This Endgame Puzzle Has Only One Drawing Move – Can You Find It?
Opposition Video: th-cam.com/video/ffVfTpG4cBA/w-d-xo.html
Hello and welcome back to another beautiful puzzle from Dvoretsky endgame manual. It’s white to move and draw this game, and trust me, the first move is not an easy move to find. I would give you a few seconds to see if you can find the solution.
Chess opposition is a key concept in endgames where one king directly faces the opponent's king with an odd number of squares between them. By maintaining the opposition, a player can control critical squares and force their opponent's king to retreat, gaining a positional advantage. Mastering opposition is essential for converting pawn endgames into victories or achieving draws in otherwise losing positions. It demonstrates the power of precise king maneuvering in chess endgames
I hope you enjoyed this puzzle. Let me know in the comments if you managed to solve it up until the end, or at least you found the first correct move. Even if at first glance it seemed an easy puzzle, you can really see the beauty of chess. This seemingless easy endgame is much much more complex than it looks like.
Thank you again for watching and I would see you in the next ones.

Way Too Many People Blunder This Winning Queens And Pawns Endgame
The whole thing is how to keep winning the opposition.
Solved the first move, blundered into a draw.
Wow, that was brilliant. Thanks for that. I couldn't see how White could win!
Kf1
Kf1
Why didn't you put the link to where you posted it on Facebook in the description? Do you expect us to just believe you?
I was thinking 1Kf2 KF4 (gain opposition, if KG4 2 Kxg2, if 1…Ke4 2 Kxe2 and the win is intuitive here.) 2 Rg1 (waiting move, the take the pawn on the side the king moves to
Found the first correct mive:))
Oposision? Triangulation? Skewer? Shadowing? Discover attack?
there is a small trick black has when the kings on d3 and h3 and that is g4 giving up the pawn and if the pawn takes even though you both queen at the same time there is Qh1 forcing the king to the g file and then Qg1 skewers the king and queen i mean you can just take with the king but shhhhhhhh
The important lesson from this puzzle is to always try and maintain king opposition. Knowing where your king is in relation to the enemy king is of absolute importance in most endgames and it’s easy to get distracted from its role as primary defender and divert it away from where it needs to be. In this case the pawns are undefended and the rook covers the entire back rank, they are not going anywhere without the black king’s help. Stopping the black king’s advance is priority number one.
Very good learning experience! Subbed
Well explained EXCEPT that when you take the Distant Opposition you need an ODD number of squares between the Kings , NOT even - so 1 or 3 squares ❤
Yes, I realized that I made a mistake and mix them up after another person comment on this
I'm kinda bad at tactics but I solved it instantly... I've been practicing my speed by playing 3+0 against stockfish 2, 30 times a day for a week. I only win if I get 92%+ accuracy. By the end of the week I was getting 9/10 games 92%+ accuracy.
Good explanation, I'm happy to know I am capable of finding the answer though had I not known this was a puzzle I'm not so sure... Well maybe, the first few moves were pretty clear
90% might be more accurate than 99%, I really hope people above 1500 rapid aren't messing this up
instructive
Блестяще! Во время блица скорей всего ошибёшься и упустишь победу в эндшпиле.
I saw king takes was wrong, and correctly guessed Kf2 as the correct first move, but I definitely couldn't see the entire line, so it was more guess/instinct than proper calculation.
Kf2, white is winning. The white king creates a barrier to the black king by taking opposition.
Damn what a can of worms xD
I saw king f2 immediately before even clicking the video. But my endgame rating is over 2000, so I guess that is good (it is elo and not fide which was only in the 1800s when I did OTB). Basically, this is a problem of opposition. Always keep opposition to the opponent's king. In the variation where the white king takes on c2 and the black king goes to e3 the white king has given up opposition. All other positions that are winning maintain opposition to the king.
When you say, "we have uneven number of squares" It sounds like, "we have an even number of squares" Better to say, "do we have AN UNEVEN number of squares?" I know English isn't your mother tongue, just thought you could benefit for further videos to avoid any confusion. Thanks
Thanks, i would keep that in mind
Or perhaps better say an "ODD" number of squares" instead of "uneven". (I also heard it as "even".)
The only wrong idea I considered was Rxc2 (which obviously doesn’t work) I never even considered taking anything with the King… It just seemed clear that the King should attack both the other pawns simultaneously with Kf2. (No calculation of alternatives required)
Nice instincts over there
Funfact: King dont here thats checkmate
Intuitively my mind played KF2. It just "seems" Right
Great instincts
Great lesson. Greetings from Düsseldorf, Germany.
Glad you liked it!
It would help if you said who was to play.
I saw king F2 after pausing on the thumbnail for a bit
Nice visualization
Brilliant lesson on opposition. Thank you.
