      As far as I know, the only “special “ characteristics about this Ferrari are that it is in immaculate condition and the owner actually drives it. I got to go for laps at Circuit of The Americas the day this video was taken. Thanks for watching, subscribing and asking your question.

    Great video thank you. I owned a 997.1 C4S and loved it, raw, mechanical and beautiful to look at. I then bought the most stunning, classic 911 possible and what a machine…………..991.1 C2 GTS. Looks and drives like the piece of art it is. A 997 GTS v 991 GTS would have been a totally different experience.

      Except the points I brought up apply equally to the 991 Carrera, S and GTS. The comparison is between generations, not specific models. There is nothing inherently about the 997.2 GTS version that is different from an S, aside from some additional power and handling, both of which were not points I brought up. The critical difference between the 997 and 991 generation is sheer size, 4 inch longer wheel base and many obvious cost cutting areas in the design of body panels, interior panels and other details. The newer generations have really moved up into gran touring cars, no longer sports cars. Ironically, no less significant figure than Porsches own head of 911 design admitted that the current generations have become too large and he said he would like to return to the size of the 997. I am far from alone in my feelings about the 997 generation being the high water mark for the 911. And resale values now reflect this. There are now multiple recent sales of the 997.2 GTS between $160,000 and $170,000. Original stickers were $115,000 - $123,000. Also as I started the video with, all 911 are awesome and if they only ever made one, we would all love it. Thanks for watching, sharing your thoughts and subscribing. And congratulations on your awesome 911 GTS!

    You really nailed this review. All 911s are great cars, but the 997.2 is at the top of the mountain IMO as a sports car. My 4S feels like it is glued to the road. But it has nothing more than it needs. You mentioned the slot for putting a phone; my 991.2 and Boxster 25 years did not have that. That was a huge mistep. The newest model got rid of the great hidden cup holders and replaced them with a cup holder for a huge cup in the center concole. It looks like capable of holding a 32 oz. jug of soda from a popular convenience store, like in a 1985 Chevy Astro Mini-Van. I am not down with that.

    Having owned and driven a '07 997C4S for 10 years, 6 speed, and loving every minute, I traded for a 2014 CS 991 PDK. I have driven both cars on 2000 mi + tours. I can truthfully share the 991 is far superior to the 997. I love the PSK for it's ability to always be in the best gear at any time, and the ease of driving in heavy traffic in cities or the mountains. The PSE is excellent.Once you get used to the bells and whistles, it is a hoot! So, that's my opinion, from someone that has owned them both!

    Agree with the assessment. I went from 997 to 991 and then back to 991 after a year 😂 The 991 is a great car but it does not give me enough 911 vibe. Too big, too refined, too far removed from pureness. Let’s not forget the 991 is the first generation under full VW ownership. It shows.

    Great review - very insightful. I am tossing up between the two but now for interested in the 997.2. Any thoughts on a GTS vs Turbo? I’d aim to use the car 4 days a week for commute. Just want to enjoy life more :D

    • @GTSCarLife
      @GTSCarLife หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your support. The 997 GTS and Turbo are very different models. Both are highly desirable and hold their values well. They appeal to different buyers for different reasons. The GTS is marketed by Porsche as the ultimate drivers model (not including the GT models which are intended primarily for track use, and not well suited for street or daily use) while the Turbo and Turbo S were among the fastest cars on the planet in their time and are considered more super fast GT / touring cars. Typically their owners will have a strong preference for one over the other. In my case, because of my racing background I prefer the driver focused, naturally aspirated GTS. If I didn’t daily mine, which I do, I would have purchased a 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0. But as much as I love that ultimate GT car, it doesn’t work for the way I use my car, which is both as my everything daily and also my track car. I’ll be on track at COTA again next weekend. The Turbo on the other hand is an excellent weekend cruiser and probably even better suited for long, cross country drives. It does have noticeable turbo lag, which is something I can’t live with. I also don’t like the busy body styling with the large side intakes and cutaways in the rear bumper. But that’s obviously personal preference. Porsche itself doesn’t race the Turbo, utilizes races the naturally aspirated GT3 which is essentially a stiffer riding, more track built version of what the GTS is. If you have the opportunity, I’d strongly recommend you drive a Turbo. If the amazing acceleration of that car appeals to you, then you may have your answer. Either way, you’ll have an example of what is truly one of the finest cars ever made. Thank you for watching and subscribing!

