Super useful "Swiss Cheese" Lathe Tool Post - Mini Lathe Project
มุมมอง 3.3Kปีที่แล้ว
Video showing how I made this holed tool post which I call my "swiss cheese tool post". The idea being to hold tools with a round shank (such as micro boring bars) with minimal fuss and to allow quick setup. The tool is easy to make and can be finished in just a weekend on a typical mini or micro lathe. This one was produced for my Cowells 90ME lathe but the design could easily be adapted for o...

Lathe Headstock Depth Stop - Easy Mini Lathe Project
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
I made this simple but very useful headstock depth stop gadget for my Cowells 90ME micro lathe. The simple design lends itself to being adapted for use on other small lathes such as an Emco Unimat SL, Sherline or Taig. The stop can be produced in less than a weekend and so makes a good, quick and easy mini lathe project. I made all of the parts needed on the Cowells lathe itself to show what ca...

I Make A Portable DC Power Supply (For Makita LXT Drill Battery)
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I decided to make a small adjustable power supply adapter that would use an ordinary cordless drill battery to power my 12v -24v DC tools. These include my Minicraft rotary tools, Proxxon sander, various other craft tools and my Miniware TS100 soldering iron. The idea was to make them portable so they could be used elsewhere, like in a car, boat, motorhome, garden or anywhere away from home. Fo...

I think that the flywheel is not very balanced, but it's a very good job! Привет из России!!!
Also very helpful, thank you. My mind went immediately to : could we make a die filer out of this setup ? Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
I bought a Sherline 4 jaw self centering chuck about a year or so ago for my Unimat SL DB-200. Am I able to just flip the jaws around and match up to the same numbers? I have no idea. Thanks ahead of time.
He encounter the great rust GOD

Ingenious and kind of see how this works but surely, when you want a different thread pitch, you need to change the threaded collar that goes behind the chuck? On a more conventional lathe, it would be a matter of setting up the gear-train. Nice though quiet presentation and keep up the good work!
@@jozefbubez6116 Yep, you have to change the threaded collar. Not the most convenient thing ever. 😬 Thanks for watching.👍
@@machinist_matt Many thanks for your kind info. I kind of guessed that was going to be the case. I have been considering extending the principle to a home-built mini lathe (ca. 1978) but either we change the collar or if we keep to one, then we need a gear-train to get the other pitches so it would be kind of 're-inventing the wheel'! At age 74 I'm unlikely to invest in a Unimat as for the few things I need the home-built serves well enough but at least for me thinking about these things provides some enjoyment and mental exercise. As for lathes in general, you can keep adding bits on and the more unorthodox solutions are all the more interesting.
Just watched again Matt. This tool is absolutely spot on. Video is very clear and well presented and as you made it on the Cowells itself, even better. 👍😊.
@@philipporyder7467 Thank you buddy 🙂👍
Dnd se podrá comprar. Desde chile
Very clear instructions. Thanks to you I got it right the first try.
Hello, please tell me how I can find out the year of manufacture of the machine. Perhaps there is some kind of mark.
@@rusishberdin5139 Hi. I don't know sorry. 🙁
3:18 love the miscellaneous screws drawer. I split mine into 3 2-compartment drawers in my small parts cabinet thing: tiny, small, and medium, plus machine screw and plastic/wood/sheet metal screw compartments for each of them. Any time I take things apart, I can't help but think "that's a nice screw", and in it goes.
😂 I have mine "organised" into thread size, but everything smaller than 3mm goes in the same drawer.
Thanks for doing this video. I wanted to see how it worked before I bought one. I see you ne a different thread drum for each different thread you want to cut.
Beautiful tools. I wish I'd learned about them sooner...
Would it be possible to put a Bolt in the chuck and a Nut as the follower as to get various Threads, Just a thought.
So, it's been a few years now. I would've thought that mounting the speed controller above the power supply might cause issues due to heat rising. Have there been any problems? I may end up mimicking this in some ways. Good work!
@@Chromevulcan No problems! Though I don't use it for long periods of time. One of the great things about using the extruded aluminum is that it acts as a massive heatsink! I made a similar base for my Cowells lathe, but instead I used a KBIC style controller. The KBIC controllers are well known for getting very hot. Mine being attached directly to the extruded frame, barely even gets warm!
@@machinist_matt Outstanding! Thanks for the quick reply.
Awesome idea,I'm looking to get myself a model making size lathe very soon . Thanks for this Matt
Where do I get one
Bro!! The drill battery idea connection is brilliant!

What a contraption..........someone has twisted thinking.
I will use this design for my steamboat model, great engine!
Is it just an air compressor?
@@egb33665 Yes just a small airbrush air compressor. 🙂
Where can i find the drawings?
@@egb33665 The plans are from the book: "Cowells 90 Lathe - A Handbook by A. Smith" Unfortunately I can't really provide them, because I might be in breach of copyright.

Thanks for sharing.
how much distance of the crank pin from the crank edge?
I’ve been thinking of making such post but focused on finishing my mill! Great video!
Does anyone know if this one, or another type of Chinese belt sander takes the same belts as Ken Onion sharpeners?
Thanks! May make the jump in the future.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! 🙂👍
Miniature is the key word here. Another excellent engine ! 👌
It's a decent designed lathe but it's just too small. If it was twice as big, it would make it easier to work with. Regarding the return spring, I'd just take it off.
are these little lathes any good turning mild steel?
It's entirely possible to turn mild steel, EN1A is pretty easy to work with. Though to be honest, they are more suited to brass and aluminium. 🙂
Thank you!!
For my Unimat DB, I made one to hold an 11 mm drill bit (useful for M12×1.00 threaded holes), plus a 1/4" hole for various useful bits. Very much appreciated!
Can you please tell me how you get the feed to reverse?
Hello. The only way to reverse the feed is by changing the direction the small belt is looped/twisted around the power feed pulley. Hope that helps! 🙂
Please, never use this nice but dangerous accessory…..even if you protect the lathe bed, always some abrasive particles could spoiler the lathe….😢
Okay, now let’s try stainless steel! 😂😂😂😂 Wow, I’m glad you’ve shown this! The setup time is way more than I thought! I’m sticking to tap and die for now and save for some small later with threading ability! Thanks for the video! Very detailed!
Yes, it's much easier to use taps and dies! Thanks for watching. 👍
Very nice
And here we have, the Edison Phonograph.
Very nicely done, I will look forward other videos.
This works like the threading attachment on a Hardridge tool room lathe. On the Hardridge the master mounts on the outboard end of the lathe spindle. This makes changing thread pitches about a one minute job.
Great stuff, spent two hours before I thought of TH-cam ,very helpful.👍
Where do you get belts for the SL? I have that attachment, but someone before up a jigsaw blade in the bottom?
Hi. I get my belts from a guy on eBay (UK). 🙂
Indeed this is the worth thing you could do in the lathe, considering the very delicate metal of the Unimat 3😮