I am glad you liked the video
Given the title of the video, I was immediately suspicious of pawn captures. Saw that keeping opposition with the king and wasting tempo with the rook were the general ideas. I avoided all the blunders you highlighted, and thought I had essentially solved it. But I definitely had not seen the idea with cutting off the King with the took ahead of you reaching that position, and had to pause for 5-10 minutes and go through a thought process before spotting the idea. Good puzzle, endgame are hard.
I am glad you liked the video. This is one key difference between puzzles and real games. In puzzle you know there is a solution and you are looking for it, while in real game you play what you think it''s the best movement at that time
@@ChessCrafters-lk4dv Yes ofcourse, you can't spend too much of your effort looking at weird Queen sacrifices in real games 😉
@ why not when that was the best move
@@ChessCrafters-lk4dv Was that comment for me? There's no name in your tag. I was making a light hearted joke about constantly looking to sac your queen in a real game because it works well in puzzles, I wasn't talking about this puzzle.
It was not so hard, first moves was easy then i had to think, wery nice.
Congrats on finding it
One of the most important rules in ches is don't play for your opponent, play only for yourself.
?? How. If you don't find your opponents best move, but they do.. You're screwed
bro wants everyone to stay in 100 elo
"the winning move is King to f2" "YEAHHHHHH🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉"
I saw Kf2 and putting the white king in opposition to the black king, but I definitely did not see all the complicated combinations afterwards. This is not an 'easy' puzzle by any means....
All the endgame in Dvoresky are a real adventure.
Very instructive, thank you. Note that, in English, 1 ,3, 5 etc. are _odd_ numbers, while 2, 4, 6 etc. are _even_ numbers. I hope that this helps.
Did i mix them up? 😓
@@ChessCrafters-lk4dv I think you did.
@ sorry…
@ You needn't be. ;)
Kf2, first thing that comes to mind tbh. Probably have to be a bit careful after that, but doesn't look too hard
Nah, wherever the black king goes, just take a pawn with the white king in that direction. White forms a barrier with the king
Woohoo, I'm a 99%'er!!
You won't be after seeing this video
One more variant: 1. Kf2 Ke4 2. Ke2 Kd4 3. Rg1 Ke4 4. Re1 Ke5 If 5. Kd3 then 5. ... Kf4 with threat to reach f2. So, 6. Ke2 Ke4 and white hasn't achieved progress. The best move is 5. Ke3 Now after 5. ... Kd5 6. Kd3 and black king cannot defend g pawn let alone c pawn. Let's move on 5. ... Ke6 6. Ke4 Ke7 7. Kd3 Kf6 8. Kc2 Kf5 9. Rg1 Kf4 10. Rg2
Kh1 very simple
Nice, but it's only simple because you knew about opposition
If you want to learn more about opposition, I have linked a video in the description that would explain this concept in more depth, so be sure to check that out!
Hi youre making a mistake in your video You keep saying "even" for opposition. However you mean "odd" 1,3,5,7, and 9 are all odd numbers. However regardless of this, this still isnt even correct, as if the kings are on two different rows, say row 7 and 8, then itll be an even number of squares. Since an odd numbers times an even number is an even number. In short, at least say odd, but outside of that you need a better definition regardless.
Solve it in less than 10 seconds.
I somehow doubt that you solved it until the end in just 10 seconds
Maybe its because I'm a total beginner, but I saw king to f2 immediately because i didn't even consider the movements of the opponent's king and I just wanted to clear out the bottom row for my rook to take whichever pawn promoted and I could see taking a pawn with the rook was losing
Nice instinct
I managed first 2 moves, but I would've blundered after that
Funny thing is, I'm a recreational chess hater and as such have near 0 idea what I'm doing
You cannot win because after d7, Be8, d8=B, Black has Bh5 and draw
You should think before you say something, youre probably younger than your youtube account lol. after bh5 its be7+ ke8 b5#
Figured out that this was an opposition puzzle instantly with where the kings were at the start. Mixed with a little rook file blocking at the end there to be able to nab the two other pawns to convert into an easy rook king checkmate.
Nice pattern recognition
I managed to solve it less than 25 secs because it happened plenty times on my games and i learned from the analysis. A chess coach also told me what to do about these kinds of posistions many days ago. When pawns are apart 1 squares from each other, you need to look for a possibility that the king can attack them both. I also see that the rook covers the 3rd pawn's promotion so yeah
Congrats on solving it so fast! Great coach
nicely done
Thanks
Saw the move pretty quick but apparently failed to consider all the variations.
It's important to see the main ones, I covered all the variations for teaching purpose
my instinctive move is to move rook to e1 first
E4 by black and he would be ably to draw this
