It's interesting to see John Buscema drawing that flashback from that run on Uncanny X-Men because I could tell that back then that Silvestri was very much influenced by Buscema's style. 😎👍🏻

Buscema clearly still had that Conan energy on his Wolverine work. I will gather Buscema wolvies eventually, just not there yet. Btw nice to see comparison between Silvestri and Buscema. Silvestri is really good at visual storytelling and composition. He was the best out of the image bunch. Amazing review.

Had Heroes Reborn not only been a money grab, there could have been some strong post-Onslaught tales told of the aftermath. This is an example (I had not seen before) and I think years later an Avengers Annual tackles the question - what of the remaining team members?

The final panel in the Gambit/Joseph sequence is indeed the re-designed face of a Phalanx, with it's slanted, almost Symbiote-like multiple eye and the grinning mouth. If I'm not mistaken this is the base form or 'true form' of the Phalanx, rather than the assimilated humans we've seen them as so far with the yellow circuitry somewhat resembling Warlock and the Technarchy.

Anyone else think it hilarious that a Shi'ar Empire navigator uniform comes with a bare midriff? I'm assuming that's standard for females and males, which makes it funnier. I'm really glad you're doing X-Factor. Wow, you have of knowledge on American entertainment. I always thought this was a very sad way to open the comic. Having 2 parents downing their unborn child. Especially black parents, who would know about discrimination. I love Havok and his power. I always wanted him and Polaris to be like Scott and Jean. They're just as powerful(unless Jean has the Phoenix). Great job on the video. I definitely agree,Stryfe is one of the best designs of a big bad. He should've been used more,in other books. Great video, I remember this being the Kingpin's return form the"dead". I always thought it was strange he was coming back in the X-Men book. A solid debut for Carlos Pacheco. I'm sure you covered the 1st book, you don't just jump in the middle of a story. I like that. I have to go back and watch the 1st book.I always loved Sebastian Shaw. As powerful as he is,he prefers to play the hands off too good to fight role. I think Pacheco was wasted on the stories he penciled for his debut. Not the best storylines for such a great artist.

I remember promos for this story (first time I ever heard of Shang-Chi) but this particular issue was the only copy I was able to find at the local grocery store back then. I believe this was also the first of Carlos Pacheco's (I pronounced it Pa-CHEE-O back then...lol) work I purchased. Zero Tolerance was where I slowly started to lose interest in the X-titles (maybe comics overall) but Pacheo's art kept me buying a lot longer than the title alone should've. He ended up being among my favorite post-Joe Mad X-artists along with Salvador Larrocca.

The narration panel that details Kitty covers nine hundred meters in three minutes, after she had already been dodging and running from the N'garai for quite some time prior, highlights the physical condition that an X-Man has to be in to do their job. Even after her initial battle with the demon, she was able to maintain a running pace on par with a marathon athlete. The X-Men are essentially an elite military squad with super powers. Even Kitty, who is critical of the workouts she has to do earlier in the issue, realizes the need for them as she struggles to survive the attack from the N'garai. I like this level of detail, as it highlights the difficulty, and seriousness of the job of being a superhero. It gives a level of depth to the comic book that implies it deals with mature themes, and is not just a child's story as comic book stories are so often assumed to be.

Excellent comment! Claremont was very good at the procedural dimension of superheroics. He really thought out everything in detail.

Great choice for today. I remember picking up the comics in my box when this came out and reading this right in Geppi's😂. Anything with Gladiator on the Cover I'd instantly grab! Merry Christmas Darr!!🎄🎁🕊️ Of course,Kallark had no idea who Tilby was, assuming she's an X-Man adds some comedy to the upcoming plot(I'd rather have seen Sam).

This mini series was a great pick for review. Golden age of Marvel during this period.

The art was very good, but I have to disagree about the storytelling. Gladiator comes to Earth to ask for the X-Men's help, and does so by attacking the first mutant he sees? Then he says it would be dishonorable to send a youth into combat, fully ignoring the fact that Sam was surrounded by children when the fight started. It all just seems indicative of the biggest problem with comics of the 90's: they tended to go for all the style and action of the genre while only putting in the barest effort on storytelling.

You're right, John. There are contradictions between what Gladiator says and does. If I had to come up with a No Prize explanation, I'd say he was disoriented from the trans-galactic teleportation to Earth.

That's a fun fight between Cannonball and Gladiator, but I'm confused about how Sam withstands that punch. It says Gladiator's powers are based on confidence (I'm assuming his confidence), and he seemed pretty confident with that punch. I guess his enemy's confidence can negate that? It's also funny Gladiator spent the entire issue fighting the youth he considered it dishonorable to send out to help the Shi'ar empire. Nitpicks aside, that was a pretty fun issue. Merry Christmas!

Beast explains it on the third last page when he says that Sam figured out how to absorb the kinetic energy of Gladiator's punch into his blast field, and so he's learned a new twist on his mutant power. Yeah, the contradictions in what Gladiator says on the last page are pretty noticeable. Happy Christmas to you too!

@@comicsbazaar4508 Oh, I see. You may have noted that in the video, but I was in the middle of something while listening. Thanks for the explanation!
