The Uk government and local councils over decades have failed this once proserous town and the city of Stoke. If you visit similar cities around the country (Sheffield for example) they've had huge investment, which attracts retail and business. Its the job of our local MPs to get money from central government to regenerate, and our MPs are happy clapping gaining 20m which doesn't even paper over the cracks.

Quality shops back in the sixties, must be about 1961/62, minis and PMT Atlanteans but no mk 1 Cortinas, but a mk 2 sprite/ midget. The travesty was knocking down the old municipal hall, even it's replacement civic offices have gone now. Vape shops, charity shops and phone fix shops, that's what it's become. Blockleys, the co op, Mandley and unett, Pauldens, Bickleys, Collins, Henry White, Clement Wain, the list of high quality shops was never ending, but it's a familiar story in many towns. The likes of Chester and Shrewsbury are still worth a visit. The main hit to Newcastle and S O T is the local industrial decline, the pits, the Michelin, Shelton bar steel works, Doulton and Wedgwood group factories, no jobs except call centres and Warehouses, progress indeed.

What an extraordinary film. I was born in May Bank in 1960 and remember nearly everything shown here except the railway. The municipal hall was a sad loss. I have been living in Malta for 15 years now. The last time I went back was 2018 and it was quite sad to see the state of the town. I gather most of the shops are closed now. The Council has a lot to answer for.
