Here's a question. I am a 72 year old bloke who passed his motorbike test as a youngster and rode around on a lambretta 150cc until I got married and bought a car. I would really like one of these electric scooters for short trips in my town (especially during the summer months). Does anyone on here know if I would need to get a new licence?

Hi Dave, if you sat a motorbike test you should still have the category on your license. If you check the back of your license and you have category A, A1 or A2 (without any restrictions) then you will be able to ride a motorcycle. It's also worth mentioning, if you passed your driving test before February 2001 you can ride any of our models restricted to 30mph on your car license. If you email hello@niuedinburgh.com we will answer any questions. Also visit our website www.niuedinburgh.com thanks

It depends entirely on your use case. I guess they tweaked it to reduce the wattage as the battery starts to get quite low. For myself and the roads I ride on nearly all the power is usable and you are still getting 2000 watts by the final 10% or so. All the people complaining rode it on the highway at ridiculous speeds.

  • @davidbrown5646

We need a list of places where we can charge our batteries if we go beyond 50%, rather than hoping a café "allows" us to charge our batteries. This would allow me to travel to the coast and back home. I'm about 10 miles short of that.

Never calculate it like that ,it's a nice moped but at 20% it goes into ECO mode ,16% goes into limp mode and if you drain the battery it needs to be taken to a dealership and reset .

👍🏻thanks! The Niu homepage is a nightmare. The model names are even worse. If Niu wants to be successful in Europe, they have to understand the specs that drive us & the much older "new vehicle buyers" compared to China. Also our different driving culture. 90% of Chinese are extremely poor & live in rural areas. The "rich" live in overcrowded "megacities" of vast dimensions. I doubt that "joy-riding to the country side for a nice meal" is a thing in China. Probably neither in USA, Australia etc. The greatest 2-wheeler brands come from Japan & Europe - both overpopulated in a similar way. *Finding specs that matter is equally easy* on Honda & Piaggio & BMW homepages etc. Niu tried to compensate their lack of monetary success with 3 price hikes in 12 months. That strategy will drive them deeper into trouble. Chinese brands have lost tons of attractiveness during the last 12 months. Sunra (one of the largest EV-Scooter producers globally, located in China) has increased prices a little. Niu's top model moved from 3.999 to 5.700 € & caused tons of troubles/ dissatisfaction in the first months of it's market entry 14 months ago. Some sort of battery issue I think. Also, it's just not a good Niu model. I waited 2 years for the model (yeahh, stupid Niu brand names) & walked into into the shop - determined to buy it. Thankfully I did a test drive beforehand. Worst "curve" handling that I ever experienced in a 125 cc. A Vespa from 1960 would have performed better. Anyhow, as you deduced my from my English: I am German. This time I want to give the 80 kmh model a try & can't find ANY relevant info anywhere. *Your video is the first helpful one I found on the upgraded/faster model*. 👍🏻 No 2-wheel magazine or influencer channel in D-A-CH (=the 3 German countries) seems to cover NIU anymore. The up-grade to 50 miles per hour is very significant in our region, since many roads have a 50 mpH speed limit (dare you, if you can't keep up with 50mpH. It's really dangerous to enter those roads with a slower vehicle). I am talking about the daily fight to get to work from close outskirt villages around e.g. Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich. Anyhow. I bought a lot of NIU shares after driving my first NIU, because I was convinced that NIU would change the business. But Niu headquarter is too narrow minded to seek advice & learn & *adapt*. They could simply name their models after famous game changers in electricity & batteries. THOSE I could remember. Or ANYTHING but SENSLESS combinations of letters & numbers. In my town of 500.000 people, the NIU store changed owners & place 3-4x in 18 months. Before that, it had the same owner & location since NIU came to our town (=less than 10 years).

I live in NYC, in a 3rd floor walk up apartment. I would like to see a video, from beginning to end, of someone removing the dual batteries and walking them up stairs and plug them into a wall outlet for charging. Then later, walk them back down and put them back in the scooter. It's this process easy? Difficult? I have no idea.

I did it at the beginning, it is not that difficul, but looks like it is preferable to charge the barreties using the connector inside the scooter in orther to balance at the same time also the auxiliary battery. charging the batteries outside the scooter, apparently, was the cause of my first system failure

I'm using it since July 2022, it is a great scooter when it works but I've been 4 times to the assistance after an abnormal fast discharge. Every time the answer is "the assistance controlled the firmware remotely and everything is ok". @@davidhunternyc1 NIU doesn't talk with customers, just with resellers/official assistance. firmware updates are quite frequently, but I think most of the problems I had are related to improper recharging methods. in my experience every time I had a default I was using the scooter with a residual charge... peraps I never had a deafault using the scoter after a full charge (and balance). real problem is that there is not enoght history to confirm this theory or fix the problem, or using the warranty

On the GT EVO, most of us will stay in “Sport mode” which will probably produce 20-25MI range in a real world scenario…..while a gas 125 🛵 will still be 100+ MPG respectively. 🙂
