Get some chamerops, pindos, yukkas, olives flowering shrubs and formal planting for the boarders.
All part of the plan! Well, apart from the olives.
Both the gingko and the dawn redwood were similarly considered to have been extinct for millions of years till live specimens were discovered in Asia and subsequently spread internationally through horticulture.
Brilliant, isn’t it! Amazing that these species have been rediscovered so recently!
Is it spring 😂
Gotta gö there now 😂
You should!
love them i got good size australis for £38 last week
Nice! I wonder if they’ve got a new wave of stock in
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 i hope so i need more so i'll be paying a visit soon lol
So so boring. You said slightly more exciting than watching paint dry, but no definitely much more painful. Not sure how grey is exotic?? Won't get that 3min of life back!!
Sorry for the delay in replying but I fell asleep halfway through reading your comment! I can’t bear myself to watch it back but I am pretty sure “slightly more exciting than watching paint dry” is an accurate description. Grey in itself isn’t at all exotic but in an exotic style garden I think it looks better than a brown fence. Just my opinion, of course! Sorry for the long reply and I do hope you haven’t died of boredom whilst reading it. If you are ever struggling with insomnia then do consider watching some of my other videos 🤣
I've got a cordyline that's around 4m tall and is doing well, is there any way to encourage new lower branches at say 1-2m or even the base to make it look a little different?
Hi, sounds like an impressive plant! Cordylines often shoot from the bottom or sometimes somewhere up the trunk if the top growing point is damaged. I definitely wouldn’t recommend damaging it so I’m sorry but I don’t have any advice to help! Personally I love the single trunk look
I need to get myself down to B&M!
Hope you find some bargains!
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 Haha! Thanks! :)
That’s a really smart & tidy B&M. Did they know you were coming ?
Haha, no they didn’t. I went in the evening when I knew it’d be quieter, receive less funny looks that way :) perhaps they’d just tidied up although can’t think I’ve ever seen a member of staff in the B&M garden centre
Haha was gonna say where's the 7ft trachycarpus fortunei's 😉had double trunk ones at my local store at £150, absolute belters 🏝🏝
I think I’m a month or two too late! Don’t think I would have bought one but would have been very interested to see one up close. Heard a bit of mixed reviews but pleased you got a good one!
“I don’t know what’s going on in here” made me laugh
Picked up a big yucca for £35 happy days
Pleased to hear it, Harold!
I am doing the gradual bamboo hedge also! nice plans
Thank you, let’s see how it turns out!
Gorgeous tree, I think these are superb and I have been looking at one today here in Devon, England. I don't know if the one I saw had a mixture of male/female cones on it though so I reckon that's an excuse to go back and see it again lol
Thanks. Yes, definitely need to go back for another look! Can’t see any female cones on mine yet. I thought I might have seen some but turned out to just be the new growth which is a much lighter / brighter green than the previous growth
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 Fingers crossed for you, we got lots of sun if that helps atm or in the SW here anyway. I think I read that these trees can either carry just single sex cones or can carry both sexes, I don't know if that is fixed for the life of the tree, some plants can chop and change can't they. I'm no pro but I'm trying to study it mainly for my houseplant collection. Check out Plant World, Torquay, Devon. They don't sell Wollemi seeds yet but they may well do in the future and they have many other rare species on site that they seed and sell.
@@robworrall6832 thanks, yeah I’ll check them out!
Bit bright mate
Hiya mate, just found your channel. I'm north of England too. I really want one of these too and your video is encouraging me. Thanks subbed
Hi, thanks for your comment! I would recommend them, you just need to find one… unfortunately I haven’t seen any for sale for a while. I’m hoping to be able to get some seeds from mine one day
Planting a CIDP in that small space is a continuous maintenance nightmare. It would make more sense to go with one of the smaller Phoenix species
Well, problem solved as unfortunately it died last winter (22-23). No phoenix species is hardy in Lancashire
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 Have you tried P. theoprastii? I have heard that it is as hardy as a Med Fan. Hard to find though
Looks pricey, but impressive selection of plants 😊
Yeah it’s not the cheapest but the plants are good quality and well looked after. However, I walked away with nothing as nothing seemed like a great buy to me
Nice 😎
Your amazing well done Tom 🎉I am admire you ❤
Thank you, Sarah - glad you enjoyed it
Wow the price of those Trachys, shows you how much mark up they make, no doubt same suppliers that supply B&M who still make a profit selling them at £150
I know! I’m not sure how much B&M make on their £150 trachys but whatever they do make takes them about a day to make whereas at Barton grange they might take years to sell
Thank-you for sharing brilliant vlog hope you have a lovely weekend 🙋♀️👋👍👍👍
@@juliepickles3394 no problem, Julie! Thanks and you too!
