Glassy conditions are the hardest to balance in!
I paddled to Muizenberg beach and back on a beautiful winter evening. The route takes me out of Fish Hoek bay past the Kalk Bay harbour and village then past St James toMuizenberg. The route is 10 km and along the way I discuss various points especially why I find calm, glassy conditions to be the most unstable and hardest to balance in! I also ride a wave at St James tidal pool on the way and then surf some more waves at Muizenberg and give some good descriptions of riding a wave and paddling back out through the surf. This route is one of my ‘go to’ routes at home.

มุมมอง 962ปีที่แล้ว
During our first Downwind Camps of the season we take our group of paddlers on a super unique route from Hout Bay around the The Sentinel on the inside of Hout Bay's Seal Island (there are a few "seal islands" on the Cape Peninsula) along the Atlantic Seaboard to Camps Bay. This route passes some incredible scenery. Wikipedia describes it as "The Sentinel or Hangberg is a peak marking the weste...

Riding the longest waves ever! (5 Capes 2023 Episode 1)
มุมมอง 7Kปีที่แล้ว
The 5 Capes is a surfski adventure along the southern coast of South Africa. We paddle around the five most famous capes of Southern Africa on surfskis led by world champions, Jasper and Dawid Mocke. This part of the country offers some of the most scenic coastline and best waves on the planet. Beside that there are amazing trails and spectacular mountains and gorges just begging to be explored...
OLIFANTSBOS DOWNWIND - ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE SURFSKI ROUTES!
มุมมอง 3.4Kปีที่แล้ว
Jasper and @DawidMocke head to Kommetjie again and are joined by Iwona Gangarc, Jess Lee and Heath Clark for a 16km downwind on surfski to Olifantsbos in the Cape Point Nature Reserve. The wind of 15 knots created runs of about 3 feet that was super fun and manageable. This finish is always hard to spot and Jasper stopped to point out the landmarks to the others. We spotted some Bontebok at the...

Downwind in the shadow of Table Mountain from Three Anchor Bay to Big Bay
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
On this day a light south westerly was blowing on the Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula. We started our downwind at Three Anchor Bay the foot of Table Mountain, one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, and headed towards Big Bay which signals the start of the incredible West Coast of Africa. After paddling out for a few kilometers we got onto a good line for the finish. The runs were 1 - 2 ...
We paddled to a secret beach at Cape Point. Flattest day ever!
มุมมอง 953ปีที่แล้ว
This is the flattest day we have ever experienced at Cape Point. After launching at Platboom beach and hugging the cliffs at the Cape of Good Hope the water turned a magnificent turquoise blue. There was no swell so we paddled next to the sand at Dias beach. Unheard of! As the group moved on to the Point two of us checked out a secret beach. Its possible that no one has ever been there! Let us ...
The Millers Run wasn’t working so we went from Kommetjie to Scarborough ☀️🌊
มุมมอง 1.8Kปีที่แล้ว
This paddle was during our Downwind Camps in January 2023. Usually we do the Millers Run, the best downwind in the world, but on this day the North West wind was blowing which meant False Bay was flat so we loaded up the trailer and van to drive over the Cape Peninsula and paddle a unique route. Our paddlers loved it! They saw some amazing scenery and paddled on the Atlantic ocean. This is the ...

