Nazi Germany was ten years ahead of the US in 1940 how much would it have been in the 50s, 60s, 70s etc much more than in this film.

The divergent moment was the failure of the D-day landings? By that point it was already over, it was just a question of how long. They really should have picked something earlier. The Dunkirk evacuation failing, and Britain making peace would have made a lot more sense.

A very good adaptation of an intriguing novel.

So, the point is what that could have mattered 20 years later?. The film does not show what happens after the revelations, maybe the AU.S. restricts the degree of the relations with Germany at best.

He was 74 when he stroked out and shat his pantaloons in his study were he was left to slowly die overnight out of fear that whomever breached his quarters would be shot like the last guards that made the mistake of checking on his well being 😂

This movie has it backwards! The SS (Schutzstaffel) held higher authority than the Gestapo, as the Gestapo was considered a sub-branch of the SS and fell under its overall command, particularly through the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) which oversaw both the Gestapo and other security forces within the Nazi regime; essentially, the SS was the overarching organization with broader power and control over the Gestapo.

A minor masterpiece, but many will find the idea of a heroic SS officer as deeply offensive. I have to confess as well that I found the ending too rushed and unconvincing. High level meetings between national leaders are usually carefully planned, considered, and choreographed such that the fictional President Joseph Kennedy would probaby have gone ahead with the meeting with Hitler for the sake of peaceful relations and economic development. The death of the Jews would probably have been seen at that point in this imaginary version of events as a mere "detail" of the war, just as the real life Jean- Marie Le Pen describes it. There would also have been a lot of popular press, books and magazines and films in the USA extolling the rebirth of Germany under Hitler. No doubt David Irving's "histories"would have been best sellers. Many right wing Americans would have visited Germani and returned with positive stories. Isolationist "America First" Americans who wanted to stay out of the war and blamed it on the Jews (e,g., Charles Lindberg) would have felt vindicated by FDR's faillure to defeat Hitler and pressed for normalization with Hitler Normalized relations with Hitler's Reich by then would also be seen as highly desirable in the struggle against the Communist Soviet Union, which the film refers to. Consider also the real life Operation Paperclip in which former Nazis were recruited by the USA at the end of the war to help build Americas scientific and technological efforts. One hardly needs to be reminded of the numerous alliances and relationships which the USA formed during the Cold War with various strong men in the Third World to fight Communism. Never underestimate the cynicism and, from their point of view, practicality, of politicians. That said, the death of March (Rutger Hauer) because of the unwitting betrayal by his son is alll to believable. This film would make for an interesting double feature alongside "The Lives of Others" about the East German surveillance society. P.S. The cast and their performances were wonderful. Special praise for the role played by Jean Marsh. Her character was deeply disturbing because it reflects the real life attutudes of too many people. And, lastly, even today many Americans today would dearly wish the USA looked like Germania. I doubt that many Americans in 2024 really care if 80 years ago Jews "went up in smoke" because they view it as ancient history. As Hitler himself said in his own time "Who today remembers the Armenians?"

In attendance were Goring, Himmler, Heydrich, Eichman, Mueller, Hess, Ribbentrop, Goebbles, Baldur von Schirach, Fieldmarshalls Manstein, Rommel, Dietrich, Donitz. At the meeting, Hitler discussed what would be the future course of actions for the German Reich. He began picking the new regime's leadership. Himmler would stay in command of the SS but in an expanded role. Heydrich was made Reich Commissar of Muscovy, Mueller was made Director of RSHA, Eichman was made head of the Gestapo, Göring was promoted to President of the Reich. Goebbels would still head the propaganda office of the Reich. Schirach would still head the Hitler Youth. Rommel would be made Chief of the General Staff. Dönitz would still head the Kriegsmarines. "Society" Life in the Fatherland is grand. The Reich's society is culturally dominant. The German population of the world is at 150 million people. "News Media" The press, the radio and the television are tightly controlled. The media is regulated to promote Nazi principles and ideologies. "Education" Academic life is male-dominated. Although it is possible for a woman to have an academic career. School is the way with which the German Reich indoctrinates and controls the citizenry, starting in its youth. The school year occupies most of the calendar year. The Hitler Jugend and Bund Deutscher Mädel are compulsory for children in the German Reich. German academics have key roles in the processes of racial ideology at the German Institute for Racial Studies, part of Friedrich Wilhelm University. The German Institute for Foreigners charged with instructing those foreigners who fortunately were classed as "Aryans", such as the Argentines in the German language and culture. "Economy" Germany has a high standard of living. Unemployment rate was very low. European satellite states export high-quality consumer goods to Germany. German companies and organizations dominate the economies of the axis and occupied nations. Mercedes-Benz & Volkswagen are thriving. Zeiss produces the Reich's computers and software. The Reichsmark is the dominant world currency and is legal tender in the Greater German Reich, but most of the Reich's member states, territories, and allies have national currencies. Since the Reich dictates favorable exchange rates, the Reichsmark is readily accepted and apparently welcomed even in places in which it is not legal tender. "Military" The German war machine is the largest in the world, composed of 250 active divisions and 66 reserve. The Germans possess the greatest tanks in the world i.e. Maus IIIs, Panther IIIs, Landkruezer P. 1000 Ratte, (Battleship on wheels, Tiger IVs and the best aircraft i.e. the ME 270 (fighter jets), Lz 140 (Night Owl assault blimps) Lz 201 (Aircraft Carrier of the Skies), Horton Ho IXB (Night Hunter). The German surface fleet was also growing stronger with the development of new ship designs i.e. Tripitz IV, Bismarck II. Each German man between the ages of 17 to 30 must serve 3 years in the Wehrmacht and then may leave the service or continue being in the Wehrmacht. "Führer's Palace" new fortress like mansion is built for the Führer's which is guarded by a division from the LSSAH which is barracked near the Palace. "Soldier's Hall" commemorates the German Reich's military might by exhibiting the gliders that were used to invade Britain, the first Panzer IV to enter the Kremlin, and the railroad carriage in which Imperial Germany surrendered to the Allies in 1918, at Compiègne, France, and in which France surrendered to Nazi Germany in 1940. Because Berlin is populous, public transport (rapid transit trains, U-Bahn, and commuter railroads) is well developed; one rail station is the "South Station," near government offices. In the occupied zones of France the Germans have set up military governments to control the various cities and country sides. The south of England and Wales is divided into military-economic commands directly administered by the German Army. European Charter The creation of a single economic system and political alliance in Europe had been on the mind of Hitler since the end of the war. He called a meeting of all the western and northern European nations on April 1st, 1950. The countries met in Geneva. The countries that were in attendance were the following i.e. Italy, Portugal, Spain, Vichy France, Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland and Finland. The EC countries are nominally free nations under their own governments and leaders but with limited sovereignty who are politically subordinate to Germany in all but name. This is symbolized by the Nazi flag flown over the EC headquarters being twice as large as those of the other member states. The Balkan states i.e. Croatia, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Albania and Serbia remain independent outside of the EC, but are still subject to German rule. The Germans interfere in their internal affairs, especially in applying racial ideology. In the east, Poland is still ruled as a colony by the General Government. Great fictional movie! in my top 100 detective movies of all time. still have it in VHS. the setting described in the beginning of this film is a possible way time could have unfolded. Either way, the atrocities would have exposed themselves. But with the invention of the A-bomb I believe it would have been dropped on Berlin as well. The USA would have used it to bring the war to an end if the outcome would have turned out that way. either way hitler 's body would have been burned. food for thought? Thank goodness it didn't happen, we would have lost so much culturaly, music and art would have lost so much. People we know today would not have existed. Our culture is far better off as a result.
