Lovely conversation with a lovely human. It was especially heart-warming to hear Malphono describe the four thousand year old history of the dispute poem (sogiatha) genre and the particular example of the Cherub and the Thief, a text to which--among many resources he had gathered through decades of research--he pointed me in my research on the reception history of the Good Thief. The Syriac tradition is such a rich treasury of poetic and homiletic interpretation, especially in Ephrem and Jacob of Sarugh.

I laughed at David's dynamic and funny style, and not only did I learn a lot about Gnosticism and Anthony's life, but I also enjoyed imagining David's adventures at his first Conference in Oxford. You, Eric, are an amazing interviewer, calm and, at the same time, creative and quick with your questions. I am very happy that AIEP members, especially young scholars, will have a very useful video. Thank you so much, Prof. Brad Boswel for conducting this interesting interview with Prof. Travis W. Proctor about his last book “Demonic Bodies and the Dark Ecologies of Early Christian Culture.” The subject of demonology has not been researched much among specialists in Patristic Studies, nor has its connection to the ecological question. In this sense, the approach on which this book is based makes it the first comprehensive study of these issues. The two hypotheses put forward throughout the book are very original: on the one hand, that Christian demonological constructs took shape in relation to the various anthropological conceptions circulating in early Christianity, and on the other hand, that ancient demonologies provide us with the opportunity to reflect on how early Christians conceived of their 'dark' ecological connections with malevolent entities, and how these connections related to nature, thus contributing to the formation of Christian cultures. Again, thank you very much for this important contribution to contemporary Patristic Studies!"

Thank you very much, Prof. Phil Booth, for conducting this wonderful and unforgettable interview with Prof. Averil Cameron. Through this video, we have been able to synthesize Prof. Cameron's invaluable contributions to the field of Patristic Studies. It has also allowed us to know aspects of her academic career, which further enhance her figure, as they position her as one of the pioneers in the changes that have taken place in the methodological approaches to research in Patristic Studies during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Fundamentally, these contributions can be summarised in her ability to create bridges between disciplines, showing that it is essential to connect the authors of the patristic era with the world of Late Antiquity in its multiple cultural, political, religious, etc. manifestations. In this sense, her profound reflections on questions of orthodoxy and heresy, as well as on the Mediterranean world in Late Antiquity, the world of Byzantium, Islam, etc., and its relationship with Christianity, to use Prof. Booth's metaphor, open up "new frontiers" of study and understanding for this fascinating period in the history of the West. It is a real honour for the International Association of Patristic Studies to have you here, Prof. Averil Cameron! Thanks again, both of you, for this excellent video.

Thank you very much for this magnificent video. You are both excellent scholars, as well as an example to follow for the new generations engaged in Patristic Studies. It is truly a dialogue between two specialists capable of delving into theology, philosophy and the history of ideas with precision and, at the same time, clarity. Undoubtedly, with the metaphor of the doors, this book leaves many paths open that allow us to reflect on Gregory of Nyssa's central theme of freedom as an ontological constituent of the human being, as well as on the responsibility that this implies, as a theme on which it is necessary to continue to reflect today. Congratulations Francisco and thank you very much, Matthieu, for conducting this interview!

Thank you very much for this fascinating video, which opens up unexpected avenues of research in Patristic Studies. Indeed, this video shows how an expert in Patristic Studies has the research methods to study a culture apparently far removed from Early Christianity, such as the one that exists today in the Cook Islands, but which nevertheless bears similarities with the first Christian communities in terms of the ethical principles on which it is built. In this way, Professor Bronwen Neil's statement that this new project is a natural extension of the various research projects in Patristic Studies in which she participated for many years makes perfect sense. This original video also allows us to understand how cultures that are built on solid ethical principles have a common tradition when it comes to preserving natural resources and living in harmony. A tradition that our contemporary world must remember in order to have a dignified future!

I have only words of thanks to these four distinguished colleagues for highlighting the importance of relational epistemology for the study of Patristics. I too am convinced that it is the only valid way to delve into this fascinating period of Western history. This paradigm, which sometimes seems a contemporary novelty, was widely used by the patristic authors, who understood integrally both the cosmos in its multiple dimensions and, of course, human life in relation to the whole. In this sense, I share Prof. Masperro's dream of disseminating this approach to all those who wish to engage seriously in Patristic Studies. Also, undoubtedly, the understanding of this paradigm will allow us to understand more deeply our contemporary world, because many times epistemology founded on separateness prevents us from grasping the unity of existence, bringing pain to human beings. Once again, thank you very much.

As for your first desire to benefit those who watch your video, I can say that this was the case for me. Indeed, your reflections took me away from the commonplace that only considers the influence of ancient philosophy on early Christianity, which has been the traditional way of teaching and also of understanding this fascinating period of the first centuries of our era. In that sense, thank you very much for allowing me to realise the impact of early Christianity on the history of philosophy, through the philosophical paradigm of the capacity of freedom and choice that every human being possesses. Your lecture has certainly opened up new avenues of research for me. Once again, thank you, Alfons..

