Metal Detecting in the Netherlands! Finding some Silver Coins!
In this months episode you can see me find a nice handful of silver coins! I start my adventure searching for the lost city of Sier on the Dutch Island of Ameland. Sier was taken by the sea about 300 years ago. I try to find some coins or relics on the beach of the Island. Later I move inland to search on the normal fields there. On the meadows around an old village over there I found coins from all over the world! I found a 18th Century copper coin from Spain, a silver coin from the Austrian Netherlands and even a coin from the colonial period of the Netherlands; Nederlands Indië! I also found a 19th Century silver dime from emperor Wilhelmina, and a 17th Century Silver coin from the Dutch city of Kampen.
Later back home, I started of with a broken Small long Brooch from the Anglo Saxon period. Moments later I found a silver medieval coin, it was bend unfortunately. But at home I managed to straighten the coin again! And as it turned out to be, it is a very coin from Stavoren. Koenraad van Swaben, 11th Century. And Then I found another silver dime, but this time it was from emperor Willem II, 1849. And the final find was a 17th Century Silver Stuiver from Groningen and Ommelanden.
I had a pretty good month! For those of you who don't already know me, my name is Mark.I live and metal detect in the Northern part of the Netherlands.
I try to find Roman and Medieval coins and relics with my Minelab Manticore metal detector! I try to make a video each month!

In this months Metal Detecting video you can see me find some real nice things. I start of with a silver Roman coin, a denarius from Emperor Antoninus Pius dated between 138 and 161 A.D. Those were the Glory Days of the Roman Empire. Later I found a tiny medieval Coin hoard dated between 1175 and 1225 A.D. These silver coins were stuck to each other and I didn't want to damage them and I have s...

How to clean Roman coins. 👍
Love it !
Thanks! 🙏
Magical Fingers!
😬👍
Thanks Lee! 😎👍🍀
Those are really extraordinary. I’m so glad you found them. You’re doing an incredible job preserving history.
Sooo Beautiful Coins🍀👍Congratulations!
Thank you! 🙏
Thanks! 😅👍 Balen van die gesp! 😯
Hello, I really like your channel. Artifacts from the Iron and Bronze Ages as well as Roman influences and the Middle Ages are very impressive. Best regards
Thank you! That’s wonderful to hear! 😀👍
Niiice 👍🏽👍🏽 I used to work on the summer in the island of Texel at the skydive center. Paracentrum Texel
Thanks! 👍 There also is a skydive center on Ameland!
That 11th century coin is beautiful. Great video ❤
Thanks! 😃👍
Key hole plate or escutcheon ..Great work there, I'm always fascinated by the closeness of some of the Dutch finds and our own Anglo Saxon ones, I wonder if that's the experience in Northern France, Dave
Thanks! In the medieval period there was a lot of trade between England and the northern part of the Netherlands. I’ve found a hand full of medieval coins and even some Anglo Saxon brooches over here. 👍
Leuke video weer Mark.
Amazing old coin finds! Amazed they are so well preserved! Cheers, John. UK.
Thanks John! That’s wonderful to hear! 😎👍🍀
Dankje! Mooi om te horen! 👍

Wow, that’s really beautiful. You cleaned it up well. Great job!