      Thanks for the comprehensive input. Thoughts on a 997.1 vs 997.2 turbo? We don’t have much second hand GTS’s here in Australia. I think I only found one 997.2 GTS secondhand so far

    • @GTSCarLife
      @GTSCarLife หลายเดือนก่อน

      @niccolosun3416 Sure, the GTS was a very limited production model, only 314 coupes for 2011 here in America. The unique design, features and low production volume all combine to make the GTS something very special and also is the main driving factor behind the outstanding resale value. If you’re on the fence and have more options with a 997 Turbo, I’m sure you will be happy with one. The main difference is refined exterior design and an enhanced dashboard design with touchscreen on the 997.2. Also, if you don’t go with the manual, the 997.2 has the faster F1 style PDK instead of the MB designed Tiptronic.

    I currently have a 997.2 Carrera S, which I bought after my very first 911, a 2017 991.2 Carrera was sadly totaled. After having both cars, I can say that I tend to go against the prevailing wisdom of most Porsche enthusiasts and I think the 991.2 is one of the best versions of the 911 ever produced! I miss the sound of the turbos whisping, the sports exhaust sounded amazing, and the low end torque was so fun around town. By comparison, the 997.2 doesn’t sound as good. The interior has some creaking in it, and it doesn’t feel as solid. I also think the pure esthetics of the design is far superior on the 991.2 than the 997.2. The back of the 997.2 is awkward, the taillights look too fat for my taste, and I actually prefer the lowered stance of the 991 over the bubbly look of the 997. The 2017 felt so much more powerful and special than my current one also. Don’t get me wrong, I love my 2009 version. Every 911 is special and a fantastic car by any measure and I am so blessed to be able to care for one. The 992 is way too big for me, and I hate all the black plastic and there are too many gadgets in the interior. I’d much rather have my current 2009 than a brand new one! But I would take my 2017 back from its early grave any day of the week if I could! I will probably be ravaged for that opinion, but I don’t care! I love my 997.2 and I drive it everywhere! I just miss my 991.2.

    • @GTSCarLife
      @GTSCarLife หลายเดือนก่อน

      First of all, thank you, sincerely for watching, subscribing and sharing your opinion. Nobody can rightly ravage you for lovinga 991.2, specially one you owned and lost. As I said in the very first sentence of the video, all 911s are awesome, and if Porsche only made one, it would be fantastic and we would all love it. My judgment is based on the definition of a traditional sports car. There are plenty of air cooled 911 owners who think any water cooled 911 is too big, too soft and not a real 911. That’s OK, it’s their opinion and there’s a 911 for them for sure. I’m about to turn 59 and my opinion reflects my life experiences and the cars I grew up with. For me, a 911 looks like the impact bumper era, air cooled models of the 80’s. That has always been a 911 to me. I am fortunate to be able to drive my dream car, which is this 2011 911 Carrera GTS. If I wanted an air cooled 911, 964 or 993 I would have that instead. They are not as good as a daily driver because they lack safety, comfort, and other features that the 997 has. And they are painfully inadequate on track. As for the 991 and 992, they just feel too big and civilized to me. I feel, and I am far from alone on this, that they have transitioned into luxury GT cars. Again, nothing wrong with that, just not, as close to an ideal 911 in my view. I will say, it surprises me how many people agree with you that the 992 is far too big, but the 991 is not. They are essentially the same platform with styling changes, similar to how the 997 and 996 are essentially the same basic platform. Lastly, I think that since the 992 has crossed over into the GT car class, the Turbo and Turbo S versions are the best new 911. Too big to be sports cars, but I would take one over an Aston Martin, Bentley or Mercedes coupe any day of the week. Again, thank you for watching. I hear you and the criticisms you had of your 997 are certainly legitimate. They are older cars, and I guess those of us who prefer them, consider that part of their character or charm. Cheers, Thomas.

      @@GTSCarLife Your GTS is a beautiful car! Love the black leather interior. I do love my 2009 Carrera S, and I think it is a gorgeous car, so fun to drive, and it has been super reliable. I've taken it on several 500+ mile road trips, and it is so fun doing things like that. I think any 911 is so hard to criticize and it just boils down to nitpicking at that point! They are all so special and wonderful to drive. I think that is the best thing about Porsche. We are all so passionate about our cars, and they have done such a good job over the last half a century in giving each of us something we love. I love seeing any 911 whether its a brand new Turbo S or a 2001 Carrera with 100,000 miles, each of those cars would thrill me the same to talk to their owners and sit in it for a ride. As different as they are, I also love how very similar they are too. You can look at every 911 and know instantly it belongs to that family. Most other brands can't really say the same, at least not to the same degree. Thanks for the reply and great video!