Fundamentally, your participation in AIEP was decisive because you broke new ground by showing the need to understand the field of Patristic Studies from a broader perspective, thus valuing the different ways of studying Patristics. Also because you showed and taught, through your own academic life, the need to deepen the plurality of theological and philosophical positions that coexisted during the period in which Patristics developed. After watching this wonderful video several times, I would like to tell its authors that, without a doubt, the research carried out in Louvain since 1425 and up to the present day, fulfills the essence of tradition. Indeed, in this profound tradition of study and research on Augustine, a true model of Patristics Studies is being handed down from generation to generation. I say this bearing in mind that the texts of Augustine, in this case, the Sermons, are studied from an interdisciplinary perspective, with the cooperation of three Faculties: Art, Theology, and Philosophy, a unique case in the world! Not only that, but it uses the research methodology of the history of the reception of these texts throughout history and up to the present day, through the debates and reflections that these works, especially the "Sermons ad Populum", have always produced. An example to follow for university institutions, and for any scholar who wants to seriously delve into Patristics. Thanks to Professors Anthony Dupont, Gert Partoens, Marie Pauliat, and Nicolas De Maeyer!

My thanks also to Prof. Friedrich Wilhelm Horn for participating in this interesting dialogue, through which it has been possible to learn how two great researchers think and work. The dialogue has made clear the need to further deepen the link between the fields of Patristic Studies and New Testament Studies. This video is also a testimony of how research on such a sensitive topic as Christian Ethics can help our contemporary world to understand its past and, from there, to shed light on the present and to envision a better future. Thank you very much, Eric, for your excellent presentation. Your video is undoubtedly very useful for all of us for three main reasons: 1-because you demonstrate that the existence of a diversity of positions in early Christian times is an indisputable fact for contemporary research since there is no doubt that this pluriformity arose from the diversity of interpretations of texts and theological notions, 2-because you clearly explain the general characteristics of the teachings of Gnosticism, and 3-because you share with us the past, present, and future of the magnificent publishing project of the Coptic Nag Hammadi Library of Laval University. I would like to thank you, Anders Christian, for this great lecture. You have raised a central issue for Contemporary Patristic Studies, namely the use of reception theory and reception history. Undoubtedly, they are two essential theoretical and methodological tools that allow us to be aware of what we are doing when we read and interpret a patristic author and how we are doing it. This contemporary hermeneutical awareness opens up exciting debates, such as the objectivity of the meaning of a text, the creation of new meanings, etc. Thank you again for your lecture, as it is a great source of inspiration for all of us who dedicate ourselves to Patristic Studies.

Being Flayed alive Akiba laughed: "Worry not, I have only just realised another meaning for this, that I have said all my life", after which Akiba gave up his life, and that "other Meaning", was lost. Thank you very much, Doru for your excellent contribution to our channel. I have learned a lot about your interdisciplinary perspective of research on the early Christian world and consider it an essential way forward for contemporary Patristic Studies. I share your position on the need to connect anthropology with cosmology, as the patristic authors did, because this separation has had terrible consequences for our modern civilization. You are absolutely right: compartmentalization and overspecialization are our main weaknesses, and only through an anthropic cosmological approach do the new generations have a future. Once again, thank you very much for inaugurating this new section, entitled "Research in Patristic Studies in the 21st century: Challenges, Possibilities and New Methods".

Both through the role of the translator (ἑρμηνεύς), who translated the speeches of the desert fathers into Greek, and through the testimony of St. Jerome, who translated the letters of St. Anthony from Coptic into Greek, the value of Coptic as an indispensable source for contemporary Patristic Studies became clear. Interesting discussion, but Prof. Levan Gigineishvili's overview of late antique and early medieval Georgian Christian literature is full of errors. He speaks about the legends preserved in medieval Georgian sources as if they were historically accurate (about the Lord's tunic, story of Sidonia and etc.). Medieval Georgian sources about the conversion of Georgia are overwhelmingly legendary and they are not reliable. The oldest inscription in Georgian alphabet is not the inscription of Bir el-Qutt, but the inscriptions discovered in the ruins of the Franciscan church of Nazareth (dated by the beginning of the fifth century A.D. and studied by Prof. Zaza Aleksidze). Also, the date of Bir El-Qatt Georgian inscription given here (388-392 A.D.) is certainly erroneous. Also, there is no any compelling evidence that the governor of Palestine, Georgian prince Bacurius later ascended the throne of Iberia. In all probability, late antique Georgian king Bacurius is a different person. Also, there are not many martyrs killed by Persians as Prof. Gigineishvili claims. There is only Eustathius of Mc'xet'a (Mtskheta) and probably Razhden who was alleged contemporary of king Vakhtang Gorgasali (fifth century), but we cannot say anything about Razhden's historicity because the story of Razhden's martyrdom is preserved only in one metaphrastic hagiographical account dated by the twelfth century.

