Norway by Motorhome 2023 - Hardanger to Home
We started the last leg of our Norway trip by driving the Hardanger Scenic Route alongside beautiful fjords, waterfalls and high passes. Storm Hans arrived soon after, and we spent three days sheltering from the heavy rains in Røldal before heading on down the Ryfyke Scenic Route. We ended with the Jæren Scenic Route along the South West Coast and our final stop in Kristiansand where we met old Norwegian friends for dinner and took our ferry to Denmark. The weather was not great on this stage and we were ready to be heading home… more than a little sad to be leaving this amazing country, but with so many fantastic memories of our time here.
Then we had a thousand miles of driving to do in only three days so we took the 8:30 ferry from Kristiansand to Hirtshals in Denmark and 2 1/2 hours later were heading off down through Denmark to Germany and parking for the night just short of Hamburg. Next long day of driving brought us to Southern Netherlands where we stopped just before Eindhoven. Our final day took us through Belgium to Calais in northern France where we stocked up on wine and boarded the Eurotunnel back to the UK. Three hours of driving on the left again saw us reaching home just before midnight. Tired of driving, but happy to be home.

We're back in one of the most beautiful places we've ever been, Norway's stunning Lofoten Islands in the Arctic Circle. It's a bit busier than where we've been in the far North, but for good reason. I just discovered your Norwegian videos. I love Norway; I have been twice now to Tromsø. I will be visiting again for a 90 visa, but no vehicle. I will explore the Troms og Finnmark by bus and ferries. BTW, I thought I banged my head in my monitor when the drone hit the rock, glad it survived. And, like you I am a gazzle in my mind, but a geriatric body! Though I may not visit such places as you two, I do appreciate you sharing the beauty that is Norway! Tusen takk!

      @@travellerinterrupted2519 On my first trip in March 2022 I was smitten! Though way above the Arctic Circle it was all white, and I was surprised that though cold -20C it wasn't as cold as the same latitude in Alaska -57C! And I discovered how extensive the bus and ferry service is; and the fjords are ice free due to the Gulf Stream. On that visit my Norwegian friend, with whom I am staying, took a 3 1/2 hour ferry trip to Harstad; I got the thrill of seeing the magnificent landscape in Winter! In Harstad we went to the Trondenes Historic Museum and the northern most medieval kirk still in use, plus the museum had an interesting display of Viking history and the sad history of the Nazi occupation. Then when I returned in July/August of 2024 I was blown away by the change in the climate! Flowers everywhere and lush greenery. We took a 45 minute bus ride to Ersfjorden that was magical! Reindeer walking by me on the road, waterfalls and incredible scenery only a short inexpensive bus ride from Tromsø. Even a short walk from my friends apartment brough us to the end of the island to a beach where adults and children were frolicking in 27C weather. I make notes for my next trip to expand my horizons. I highly recommend Troms og Finnmark.

    I was in Tromsø in August 2023 and it was 27C. We took a city bus to Ersfjord, similar but narrower then the fjord with the island of Husøy; I think it was the same two reindeer that walked in front of our bus as in the opening of your video! I love having reindeer pølse at the Raketten Bar & Grill and enjoying conversation with a friend, tourists, and locals on the outside deck! I will be back this September. Thanks for sharing!

    Great videos, I am planning road trip to Norway this June, and preparation for that brings me to your vlog. A lot of places and beautiful country. I am planning to travel with electric car, so could be more stressful finding places to charge on this scenic routes. One possibility is to charge over night when camping, but some camp sites doesn't allow that, what is your experience? On each start of the video you have animation depicting the route covering, how did you made that? Thanks.

      Hi, Norway has a huge number of electric vehicles on the road so they must have a good charging infrastructure though we have not used it ourselves. We use an App called TravelBoast for the animations, it’s pretty easy to use and the basic version is free. Have a great trip, it’s a beautiful country with lovely people.

    We've just watched all six episodes of your travels from the UK through Greece and back home which was super interesting and well filmed. We're thinking of doing the same thing in our motorhome from Whitby in the UK because my girlfriend comes from Athens with an apartment in Corinth also it's a very nice little town with an amazing coastline to Patra where you were I like your motorhome because the garage gives you the space for the scooter. I've currently got a Hymer with an island bed, but I'm thinking of changing it to twin beds and a larger garage for a scooter like yours. Was your Burner Motorhome the best model for space from your research for your scooter making it was it easy to get in etc? Thank you for the great film, Alan and Rena.

