What happened to the cats?

I was happy to find your video after a long search because I have a very similar situation with an old mulberry tree in my garden. I was hesitant about whether I had done the right thing. The tree hadn’t been pruned for years, and it had developed water shoots that grew very tall, almost reaching above the second floor of the building. Most of the mulberry fruits over the past years grew on these high branches, making it impossible to harvest them unless they fell to the ground. After heavy pruning and topping, the tree now looks very much like yours in the video. My concern is whether these small, thin branches on the sides will grow thicker over time. Is it also possible for new side branches to start forming? Thank you!

Thanks for posting this video. I always appreciate the truth so I don't make the same mistake. I've never planted one for the reasons you state and show but am going to give one a try in a 20-gal root trapper pot on a stepping stone to contain the roots and see if that works. The fruit looks good!

I prefer seeded watermelons, but seldom see them in stores. I found one, and after eating it, there were a few seeds left in the dish. I rinsed water in it and tossed it outside on an area where I clean horse stalls. I gave no thought to whether they would come up or not. But shortly, there were about 4 or 5 plants that germinated. I didn't do much for them....just water once in awhile. Lo! I have 10 watermelons! The first one I picked was about 3 weeks ago, and it wasn't perfectly ripe. I have put off picking my next biggest melon, which is pretty large. I checked with your hints and I believe it is ready. For sure I am growing some next year. Forty years ago, I grew Sugar Baby watermelons. They were the best little watermelons, and I am going to grow some of those, and also some big ones. We jave very sandy soil here, and they are grown commercially around here. Thanks for your video!

putting your melons in black plastic pots?

No, it does NOT look good! I would NEVER buy a watermelon that looks like that on the inside. It's not RED ENOUGH! I almost DEMAND that my store-bought watermelons be SPLIT IN HALF so I can SEE the inside coloring. THAT'S how you know if it's sweet!

The brown tendril is not a foolproof way to tell if your melon is ripe for picking. Having a brown tendril is one indicator that its developing sugars. But not THE indicator its ready . Sadly you missed a deliciously ripe melon by about a week. But this is how you learn. I encourage you to save seeds from your fruit and veggies and grow them again next year.

Yeaup my first season growing them too and the thump and yellow spot is nonsense. That tendril is spot on. Everytime the tendril was brown I cut into it and it was ripe EVERY SINGLE TIME. 🎉I hope this helps someone

That is not ripe

Didn’t work for mine Mine tendril was completely brown and almost broken off and it was no where near ripe I almost cried when I cut into it and it wasn’t ready but it’s a chance we gotta take

The dried tendril only tells that the melon is maturing, it is not an indicator of ripeness. The best method is the thumping method; as soon as you get the dull "thump", the melon is ripe. Of course, if you miss a melon and give it a thump two weeks after it was ripe, it will still give the dull "thump", but it will be over-ripe. Glad to see others giving their opinions on methods, but the "thump" is the one I use with 99% success.

8.9.2024 I went watermelon this year and have wasted 3 beauties that I thought were ready, but they were not :(. I must go out and check my tendrils!

oh wonderful, somebody gave me a water melon... no tendril test available of coarse. Got another method?

I was just at Walmart watching a group of people all like knocking on watermelons and holding two at a time to see which one's heavier and they were all trying to give each other advice on on knocking on it and all that crap bottom line is the only way to tell if a watermelon's ready or not is by the stem

My watermelons are that size but dark green. Is something wrong with it? No stripes.

Absolute best way to tell if it is ripe, the tendril has to be brown, AND if you hook your finger under the vine going into the melon and pull up if it pops off easily the melon is ripe. If you have to tug pretty hard don't break it, it is still ripening. Best way right there!!

But what about when I’m at Walmart. We don’t get to see the tendril. I usually look for the yellow spot and around the stem if it’s brown ,

How often do you water? And what zone is this? I just planted one (southern Cali) not sure how often I should be watering.

Mine has 2 tendrils one is brown and the othere one is green i cant tell if its ripe or need more time
