Unfortunately, I think the discourse around AK in HP universe and in online discussions is simply and oversite by JK Rowling's worldbuilding. You don't have to be cruel or even have malicious intent to use it, Snape used it on Dumbledore as more of a euthanasia. The idea that it takes a part of the soul seems like a tale parents tell their kids to deter them from using it. If someone uses legal spells with the intent to harm/💀 someone, is the soul still intact? Why is that different? Rowling tried to make it a black and white issue, then introduced shades of grey. It starts off only evil cruel wizardkind use unforgivable curses, to Harry f'in Potter using 2 of them! We even see it in the game when Sans(what's his name) uses it on Isadora. It doesn't seem like it was malicious, just that she had to be stopped.
