4 cylinder is balanced smother engine. 3cylinder also as reliable as 4cylinder. 3cylinder piston size bigger, cylinder length longer working same as 4cylinder. Your concept 1 cylinder extra means extra work and 3cylinder less reliable is wrong. Reliabilty is based on person maintanance, quality engine oil using, driving style.
