Wild and Woolly
Norway
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 มี.ค. 2023
We live off grid in Norway, on a small farm. Here we try to grow our own food and be self-sufficient in every way. We get help plowing up the soil from woolly pigs and old north sheep helps with forestry and scrub eating. As far as possible, all plants and animals have a function, and we are constantly working to increase the degree of good ecological interaction.
We make videos of our daily life with plants and animals, and small and large projects. We are not trained in agriculture, but we love to learn and enjoy everything we discover/stumble upon along the way.

DIY Drop Spindle from Scratch + Spinning Dog Hair into Yarn + Crocheting a Hat
I make drop spindles from scratch using branches from the forest, spin dog hair into yarn, and crochet a hat from the finished yarn.
We have a wonderful long-haired white shepherd who sheds a lot. Every year, we end up with a big bag of beautiful white dog wool in the fall. Previously, I’ve spun yarn on a spinning wheel and knitted mittens. Now, I’m taking on the challenge of making drop spindles and spinning yarn entirely without fancy tools, then crocheting a hat from dog fur.
I’ve filmed the entire project, from branch to yarn, in hopes of inspiring others to spin yarn from their own pet’s wool, hair, or fur. It’s surprisingly easy, completely free, and actually quite fast!
DIY drop spindle, spinning dog hair, homemade yarn, pet fur yarn, crochet hat, dog wool, spinning yarn without tools, handmade spindle, shepherd dog wool, crafting with pet hair, spinning projects, natural yarn, eco-friendly yarn crafting.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw the title of the video. You are such a creative person. To make yarn - ok, but to make it out of dog's hair, this is something unusual 😮 Hope you are warm and cosy, thanks!
Thank you so much. All of us are keeping warm. Hope you are too. We thought it was a fun project to make. Glad you liked it ❤️😊
@wildandwoolly It was a fun project but even sth more. This is another time I feel that you have this personality of the inventor and so my sincere congrats 🥇
I'm blushing here😅 Thank you so much. I just thought I'd "prove" that you don't need to buy a lot of equipment to be able to spin your pet's hair. It's so easy that even I can do it😂 Have a great week🙂
I have actually rolled some of my own hair and pets between my hands and it formed a piecr of wool...never tried this yet...
❤️❤️❤️
Hello Siv,I hope all is ok? If I log in again to instagram, can you send me your postal address for a christmas card. A storm here today and my mum is coming up to see me. I must milk the goats soon,Love and hugs,Fiona
Hey, hope the storm isn't too bad and you have a nice visit today❤️ I've written on Instagram. Hugs😊
@wildandwoolly Thank you Siv,I will reinstall instagram when my mum has gone home again,,warm hugs,Fiona
Hope you have a lovely visit ❤️❤️❤️
Always love the perfect fit between the music and the picture content and ⚘ you do this magic 😊

Grate idea😀 Beautiful, for free and early to make a lot of. 😊🐣
Thank you! 😊
Lucky you, not to have cartons 😊 Seriously, a very nice item and so practical for the kitchen 🐤🐤🐤
Thank you so much❤️🥰The hens lay fewer eggs now in the winter, but there are always some eggs.. and they will be very safe and stable in the new egg tray😀
wwwwwww😮 🥰😊🐔💚 Thank you very 🧡💛💜👍🙏
🙂🙂Hope you got inspired 🙂 You are very welcome 💚
This is incredible that this sweet guy survives Norwegian winters 😊
Yes, isn't he handsome🙂 He tolerates the cold well as long as he stays dry. ❤️
thank you for your videos! What kind of breed are your sheeps ?Are they all gammelnorsk spaelsau? So lovely ! I thought the wool is to hard, like german Heidschnucken ? In an older video you said that you spin and knit it, so wonderful ! I do so,too. Greetings from North Germany/ Nordnorge
🙂🐑Thank you very much🙂 We have Gammelnorsk spalsau/ villsau mix. I don't know if the wool quality is similar to the German breed, I have never tried spinning wool from other sheep breeds😅. The wool is of good quality, but some will probably find it somewhat coarse. But it is absolutely fine for outerwear, socks - sweaters and the like. So nice that you have watched our videos🙂
I love your accent, so cute
Thank you very much, it's very nice to hear 🙂😀
Thank you so much for showing us the homestead being prepared for winter. A question : how long does an avarage lamb stay with you before being butchered - did I get it right - from early spring to late autumn? It is gteat to see you so content 😊 you have worked so hard and we have pure pleasure watching ready superb materials🥂
Oooooh thank you so much❤️ It means a lot 🙂 ❤️We usually have the lambs from when they are born in about April until they reach reproductive age in October. This year we have exchanged the ram with a neighbour, so we have kept our girl lambs.
That is so cool! What does your husband do to contribute to the daily maintenance of the home or animals?
Thank you very much😊 we have very divided work tasks, but in relation to the daily operation of the homestead, it is my full-time job. Fortunately, we can enjoy the fruits of our joint efforts now and then 🙂