I suspect the primary supplier of Barton Grange GC is GCP (Garden Centre Plants), a wholesaler located about 10 mins from the garden centre. I know this because I also use GCP as a supplier to buy certain plants for the garden centre I manage. The white labels attached to the specimens are from the nursery, not the garden centre. I instruct my staff to rip them off as soon as the plants arrive as they tend to confuse customers :D I doubt they supply B&M but could be wrong, all of the specimens will be Italian imports anyway. But agree the markup is excessive, almost as bad as Bents.
@@elissa_lana thanks elissa, very interesting - thanks for the info! Do you mind sharing which garden centre you manage?
Really enjoyed your tour. Great to see the good, the healthy and really interested to see the dead stuff also. You have great patience, I admire your dedication to giving palms time to recover. The butia that was mislabelled is a great find. Must be at least 7-8 years old in our northern climate minimum. The blue rimmed labelled plant is interesting, initially I wondered whether it could even be an armata but U think a chaemarops with the armoury. Thanks for the tour. Very interesting👍
Thanks Vincenze! I don’t like to give up on plants, definitely can’t bring myself to get rid of the butia in the big pot. It does have a few live roots at the bottom of the pot so you never know! I hadn’t considered that mystery plant could be an armata - will have to wait and see! Thanks again for your comment, really glad you enjoyed the video
2022 / 2023 was a hard winter. We saw -10 in SW Wales with a drop over a 2 week period. I lost my pink China and T rex. I'm new to a greenhouse this year. So may have more luck.
Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes, a greenhouse should open a few more opportunities for you! I think I’d forgotten how bad the cold spell was in December 2022. Being so early in the winter was tough for the plants too
@palmsexoticsuk2194 it really was a bad winter. I was expecting more loses, thankfully my main wish list items were ok. This winter was hard for other reasons as we were fighting flood water. Maybe next winter will be kind to us all.
@@GardenMyselfHappy I really hope so!
Where do you buy your stuff from?
Hi Harold, a lot has come from friends and a lot has been grown from seed. I don’t like to spend much money!
Solid choice and looks like it will get a nice bit of shade. I would recommend Mahonia sweet winter over soft caress. Although I would always have both :-)
Thanks! I’ll look out for sweet winter then. Especially as the seller of the soft caress only had 2 left! Why is sweet winter your preference?
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 The flowers were a different colour for me - more of an orangey red, so created a nice winter interest. Also the foliage has some nice tones from reds, to oranges to yellows, whereas soft caress has same yellow flowers and stays more green. They are both great in their own right.
@@GrowTropicalMK great - thanks for the info!
Try turning your nozzle round on watering can you'll get a better water
Thanks, I’ll give that a go!
You’ve got lots of pointy plants so I’d pick something with a broad/round leaf. Colocasia perhaps ?
Hi Kate, really good point, sounds daft but I don’t think I’d ever noticed that! Ideally I want something in that spot that looks good all year round but a pink China could be great in-amongst it!
How old is that monkey puzzle tree in the background?
Hi, I planted it about 6 years ago and it was probably 5 years old at that point
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 I have one too. They seem to be growing pretty slowly.
Yes you are right about the weeds they are coming through the flags on the patio thank-you for sharing you have a lovely garden Tom hope to catch you really soon take care Tom 🙋♀️👋👍🤗
Thanks Julie! A small price to pay for nice weather, though, isn’t it!
