One question 🙋 Your medakas ricefish don’t stay outdoors in the winter ?
I mean you could leave them out in the winter since they do come from Japan and they can even be under the ice if there is still water on the bottom
This was a great video :-) keep us all updated! 🎉
Wow… I am really enjoying your videos! Love the timelapses with music. Your work is offering new perspectives and creative ideas! 👍🐟
Can you show us what you did with the saran wrap to get this result? Did you just cover it and how long did you leave it? Also, how are you holding the plant in the tank, are they just free floating? Sorry that’s a lot of questions 😂
That bowl is beautiful 🤩
People would probably buy them off you
I really like ur snails! 🐌
Thanks for sharing your set up! I’m so excited about medaka atm - I’m just starting my journey too
The Planaria weren’t killing the shrimp at all? Dam I hate Planaria. Plus the meds are not so safe to use with shrimp in tank. Caution
I’m a new subber this eve. Have bred many type of fish and just got my first platinum medaka last week. A few eggs so far so wish me luck.
Drama are simply deformities with shortened bodies. It’s never great to breed these on. I have kept balloon belly rams also from stores knowing it’s not good for breeders to keep breeding n supplying them. Short body fish trade is a lil sad. But they all deserve a loving home
Those Blue plastic containers are really valuable in my area, winter proof too. I live in northern Cali at 6a zone, but I've had minnows and goldfish winter over in 100 gallons, just break the top ice so wind flow with aerate the top water. just don't feed goldfish in dead of winter, better to make aquatic life and add to water exchanges for the fry.
any tips for breeding i have clean 10gals with rice-fish i feed them daily had a ton of eggs when i first got them but have had a halt in seeing eggs on the females could it just be a dull period? fairly new to the hobby. love the videos cant wait to watch more!
Hey there! I would suggest ensuring consistency in your lighting, temperature, and feeding. There could be multiple reasons for the lack of eggs and breeding. When I transfer my fish to different tanks, they often take a pause before resuming. I've personally found that temperature and light are crucial triggers for breeding. Also, ensure you're not overfeeding them, as bloated Medaka can halt their egg production. I wish I could offer more help; it's challenging to pinpoint the issue without seeing your setup. Hope this helps!
I like the plants in the pot. I'm assuming they spawn over the plants?
Thanks! If the water is warm they do. I like to keep it cooler so that they don't until I need them to
You did well. Subscribed and liked.
What kinda pools are those ? Those are awesome
These are dog pools I found on amazon, just search dog pools and you'll find them!
how many medaka per 10 gallon tanks?
what size tank are these?
The bowls are 15 , normal tanks are 10s
i got a walstad deep substrate planted 10 g tank and im getting 8 medaka, you think they will do fine in this setup?
8 Medaka would do fine in a 10 gallon, that's about how many I prefer to have in each.
what size are these tanks brother? I got a planted 10 gallon and I am looking at stoking options
Hell of Setup you have going. Really great filtration and plenty of live plants and decor. Water looks super clean. Just wow. You can tell you put a TON of care into this
Wow, thank you for that!
beautiful setup
1st Question: Is it possible to cross-breed medakas with other types of fish? ... like killifish (maybe the Least Killifish), the Java/indonesion rice fish, or any other ones that are close in size and look? 2nd Question: Can you make videos on your favorite cleaner fish, shrimps, and snails as well as favorite plants?
I believe it's possible to cross breed different Medaka if they're related enough genetically. I did a general search and it looks like due to differences in chromosome numbers, mating behaviors, and reproductive mechanisms it may be difficult to cross them, also hybrids might be sterile or have reduced fertility, a common occurrence in interspecific crosses (as seen in cichlids) I can definitely make a video about my favorite cleaner fish, shrimp, and plants! Thanks for the suggestion. :)
@@medakadave Have you seen this guy's channel? He shows the fancy medakas in Japan. Where can I buy these in the U.S.?
My FAVORITE fish! I love the riparium tank you did!!! Any advice on how to get the red medaka from Japan? They have several blood red ones. The "red" varieties they have in the U.S. look very orange. I need to find a good online store.
Hey thank you! It can be difficult finding certain colors. I do remember seeing some reds a while ago on Aquabid.com and Getgills.com they have some U.S. sellers that I've bought from a couple times. instagram is also a really good place to find sellers, just search hashtags. goodluck to you and thanks again!
very nice 👍👍
very nice! I really like what I see 👍👍 sub for you and keep it up ✌
Nice. Those shallow tanks are called a paludarium. Basically a split between land and water. I’m a big fan of paludariums and emersed marginal plant growth.
