In this video, I hope to cover all engines that BMW ever fitted to the legendary 4th generation E46 3 series, and what their strong points and weaknesses are!

In the N4X section of the video, I stated that the N42 engine is of the interference type due to both my research and lack of clarity from BMW. Having done some further reading, (as well as research by BimmerZen in his video th-cam.com/video/lfXQMHYGZLA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=h52a3pAYa8K10t6d), I can conclude that the N40/2/6 engines are more likely than not NOT interference engines. That is not to say however that their tendency to skip teeth is harmless, as mis-timed valve actuation can lead to misfiring, loss of power and ultimately permanent damage to components in the engine.
