As a writer and theologian, I am passionate about helping to create a more empathetic and inclusive society by writing for social change & advocating for intersectional and accessible education/research. I do that work to the end of harm reduction, healing, and spiritual alignment.
My research centers on the study of Black faith and life/culture. In particular, I focus on the Black church, liberation theologies, theomusicology, and the spiritual & sociohistorical dimensions of hip-hop music/culture.

Hip-Hop and the "Hood Gospel" (feat. Kirk Franklin and Glorilla)
Hip-Hop and the “Hood Gospel” (ft. Kirk Franklin, Glorilla, Papa San, Shabba Ranks, and Biggie Smalls).
Everytime I hear complaints about gospel artists working with hip-hop artists, the Tupac Shakur quote comes to mind (may he rest in power):
"These ghetto kids ain't God's children? And I don't see no missionaries coming through there."
Reflections on Kirk Franklin's origins in hip-hop and his witness to a generation, as well as his recent collaboration with Glorilla...proof that both the "righteous" and the ratchet are a part of the sacred balance that make up humanity 😂
In all seriousness go stream "GLORIOUS" by Glorilla and stop being a hater all your life. Shit hard.

And shoutout to my Jamaican cousins out there 🇯🇲

"Not Like Us" and the Boundaries of Black Culture
มุมมอง 7K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
What if I told you "Not Like Us" was (kinda) about segregation? And about the boundaries of Black culture? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once acknowledged that integrating Black communities might be akin to integrating them into a "burning house." In this video, we dive deep into this concept with insights from historian Manning Marble, who provides a unique perspective on the defacto benefits of ...
Tupac's Hip-Hop Revolution (ft. Nipsey Hussle, Kendrick Lamar)
มุมมอง 1.7K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is Tupac's Hip-Hop Revolution (featuring Nipsey Hussle and Kendrick Lamar). In his song Dedication (which features Kendrick Lamar) Nipsey Hussle calls himself the "Tupac of [his] generation." In Not Like Us, Kendrick Lamar says, "Yeah it's all eyes on me and I'mma send it up to Pac!" Yet and still as hip-hop expands, we're seeing more and more people missing and misunderstanding the politi...
My Hip-Hop Story | @DonnellWrites
มุมมอง 4546 หลายเดือนก่อน
My Story is a Hip-Hop Story: a #Juneteenth reflection on freedom. The fifth element of hip-hop is knowledge. KRS-One says that to be “hip” is to know, and “hop “is movement. It is at its core a conscious movement, a consciousness movement. “Act like you know.” My life since I started writing rhymes at age 9 has been a reflection of this culture, and those that have come before me. Thank you all...