    This review is very good and thorough, but the bias is very strong. I understand the 997 is more "peak" Porsche due to what they were proving but the 991 is a newer aged incredible machine. This same conversation is had in the corvette community, between generations. Its funny to see in the Porsche community too.

    It has been 11 months since you did this excellent review of the Taycan Cross Turismo 4S. I'm considering getting a 2021 CPO one with 16,000 miles on the odometer. Has there been any surprises, recalls, battery or software issues? I know these heavy vehicles go through tires pretty quickly, but I'm ok with that. I am also aware the range sucks compared to other EV offerings, but I simply love the exterior design so much that I'm willing to adapt to the 200-mile range.

    • @GTSCarLife
      @GTSCarLife หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well first of all, thank you for watching, subscribing and commenting on my videos. I appreciate your support. I literally just came in from checking tire pressures in the garage, and sat down to reply to your questions. The most important news to share from my perspective, is that we are now less than 4 months out from 2 years since we took delivery at Porsche Experience Center, Atlanta and made the 1,302 mile journey home in January 2023. The Taycan has still not had one single failure which required any visit to the dealer, nor have we spent a single dollar on maintenance. Obviously all new cars incorporate a truly significant amount of software, and sometimes it amazes me that these car companies are able to make these things work at all, considering how many times I have to reboot my Apple iMac or iPhone. And there have been grand failures, the truly awful Fisker, all early Teslas and some early Lucid models among them. Even the early Taycans had their fair share of software glitches (maybe more than their share?) but the dealers I spoke with all told me that the cars were mechanically very sound, typically Porsche and that it was just a matter of making the software right. That is a superior position to be in to those of people who own cars, and yes I'm looking at you Tesla, where the mechanical bits and quality are lacking. Software can be fixed rather easily, but shoddy materials, fit, finish and build quality last the life of the vehicle. Because ours is a 2023, we were able to avoid the "excitement" of software issues that earlier purchasers had to endure, and I'm very happy about that because I understand how a few bad experiences can be enough to sour someone on the entire vehicle. As for your comment regarding range, in our experience (and I've seen similar reports all across the Internet) we see up to 311 miles of range at 100% charge, which we rarely charge to, and 248 miles routinely at 80% charge. The range of the Taycan is actually quite good, and has been increased further for the 2025 model. I just purchased my 7th Porsche, a 2011 987.2 Cayman S for my son, which I will be releasing a video on soon, and I am reminded how well Porsche engineers and constructs their vehicles, from our 40 year old 944 which just moved to it's new owner to make garage space for the Cayman, to our 2023 Taycan 4S Cross Turismo. And yes, of all the cars I have ever had the pleasure to own and or drive, this Taycan remains the most exciting car to drive that we've ever experienced. In my opinion, a CPO model from a reputable Porsche dealer is a great way to go. Please update me on what you end up getting!

      Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your comments. I am around these cars all the time, and spend a lot of time in the full variety of 911's on track at COTA. I also daily my 2011 997.2 GTS coupe with PDK and track it frequently. To answer your question, it really depends on what YOU want from your car. For simple, pure driving around town, either as a daily or a Sunday cruiser, the Carrera S manual is more than enough 911, will cost a ton less these days (the 997.2 gen GTS is going crazy now - there is one on BaT right now that will probably set the new record, surpassing the $166,000 set by a Macadamia Brown GTS a few months ago. This black GTS is already at $150,000 with several days to go) My 2003 Carrera was a base manual and it remains one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. But for me, I fell in love with the idea that the GTS was the final, best version of the 997 generation, and I wanted to own the best. Also, as someone who is on track frequently, PDK is vastly superior for accomplishing fast lap times. The F1 racers aren't using manuals, they are racing with a PDK style transmission, so any conversation that mocks people with PDK is silly. Tell Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso that they aren't real men because they dont drive an old school manual! If budget is a factor, or if you will never rack your ar and just want the finest generation of 911 ever made, buy the Carrera S manual. You will have no regrets. Let me know where you end up!