Need to watch with the trachys & monkey puzzle uv got in there as will get big over time! Managed to get a ground planted phoenix canariensis through its 1st winter with an overhead shelter and some fleece wrapped round it , few brown fronds but pushing new growth now! On the west coast of Scotland so anythings possible lol 😊
That’s impressive, Stephen! I would like to attempt a shelter but in a much less prominent place in the garden to see if it works first. I may end up moving things as the monkey puzzle grows but around 8 years after planting it’s still not too crowded. Very slow growing, for now at least
How about a nice fern a large variety 😊
Hi Wendy, I’d love a dicksonia Antarctica. Lost mine a few years ago and can’t bring myself to pay today’s prices! Would look great in that spot though!
Brahea edulis would look stunning; in a bigger pot like you say
Thanks Terry, could be a job for next weekend!
I nearly killed my brahea edulis when planting in a raised bed. Agree, avoid planting in the ground. Spear-pulled at -5°C. Other two in pots tolerated the cold better. I'd plant a mahonia soft caress there. Great exotic look but tough as old boots,
Thanks Vincenze. Mahonia soft caress is a good shout and I am on the lookout for a few to dot about the garden 😀
👌👌👌👌🫡
Love the bamboo goalposts bent over. Great video tour 👍
Haha, used them to make an extra wide goal to give the kids a chance! Thanks for your kind words
Hi, great video. It's so good to have a walk around garden centres to see what they have because you never know what treasures they may have. You asked about the BBQ stand at the beginning of the video. My hubby purchased one 2years ago from B&Q. What he did was put treated slats of wood on the roof then felted over that. He then put trested slats around the front and sides, plus he put red cedar slats at the back where he put a metal bar to hang his BBQ utensils on. I must say it's really sturdy and going strong. 🪴🌴🌿🌱
Hi Julie, thanks for the info on the bbq stand. Sounds like some nice modifications! I suspect that was a good decision and well worth the effort
really enjoyed this, thank you.
Really glad you liked it. More to come. Thanks for the comment!
Great video, thank you 👍😄 look forward to seeing more 😀
Thanks for your comment. Watch this space 😀
Take care 😂😂😂 i forgot to put care in silly me 😂😂😂🙄🙄🙄🙄

Another lovely vlog tom did they have any nice out side garden ornaments your garden looks lovely ours was a big garden then when we moved into our bungalow it is very small but its big enough now as i can't do it anymore we still haven't put them topiary balls in yet but we will when hubby as some time off but i will let ya no when we do thank-you for sharing hope to see ya soon take hope you have had a lovely weekend 🙋♀️👋🌴🌿🌲
Hi Julie, I completely forgot about the garden ornaments!! Sorry! Will really try to remember next time!
Thank-you Tom 👍 😉😀
Nice video mate. Love to see your garden evolve. Appreciate you showing us garden centres that are more accessible and widespread, but I wouldn’t let that put you off showcasing more bespoke or local centres. Sometimes it’s nice to see some variety from the norm 😎🌴
Thanks James! Good point, maybe I’ll do a mixture of local and national then. Thanks for the comment
Camelia. Pink
Thanks Wendy!
Do you actually know what you’re talking about
Hi Alan, I’ll have to assume that’s a question? If so, the answer is: most of the time, no!
Just subscribed to you as I enjoyed your video at home bargains
Thanks Paul!
The "Bellis"you found is related to Bellis perennis(common daisy)
Thank you! Makes perfect sense as it looks like a daisy but I’m not very knowledgeable about flowers! Thanks again
Wow fantastic to learn more about this tree. Thanks for the video.
No problem, I’m glad you found it interesting!
Make sure any pot you buy for outdoors has holes in the bottom, if not you need to drill a few for drainage. And check any plants you buy are not dry, with nice leaves on.
Hi Arthur, yes, good points! Amazing how quickly some of the plants will dry up especially when the weather warms up. Best to buy plants soon after they arrive! Thanks for your comment
❤great deals..thank you
No problem! Thanks for your comment :)
It’s leaning
It is! I tried staking it a couple of years ago to straighten it but it’s determined to grow at an angle it seems
Great video 💯 thank you 👍