Paludarium! That's the word I was looking for! Thanks for that info, I'm also becoming a big fan of them 🤩
Very Nice! Gretting from Medaka Manufaktur Germany
Your ludwigia repens plants are awesome!!
Really liking your project. Quick question: One of the reasons I am wanting ricefish is that I wouldn't need a heater, unless it's in a colder cellar or garage, but you are using heaters. What temperatures are you maintaining and why? Thanks.
Hey there! Thanks for the comment. I'm excited to hear you're interested in getting ricefish and I really hope you do! It's true they don't require heaters, especially since keeping them indoors provides sufficient warmth. I use heaters only to simulate the warmer summer months, which is the same reason I use high-powered grow lights on a timer to mimic summer daylight hours. This setup boosts my egg production even during the off-season. Heaters are particularly beneficial for freshly hatched fry, as they normally hatch during warmer months, and I've noticed they grow much quicker out of the fry stage in warmer temperatures. I set my heaters to the lowest setting, usually around 65-68 degrees. However, I recommend avoiding the use of a heater during the colder season unless you're aiming for egg production. The fish do need a 'break' from constant breeding as it can significantly shorten their lifespan! 🐟
Would you know if Medaka rice eats scuds or young baby scuds?
I believe the adults have a wide enough mouth to feed off of them.
@@medakadave Much appreciated for your reply. Mahalo’s & Aloha 🌴🤙 & Happy Thanks giving!!
Thanks for sharing your setup, looking forward to more updates! 👋 from Portland
My Medaka survive a thin layer of under ice outside in winter , in fact it is believed they do better with a cool spell. Only the very small fry that hatched very late in the season require special attention ( a heater ) in my experience.
Thanks for the comment! Exactly! I mention that when I'm taking my outdoor ponds down! 😁Cool right!
👍
What was the substrate before and where are all your cuties in the meantime? And what style of dirted tank, potting soil or actual pond dirt?
It was a thin layer of gravel for easier cleanup but I don't really like how it looks and aquatic soil sold in stores is really expensive imo. I've been using the "Walstad Method" if you google that, you'll see what I mean. I'm going to add a layer of top soil with pebbles holding it down. The rest of the Medaka are in the black bins and mixed in with the ponds, I'm about to start collecting eggs from them! 😁
Gotta love a good timelapse
I did not know that it's okay to feed dead fish to cherry shrimp.
They love dead fish! It's a great way to reduce waste. 😁
Shrimps are not called clean up crew for nothing.
Love those mini trout cuties!!
Groovy!! I love it! But planted that heavily in the beginning, aren't you worried you may have an absolute ton of maintenance trimming in your future?!? 🤣 ✌️
It's never a worry since I look forward to trimming, it's so satisfying to clean them up!
Love the content, great insight! Cheers from Bengaluru India!
Thanks friend!
Do you get many fry with curved spines
I've got a handful but not many, maybe 3? they normally stay in the cull pond so I don't pass it on.
Maybe build racks where you can put tanks next to eachother and use one light for a few tanks .
That's a great idea! I'll rearrange it and see how that works. Thanks for the help!
No worries I had to do it myself. Electricity isn't cheap .so i have 1 light for 3 tanks
Awesome set up. What kind of tubs are the large round ones?
Hey Thanks! they're actually dog pools. If you search Dog Pools in Amazon, you'll see the ones I use. 😁
Try using two nets one for catching and the other one to scare them towards the other net has worked for me in the past
Fantastic idea, thank you!
Woah! Great! Hi from Singapore!
Hello there!
Hello sir, i just want to ask you , is it safe to put a 50 W heater inside a plastic Tubs?
just make sure to always have enough water so it's completely submerged. I like to put substrate in the tub and put the heater in the middle on top of it. I've only had issues with plastic tubs when the water got low enough for the heater to stick out and overheated.
Thank you@@medakadave
What kind of pools are these and where can I get a few
If you search " Dog pools " on Amazon, you'll find the blue ones I use! 😄
What temperature do you see the most breeding activity? Thanks
For mine I see most breeding activity with the temps set around 65 - 68F but all my tanks above 60 get pretty active!
@@medakadave thanks - I appreciate the advice
I really do think Medaka look best viewed from above. Such beautiful fish!!
Poor lil bebe cricket 🦗😅 Did they actually eat it? I drop gnats in my tanks but never tried a cricket.
Sure did! The outdoor Medaka are super voracious!
@@medakadave I'll have to try baby crickets!