Dear Shota, I don't think Levan speaks about the legends as historical reality. He speaks about them as legends, and so do I. We mention this several times in the interview. We speak about 'conversion stories'. However, as we only have this legendary material, we have to try to figure out what historical conclusions we can draw from these. You are also dealing with these problems in your own work. This is an interesting methodological challenge. As to the dating of the Bi’r el-Qutt inscriptions, not being experts, we followed Besik Khurtsilava's article 'The inscriptions of the Georgian Monastery in Bi’r el-Qutt and their chronology' (Christianity in the Middle East 1 [2017]: 129-151). I accepted Khurtsilava's claim of the identity of Bakur, the governor of Palestine with King Bakur. I would be happy if you were to give me a valid criticism of the claims in this study and an alternative dating.

@@istvanperczel7164 Dear Prof. Perczel, unfortunately the arguments presented by Khurtsilava are based on flawed premise. According to this fallacious assumption, the monastery of Bi'r el-Qutt was founded by Peter the Iberian. However, there is no any evidence that supports this claim. Georgian scholar Shalva Nutsubidze was first who claimed that the name 'Maruan' mentioned in one of the inscriptions discovered in the ruins of the monastery, was Peter's secular name. According to the Georgian vita of Peter the Iberian, Maruan/Muruanoz was Peter's secular name, but Georgian philologist Akaki Gatserelia showed that Georgian vita of Peter the Iberian is the fifteenth-century forgery, thus extremely unreliable document. On other hand, the Syriac vita of Peter the Iberian contains authentic information (of course, influenced by hagiographical topoi) about Peter's life and from this source we know that before accepting monastic vocation, his name was Nabarnugios and not Muruan/Maruan/Murvanoz. So, the whole theory that Peter built the monastery of Bi'r el-Qutt instantly crumbles down. Actually these inscriptions are securely dated. Paleographical analysis of these inscriptions shows that they were made during fifth or sixth century. Archeological data supports this dating. The foundation of the monastery of Bi'r El-Qutt should have taken place during 532-552: '..the analysis of epigraphic, numismatic and ceramic finds shows that the establishment of the coenobium should be dated to the years 532-552. No remains of earlier structures were discovered during the excavations, and no sign of restoration of the inscriptions can be traced. All the inscriptions were inlayed in the mosaic floors of the complex at the same time, already during the construction phase. The abandonment of the monastery should be dated to the 8 c. It seems that the identification of the Bir el-Qutt complex with the “desert monastery” of Peter the Iberian relying only on the interpretation of historical sources should be rejected,' Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae Volume IV: Iudaea/Idumaea Part 1: 2649-3324, ed. by Walter Ameling · Hannah M. Dear Shota, thanks for writing your remarks. Indeed the legendary traditions are legendary traditions and I do not treat them any less seriously than that. To say that I "treat legends as if they were historically accurate" quite throughly misses the point, for both myself and Istvan made emphasis on tradition ("as tradition says"; "as legend has it" etc.). That a woman converted the Kingdom of Iberia, roughly the same time which the Georgian Church tradition upholds (326), however, is a robust fact, as given account by Rufinus who interviewed prince Bakur on this behalf in 5th century in Jerusalem. As to dating the Jerusalem inscriptions, the main aim was to make the basic claim: the first Georgian inscriptions were found in Palestine Georgian monastic settings in 5th century, the inscriptions in Georgia-proper are a bit later, which gives a ground to a conjuncture that unlike Armenia, where creation of the script was commissioned by the King, for Georgians it happened more sporadically, in Palestinian monastic establishments; actually this was Austrian scholar Werner Seibt's conjuncture (Seibt: "The Creation of the Caucasian Alphabets as Phenomenon of Cultural History"). In a "big brush" way, exactly this info is conveyed. As to Bakur's identification, I agree with your arguments provided to Istvan. Persians did not massively subject Christians to torments, however the religious oppression and coercion could and did receive other forms as well. Glad that you found other parts of the talk interesting.

Thank you very much Doru and Andrew for this interesting interview. I enjoyed it very much and I also learned a lot. No doubt, Doru, you are a very thorough patristic scholar, as you can introduce us to complex topics in a very fascinating way. I would especially like to thank you for reminding us of the need to go back to the Fathers and Mothers of the Church to learn to contemplate nature: a true gift that God brings us and that our contemporary world seems to have forgotten. Also thank you for your profound reflections on ecumenical dialogue and the fundamental role that the Orthodox tradition plays in it. Truly a wonderful interview!

The first words that come to mind after watching this video are: thank you very much, Sebastian and Susan. I was very touched by the fluidity and depth of your conversation. You are two great scholars and at the same time two such warm and sensitive people. The delicacy with which Susan led the dialogue was very moving and the way in which Sebastian analyzed complex issues was a clear demonstration of his immense knowledge of the Syriac tradition and at the same time of his spiritual experience of each one of these issues. Undoubtedly, this dialogue will be a testimony for the new generations of patristic scholars, showing how our field of study is fundamental for our contemporary world regarding topics as difficult as ecumenical dialogue and respect for diversity.

Thank you very much Taras for your second video. As you have shown, the question of the Eucharist is indeed a delicate one and requires a lot of effort and tolerance on the part of all Christian traditions. The function of Patristic Studies is to shed light on the problem and help to find bridges of dialogue.
