Superintendent Pattison and the Scarborough Police 1865-1898 by Keith Johnston
William Pattison, an experienced police officer, came to Scarborough from Beverley in 1865 to take charge of the town's police force. A very strong and determined individual, he achieved much for the local force and the town itself in a long period as superintendent of the local police, before his apparently sudden resignation in 1898. This talk examines many aspects of Scarborough's police force under Pattison, including the variety of its work and some of the people it dealt with. Pattison's downfall, and its connection to a local tragedy, is also explained. All of this is presented in the context of Scarborough's development and history in the later nineteenth century.
Keith Johnston is secretary of the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society and one of its vice-presidents, and also editor of the society's “Transactions”. He taught History at Scarborough Sixth Form College for the best part of four decades. Keith has long been very interested in Scarborough’s past, particularly its development as a seaside resort, and now in retirement he is able to devote much time to the study of local history, as well as the growth of tourism in the Lake District, war memorials and modern historical pageants. He has been researching the history of Scarborough, including its police force and its criminals, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for many years.

Before the Bombardment: MI5 and the German Invasion of Britain
มุมมอง 305ปีที่แล้ว
The bombardment of the North-East coast by German warships, on 16 December 1914, is often seen as something wholly unexpected. But in some ways the British were well prepared for it, since they had spent much of the previous decade imagining a German attack, and experiencing the horror of a German invasion of Britain through novels, plays, and films. Fear of invasion went hand in hand with a co...

My dads last name is Ayton we have been told that our roots come from Scotland and that our family used to have a big pink castle we thought it wasn’t true because he’s Jamaican but our DNA test says we are Scottish and I now see it wasn’t a tall tale

Hi i have been researching and metal detecting at aldby park and buttercrambe for 3-4 years now and i am very thankful that people are actually working on the grounds and the earthworks. I also believe i have found a building that has began to pretrude out the ground. I dont know how to describe the location but it is in aldby park. Around the building i have found old pottery old nails and bits of broken glass. I believe the building to be around 1600s

Very interesting. I'd never heard of your society. The Astronomer Fred Hoyle, a Bingley lad, (Steady-state theory) wrote a book on the North Yorkshire Moors ice-age geology. It is heartening to see folk researching their home turf.