Can you share what the two tennis balls are for? Thanks!
looks amazing , lekker vid
I agree about glassy conditions. Odd phenomenon.
Nice little vid mate, love those glassy conditions but man, that looks pretty Sharky to me, especially that late in the Arvo!🦈 That's a great wave to have a play on though🤙🤙
Lekker vid. I'm on kommetjie side which is rough in winter. I think I'll come your side for evening paddles as it looks dreamy.
So true about glass! Great POV starting at 6:22. That'd make a fine short video.
Your winter looks way better than our summer 😂
Unbelievable skill and technique to handle that cross swell like a Boss. Making such tricky conditions look easy in the V12. Superb, Jasper. Coaching points are epic too and how well you filmed. Proper advanced gold. I think all who have attempted or want to learn these skills appreciate this hugely! Thanks!
Could not understand what you were saying.
Love your videos bro
Love the videos so much. Obsessed.
"If you've got speed, you've got options", love it.
I have sat on the back of a double ski with Dawid Mocke, and was amazed what he caught and the sprint power he turned on well before I would spool up power for a wave. Its great to see what Dawid & Jasper Mocke does to catch more complicated swells and runs!
We have very different challenges, I just try to not get run over by drunken wh*te trash boaters on the Mississippi River. Lol
Great videos! I often have small, short waves like this, so great to see how you deal with the conditions. I greatly appreciate this video series! Cheers from Canada!
Can anyone from here tell me how it compares to the V8 pro?
Thanks, very helpful
Lucky you 😍
Seems you are using a very short paddle lenght maybe 205cm?
Fantastic Jasper !!! ... Thank you ! BTW what ski did you paddle? V12?
Thanks Jasper, most enjoyable and super impressed you can switch feather like that!! Awesome skills
To have stumbled on this video: what a fantastic way to begin my day...! I happened to meet a guy who was in an Epic kayak and now I must look into one for myself. The scenery and production of this video is remarkable. The enthusiasm in your voice is contageous! I kayak before sunrise here in the Gulf of Mexico... way before the world awakens and the man-made noises begin. Cheers from Florida.
Thank you for the kind message Alec. Every bit of encouragement means so much to us 🙏
Wow, excellent video. A bit more than I would usually take on but very good info to have because you never know. Random question - what is the purpose of the two tennis balls connected by the orange line in front of your feet? Cheers!
Hi Jake! No purpose for this paddle! I use them for resistance (strength) training (by wrapping it around the boat with the tennis balls underneath) on flatter days and just keep them on the surfski.
Very nice! great coaching ...
Glad you liked it!
Awesome video! 👏👏👏 Those memories!
The best!
Nice work Jasper. That gives me something to focus on when paddling in rebounding conditions in Sydney
Por favor, subtítulos en español, gracias
Reaching over the foam so important. It is easy to get a bit scared and reflexively take a brace, but that is the worst thing you can do.
Jasper, that footage of the crane wreck is totally awesome ! Incredible how something so old, discarded and decayed can simultaneously be beautiful.
So true Richard! Will be interesting to see how it breaks up in the next few years.
Nice one!
Jasper. Fantastic video. Perfect for the skills I need to refine for the Doctor. Thank you. BTW, I saw the tennis balls in your ski. Why weren’t you using them haha. 😅
Cant believe they flatten the dunes...there goes the SEr protection and enjoying the grass after a chilly dw.
Nice little help carrying the boat at the end-great team comraderie! 😊
Amazing run! Good to see Iwona!
Por favor puedes poner subtítulos en español? Gracias
Muchas gracias
Great vid on everything: Lessons, techniques, beautiful surfing & scenery. Grand Finality of coming into the breach.
Watched it all over my morning coffee dude. Learned lots and had a few laughs along with you as i remember them days on the waves… picked up lots of tips there . Keep up the good films dude. Ever in Ireland let’s go for a paddle.
Would love to 👊🏼🇮🇪🇿🇦
@@paddleafrica happy out sure let’s do it! Might be a little colder 🥶 😂
Can you please tell me what are the tennis balls used for? Great video too, it’s good to see and you explain other paddlers 👏👏👏
Best instructional video I've ever seen. Thank you! (Swells that big through a GoPro lens are even bigger in the real world!) Only 500 views for it in a month proves just how underrated down wind paddling is. (Not that I'm complaining -what used to be an obscure sport now has surfers all over the world thinking nothing of taking a number in the lineup to get a ride!)
Thanks so much 🙏 For the dream!
Great video and great tips. What are the two tennis balls on the ski?
I was also looking at those and wondering the same thing.
Hey Ron, I use them for resistance training on the flatter days to build strength. I leave them on my ski otherwise I'll forget them (although sometimes I wish I did!)
Great as always Jasper! Thanks for the tips and advice.
Thanks Darrin. Love seeing the pics of you paddling.
thank you^^
You're welcome 😊
This covered a lot of the technical aspects of downwinding that I’ve been working on! Such a great video down to the beach landing explanation. Thanks Jasper!!
Glad it was helpful!
If I could just find. the $4000-plus :)
Great video, thanks for sharing! 👍
All over the place! I am useless in these conditions. Don’t paddle in it often enough and just not comfortable. Also a challenge getting off the beach
Come join us for a few sessions in Fish Hoek Stu!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Jasper, just bought my first ski and really looking forward to getting some downwind experience on it! Been consistently strong offshore here just north of Sydney. Agree with the use of small runners not going in the main swell and wave directions, I use them all the time in my sea kayak to help keep speed up. Saving my pennies to get onto one of your courses now!
Would love to host you here 👍🏼
3:38 is absolutely flying, considering you're not lined up with the bigger swell!
The small in between runs are the best kept secret! Absolute gold.
Excellent !!!!!! Thanks Jasper, brilliant beach entry, great skill!👌💪
Lekker Brian. Sure we will see you over the summer in Fish Hoek.