I also owned a 996 which is the car in the video, and also a 997 and the 997 materials are definitely of higher quality. Verstappen and Norris signed their F1 development deals very young, as early as age 15 or 16. So at 11 if you have video of your karting accomplishments, by all means share them online! The best way to work into a racing career at your age is to demonstrate you are faster around the tracks than the other guys and to put together small businesses that will sponsor your racing in exchange for awareness and recognition. Great review.I agree the best 911 is the one you own. IMO the 997.2 is the best combination of the old and new. The naturally aspirated engine, hydraulic steering, smaller, lighter is what makes it a great sports car. Plus it has some aspects of new electronics (touch screen etc.). I have owned both. The driving feel of the 997.2 is totally different than the 991. One is a sports car the other is more like a grand touring car. I traded a 991 4S PDK for a Boxster 25 years (manual) to get more of a sports car feel. I recently bought a 2010 997.2 cab. What a beautiful car!

    • @GTSCarLife
      @GTSCarLife 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All true. Each new generation of Porsche can be counted on to be faster, stick better and brake shorter. And cost more! So had this been a comparison on performance, the results would have been flipped. But the question was, which 911 is the best sports car, the best 911. The newer generations, starting with the 991 have transformed more into luxury sports coupes and lost the traditional sports car characteristics. This week, the head of Porsche design himself admitted the 911 has gotten too big and he wants to figure out how to make them smaller again. And the market clearly places a premium on the 997 over the 991 and 992. And have you seen what’s happening with 996 prices!!! Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your thoughts.

    Thanks for the video. So from a person that's owned 2 Cayman (have my 2014 up for sale now), I've been shopping for my 1st 911. I've done a lot of research and heard everyone's opinion. I had it down to a beautiful 2012 991 (black like the one in the video) here in TX and a sweet 2009 Carrera S (997.2) in Portland. I had PPI's on both cars, both turned out good...as of an hour ago I gave a deposit on the 997! To me I've always thought the classic look of the 911 was the absolute best, the rear end is the sexiest of all cars. I loved the 991, it drove great, but to me, a non Porsche expert, 5'-7" tall, well it just fit me better! Can't wait for it to get here in a couple of weeks. BTW, fell in love with a 2007, but was scared of the engine!

The 991 was more of a luxury coupe, and no longer a traditional sports car. Values support that a majority of 911 buyers feel the same. As for your 2 Caymans, they too are fantastic sports cars, livelier and in some ways even more fun to drive. I assume your other Cayman was a 987? @@GTSCarLife Agreed, if you want it bad enough, it can be done. I have many friends who started as HPDE students, graduated to Instructing and have now been club racing Spec Miatas, E46 M3s, etc. A close friend, through sheer determination, went from HPDEs in his late teens, to Club Racing, to winning an AER Championship, to getting a drive in IMSA for a year. Another close friend - who was lucky, and more importantly talented enough - to go through Skip Barber at 16, race against Danica Patrick and AJ Allmendinger in the Junior series, and get a test in Indy/Cart. It's also helpful to point out that beyond spec racing, club racing, SCCA, and the wide range of semi-pro and professional racing series, there's also other opportunities to get wheel to wheel. There's also go-karting, Lemons and other lower cost categories. Finally, there is an option to rent a seat with an established team and be one of multiple drivers per car, in something like AER. And assuming, you don't crash, it's a low commitment option where you can do a race here or there and not have to buy and maintain your own car and do a full year. So, for sure, where there's a (very strong) will, and (hopefully lots of your own, family, or others) money, there is a way to make it happen. Thanks for the offer at COTA. It's certainly on my bucket list but a long drive without currently having a trailer. In the meantime, let me know if you're ever in the North East, especially at Lime Rock, which is really my home!

      I ordered a 2015 Macan S loaded with a $75,000 sticker back in March 2014. It was indeed incredible and even embarrassed some respected high end sports cars on track. But I missed the sounds of an engine behind me and I never got past the feeling that the cars abilities were all from electronics wizardry. But yes, very impressive what Porsche can do! I love my 996 C4 manual. Couldn’t get into a 997 but this makes me really want to step up to a 997 next. Agreed that it might be the peak of the 911 from a raw sports car before getting to GT car like. Then again can only comment on my own experiences. Nice assessment and video!

      Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your thoughts. My previous 911 was a 2003 996.2 C2 manual. I loved that car and drove over 95,000 miles. For daily driving the 996 was even more fun because the M96 motor just sounds so good and the chassis feels lighter. Aside from some style and materials upgrades, your 996 is really all we need and definitely a keeper. I will say on track, my GTS is worlds better. And as an instructor , I track often. But if you don’t, the 996 is perfect!