Wow, you are a chemists 😊 I rush to check my area but probably it is a bit to late this year to find this "sugar cane". Congratulations ! Great job 🥯
😂❤️ Thank you so much 😊 It really has a great vanilla like taste 😊 Wishing you a good weekend.
@@wildandwoolly After watching your film I checked our Wikipedia. These plants were used as medicines and aromatics for alcohols. Good weekend to both of you, too 🍖🧀🥨
😀Meadowsweet is truly an exciting herb. Yes, here, it’s perhaps best known as an additive/spice in mead, 🍺but it has also been traditionally used as a pain reliever and fever reducer, due to its salicylic acid content. We have mostly used willow bark for this purpose, but in terms of flavor, meadowsweet is definitely a winner!😊
Here are the recipe: Gluten-Free Cookies with Potatoes: Ingredients: - 400 g boiled potatoes - 200 g sugar - 200 g butter - 2 eggs - 2 tsp baking powder - 2 tsp homemade meadowsweet sugar Instructions: 1. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. 2. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. 3. Stir in the baking powder and meadowsweet sugar. 4. Add the potatoes, mashing them well into the dough to achieve a smooth consistency. 5. Place spoonfuls of the dough onto a baking sheet, leaving plenty of space between them as they will spread. 6. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15-20 minutes.

What is the American name for the plant
It is meadowsweet in American (Filipendula ulmaria) 😊
Great short, really 🏅
Thank you ❤️

I am cleaning the garden, too. Still have carrots and parsley in the ground. Do you plant garlic? mid October is usual time for our climate. Today I planted hardneck variety. Wishing you warm, long winter. Though darkness is just one step ahead 😮 You have made a lovely feast 🍧 I do not know why but it seems yt- bers love watching foods 🥫 Thank you so much for another great episode ❤
So great that you are having success with garlic, we have tried to plant it both in autumn and early spring (when there is still frost at night) but do not think we have had any great success. The tiny ones we got this year are in now, but they will probably go out again soon...hope the 2nd generation gives a better yield. 🙂
Thank you very much for watching and always sending nice messages 🙂😊I only speak for us, but we are easily captivated by watching people cook both because it goes so fast on the screen and it is easy to get new ideas. Then we just watched a bit of old episodes of "river cottage" and it was so cozy with the little cooking sequences in between that we were inspired to try it in our videos as well 🙂
We have these guys here central Poland doing the same noise 😊
Maybe it's the same ones that are with you now 😅
Awww GROSS!! I would have never thought an emollient I been using for decades came from animals hair???? How is that even possible? Why does it have it? Uuugh!
You learn all your life😅 It's probably because it's a very effective and natural emulsifier that it's so widespread in skin products😊 In sheep, the lanolin ensures good skin and wool health, so it must have been some clever people a long time ago who thought that maybe it was good for people too😊
@@wildandwoolly it's an emulsifier too?! Wow I am learning something new every day. I'm going to have to give it a try.
In a different video, you have about 36 True Potato Seed varieties, how did you get the seeds for all these different varieties?😊
They are from our own TPS from two years before, so it takes a few years.😊
(The year before this video)
Hi Siv, im curious what kind of watering system you have for your pigs? 😊
The old waterbucket system😅😊
@wildandwoolly ohh wow, ours seem to like tipping it over. Now we dug a bucket into the ground 😅😆
Hehe yes they do, everything that can be knocked over, will be knocked over😅 What has worked best for us is to fill the water in a large wooden trough screwed to long wooden beams. Or a mega heavy cast iron pot. They manage to knock it over, but they have experienced once that it came close to the wire when they knocked it over and then they got a shock, something they remember very well, so it will mostly be left alone now.
So wonderful! You are bringing us on ideas for how to tackle our sheep come spring. Do you ever have issues with wool lice?
We haven't had any problems with it but we have sprinkled them in with diatomaceous earth at at least once a year. A neighbor who also has sheep says that she uses something she drips into their necks once or twice a year and that is enough, but it is on prescription. It's so nice to shear sheep by hand, you can look forward to it 🙂🙂
We have not started the fire though will be very soon 😊
Is Norway a good country to live off-grid?
It's a complicated question. We think it is, but it really depends on where in the country you live, as most municipalities require that you have connected sewer and water. Fortunately, electricity is voluntary everywhere as far as we know.
Te agradesco mucho ❤

Amazing! I had to giggle so much, but i felt along with your fear! Pressure canning seems very scary to me too. But one day I'll have a go at it too.😊
😂 It's an absolutely fantastic way to preserve food but I was so scared this first time 😂 It's a bit of a shame that there is so little equipment for pressure canning in Norway, but it's fun and try and fail a little and learn a lot of new things 🙂 Hope you get tried it in the future 🙂
So dreamy! You have such a wealth of knowledge 🥰 Your food looked delicious! I wonder, do you have a stable house temperature in winter? We heat with firewood and if the fire dies it gets cold at night, it has been making seed starting inside difficult for me. The summer has been so busy, but now with the colder weather I'll be watching back all your videos🤩
🙂❤️So kindly said 🙂The longer I live this lifestyle and the more I learn, the more I realize how little I know😂 We have a very well insulated house, so even in many minus degrees the temperature doesn't drop much at night. But a wood-fired greenhouse.. that is the long-term dream. Hope you have a less busy time ahead and have good health with you into the cold season.
I m getting so hungery, the plates looks soooo good.😊
Home grown is the best😊😉🌱
