you put the tokens in the same order as before or do you shuffle the order?
Right?! The game is so lovely. I wish it was talked about more. I am so glad you tried it out and loved it! Yes, we put the tokens in the same order as before with the variant. However, you could totally shuffle the order again if you wanted. Could be a lot of fun!
Didn't even notice this game come out! It's very aesthetically pleasing! Thank you for the upload!
What makes no sense to me is why four cards are collected every trick. Every trick is worth four points. Never more, never less, correct? So might as score one point per trick. Why collect four? Is there ever a situation where you would collect more or fewer? If winning means having the second most points couldn’t you basically just say the winner is the person who scored the second most tricks?
The short answer: it is explained around 4:32 Longer answer: the winner places a card from the trick on one of the lane piles. This makes that pile have more cards in it which means more points. If there were 5 cards on a single lane pile, the trick winner would collect 8 cards in total (3 from the trick and 5 from the lane) Hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching the video!!
@@CardsUnbarred ahhhh ok ok got it! Makes perfect sense. Thank you for the video and the explanation

Where can we find this game and Vivi?
This is up for pre-order on the New Mill Industries website now. Vivo is going to be harder as you'll need to either import it from Japan or try to find it on a retail importer site, like trickyimports.com or tanukigamesatx.com (if you are in the US)

Finally! I was looking for more information about this game! thanks!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
Great explanation! I think this rule is missing from the video, so mentioning it in case everyone is learning from it: Haggis & Tatties and Haggis & Neeps are only meant to be played with the "scoring variant", where each captured card is worth 1 point.
In the Revolt trick, isn't the Black suit "below" the Red/Blue/Green cards in hierarchy, so it actually loses to a R/B/G card in the Revolt trick? At least, that is what the PGC published rulebook says: "Note: Also keep in mind the Black suit is a "higher" strength and will lose to the Red, Blue, and Green suits during a revolt trick."
Yep, this is explained starting at 33:05 in the video. The Black suit is stronger that R/B/G and in a Revolt trick the weakest card wins. Thanks for watching 😁
Vivo is extremely clever wtf A weird combination of must and must not follow mixed all into one, that's delightful!
It is quite unique in taking rather straightforward trick taking concepts and mashing them together! And putting it all in a cute package to boot!
Oh wow! I reaaaaally like this one! Where did you get it? I can't seem to find it. Same with Sky Towers.

Great rundown! Thanks! Is the quantity of all player's point cards public knowledge during the round, or do you just have to remember who took what?
Thanks for watching it! It's not explicitly stated in the rules, but them being public knowledge is the way I've always played both the original game (Backhander) and this game. Seems silly to me to force hidden trackable information like that in this game. Of course, if you get to try it that way let me know how it goes!
agreed, I figured as much, but wasn't sure. Definitely going to preorder from new mill.
Great video! Thanks for the comparison, Ryan. 😄
Thanks for watching!
Have you ever played Cryptrick with the expansion New Listings? I'm very curious about that...
I have actually. I own it and have played it once. It doesn't actually change that much. I was really looking forward to it, because I don't really like the scoring in the base game and I was told the expansion had plans to fix it. Well it didn't really. It just changed how the cards are collected at the end of the trick--instead of all to the trick winner, they are drafted by players based on where their card was ranked in the trick...very much like Trick & Trade if you have played that before. However, only the highest rank players (number of players is based on player count and difficulty) get cards, not everyone. It also adds more cards so you can play with up to 9 people, but not sure I would ever want to play this game with that many people 😅
Thank you for this video. I got my copy today and holy cow that 30+ page rulebook is intimidating! Watching this immediately relaxed me about teaching this game. There are a ton of things to consider adding the characters on top of the standard rules but it seems much easier now that I’ve watched😅
Thanks so much for watching! Haha yeah I tried to keep the rulebook as short as I could, but there was so much information that needed to be included to make sure nothing was missed! But I am so happy the video has helped you. Good luck with getting it to the table and I hope you have a wildly good time 😁
Great teaching video. Unfortunately I can’t find anywhere within the video that actually tells you how a player wins the game at the end of three rounds outside of just meeting their character’s win condition.
Starting at 19:46 (end of round 1) is where all the win conditions are checked, in order. Additionally, at the end of round 2, starting at 23:57, it's stated again. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching the video 😀
Thank you!
There seems to be an error in the sped-up play of the first round around the 19 minute mark. The fourth trick saw the Berserker winning a trick with the white flag?
The Berserker correctly won that trick. The Resistance played their Revolt Token that trick (the card played right before the Berserker) turning it into the Revolt Trick, which makes the weakest card win the trick, aka the White Flag played by the Berserker.
Just got my copy from PGC, excited to try it for the first time soon!
Woohoo! Good luck and I hope you enjoy it.