I have tried the companies listed on Auto pass for example Flyte I’m struggling with this company as o do not understand the part where they ask what euro rating is it then list loads of numbers that mean nothing to me if there was just a box say for euro 6 I would understand. I’m struggling with another firm I changed to English then as I go to order a tag it’s in Norwegian. Can I ask who you used for your trip ? Many thanks

      Hi Paul, I remember also having some trouble and ended up using SkyttelPASS which worked very well . I was also able to set up a ferry pass through them but struggled to make the initial payment to the ferry part, it had to be a bank transfer rather than a credit card, so didn’t get the big ferry discounts. We used a lot of ferries so I really should have persevered and saved some money.

    Hi. My husband and I have just binge watched (over 2 evenings) all the episodes of this trip! Really enjoyed it and immediately subscribed and looking forward to watching others . A Q pls. We have a similar van to you - what scooter do you have (make/model). Do you need to do anything to the bike to get it in and out (wing mirrors?) of the garage. We saw on one video you have a ramp - is it easy to get the bike in and out of the van? Do you show on any of your vids getting the bike in and out of the van? we are interested to see how easy (or otherwise) it might be.

    • @travellerinterrupted2519
      @travellerinterrupted2519 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, so glad you enjoyed the vlogs, we loved that trip. The scooter is a Honda SH Mode 125, which we chose because it is only 116kg and has more power than some of the slightly lighter 110cc scooters. We are very happy with it, perfect for all the local trips and bowls along happily at 50mph with both us us on there. We added the top box so we can lock both helmets away when we arrive and it’s very useful, and I feel more secure with something behind me ( not that I’ll ever fly off the back under the acceleration lol). We do have to remove the mirrors to put it in the van garage but that’s very quick and easy. It is easy to get in and out up the ramp, the only exception is if the ground is uneven, maybe with a chock under the ramp side rear wheel and instead of wheeling it up to the height of the garage floor you’re wheeling it up to garage floor plus a foot. But that only catches you out the first time, then you know to drive off the chocks before putting the scooter away. The scooter was a game changer and we love it. We didn’t take it to Norway this summer because you can pretty much take the van anywhere there, but in Southern Europe or the UK with tiny roads and no parking in quaint little places, it’s brilliant. Hope that helps, and happy travels. PS please just ask if you have any follow up questions.

      Hi, there were no road tolls in Denmark, only bridge tolls and you can pay these with a card at the toll booths. For Norway, the road tolls are electronic so you have to sign up with a toll company before you go, we used SkyttelPASS and the road and ferry tolls came through every week on an email invoice and debited direct to a card. We paid for the ferries the same way through SkyttelPASS, you can pay by card but much quicker and easier and you get a 10% discount with the SkytellPASS. As you board the ferry, they scan your registration number to check you have an agreement and then everything through to billing and payment is done automatically. You can also set up a Ferry pass if you pay £300 up front and get 40% discount on ferries instead of 10%, we should have done this but I had problems making the up front payment. If you want to see the most scenic places, you will use a lot of ferries!

    I have found your videos truly inspirational. I have been contemplating a trip to the same area of Greece in my VW Campervan for some time now . Having watched your videos has given me the confidence to go for it in September. Thank you so much.

    Very much enjoying following your trip down through Norway. We are setting off from the UK later this month heading up through Norway from Kritiansand and then back down wherever the whim takes us. Thanks for posting I can't imagine that editing these videos is an easy or quick task. If I can ask a quick couple of questions 1) Have you managed to find places to dispose of your cassette very easy 2) We have refillable LPG and hopefully the correct adapter, I don't know if you are refilling has that been easy to find?

      Hi, so glad you are enjoying, we mainly do the videos so we can watch them back one day when we are too old to travel but very happy if others can enjoy them too. In answer to your questions, Norway is a dream for motorhoming, there are loads of excellent and free service points for black, grey, and freshwater… park4night has them all and with a little planning a day or two ahead its easy to manage. We use refillable LPG and again we have found it easy here. The app myLPG.eu has the locations and apart from the very far North ( above Alta) there’s good availability. We have two big cylinders so typically go three or four weeks before looking for a top up but have had no issues. Good timing by the way, although it’s by no means crowded up here, popular spots like Lofoten do get full of tourists in July and August so shoulder season is a great idea. Bon Voyage, we can’t recommend Norway highly enough.

      @travellerinterrupted2519 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      PS if you come back through Finland you won’t get LPG there so fill up beforehand.

      Many thanks for the info. Going north we are travelling up through Denmark and then Hirtshals to Kristiansand, coming back who knows, we literally have nothing planned some of it is going to be weather dependant. Sadly we only have 2 X 6 Kg gaslow cylinders (stupid Autotrail gas locker) but off grid in Scotland in May they were good for about 2 1/2 weeks before they needed refilling. I'm a bit of a Norway addict but a moho newbie hopefully we can cover all we want to do. Thanks & cheers Steve