Awesome finds! I’m always in awe of the finds that you save! Your collection must be amazing!
Thanks! 🙏 Yeah, I could start a museum now…! 😄
The giveaway in this video is closed! Thanks everybody for participating! The winners are Armin and Stan! Congratulations! 🎉
Sigh….not my name, but always fun to participate.
Congrats to the winners, hopefully next time for me 🤞
Awh no!😢 I’ve been in hospital🙈 Hope you’ll do another giveaway for a Roman coin🙏🏻 my 9yr old is obsessed with numastics he has Autism & adhd he struggles with so much in day to day life but his knowledge on history and coinage is unbelievable! He’s still waiting for his first Roman❤️ Great video as always buddy!
Thanks man! 👍 Give me your address by DM on Instagram or X. I’ll send you something nice! 😃👍
I tried to find one for years living in England, no luck. I live in Ireland now and I don't think I'm going to find one here either 😢 I'd love to win it, fingers crossed 🤞
Thanks! 🙏
Because I have never even seen one until now.
Thank you! 🙏
I’d love to have it as I am a big coin collector of foreign and American coins, I’m currently studying history to become a history museum curator, and I also metal detect and would love to have a piece of ancient history!
Thanks! 🙏
I have just finished my bachelors in History with a minor in Greek and Roman Studies. My focus was ancient numismatics. My graduation gift from my family was a coin cabinet - now I need coins to fill it with!
Thank you! 😎👍🍀
I am a teacher and I bring in my collection of artifacts to let the kids touch history. I would love to add to the collection to encourage a love of history!💜
Thank you! 🙏
Those were beautiful finds. Every find, is a treasure. Really enjoyed your adventure.
Thanks! You are absolutely right, every find is a treasure! 😎👍
Very nice finds ! If I will win one I will make it a gift for my love because in August it's his birthday ! Thank you and good luck with these awesome finds !
Thank you! 🙏
Nice video as always 🎉 so in my region of Germany there are no roman coins thats the reason I would be happy about the romans
Thank you! No Roman coins in your part in Germany? I thought they could be find all over (Western) Europe… 😎👍
@@Medieval_Digger not everywhere the Rhein is a natural border
@Jarik_van_Diek Yes, but there was a lot of trade across the board the border and a lot of German Tribes joined the Roman army and later in the early medieval period they even used Roman coins. I live 100/150 kilometers from the Limes but there enough Roman coins hete for us to find. 😎👍
Thanks! 😎👍🍀
I hope i win the give away. As a metal detectorist from Brazil the chances of finding a roman coin are zero to none 😅😅 just last week i thought my chances of finding one would become real, i had a job lined up in Italy and was excited to go, 2 days before my flight the guy i was in contact with canceled my job. I'm still heart broken about it. I sold some of the coins from my collection to raise some money to help with travel expenses. Not cool... So a roman coin would help get my collection back on track in style and raise my spirits again. Fingers crossed 🤞🏽
Thanks! 🙏
Great finds. So much history to be found 💪🏽 greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
Thanks! Good to hear from you again! 😎👍🍀
Hallo Mark! Mooie vondsten en wederom een mooie Video!
Fabulous finds. Great history saved. Best wishes from Lancashire, England.
Thanks! 😎👍🍀
Its like you are in the mirror universe over there although I dont normally find so many brooches here in Kent (UK) Well saved, Happy hunting Dave
Thanks Dave! 😎👍🍀
Do you have the same or similar system to report all gold and silver over 300 years old and 2 coins or more over 300 years old made of same?
@66DMJC I report everything from 1600 and older. A coin hoard will be reported as a hoard and each loose coin will also be reported with a note that it belongs to the specified hoard. 👍
Here it's the PAS (portable antiquities scheme) a database. Good clubs photograph all their older pieces and upload to it. I am planning to do something g similar for my past finds which are not treasure. It will take some time.
@66DMJC Yes, we have a similar system, it’s called PAN. Only difference is: Finds are ours and the landowners. But it can’t be declared treasure.
Mijn oudste zoon is helemaal fijn van Romeins tijd / geschiedenis.. Zo mooi als je dat kan zien
Bedankt!🙏
Watched this again. Really appreciate your in situ view and the after cleanup views. These videos must be really time consuming. Have my fingers crossed to win the Denarius.😊😊
Thanks! 🙏 Yeah, now that you mention it… These video really are time consuming… 😄
Mooie video weer Mark.
Thanks Erik! 😎👍🍀
I'm currently a history student at university studying Ancient history. I would love to be able to hold the history in my hand that I'm learning about, which is why I would want to win the giveaway!
Thanks! At which University are you studying? 👍
@@Medieval_Digger NYU in the U.S.!
Nice video again Mark - congratulations with the amazing finds! I would love to win a Roman coin because where I live and detect (in Thailand) there are no Roman coins to be found and when I'm on holiday in Holland I somehow never get a chance to go detecting! 😊
Thank you! 🙏 What kind of things do you find in Thailand? What is the oldest you can find? 👍
@@Medieval_Digger In my area I find relics from up to about 300 years ago and coins and amulets of up to about 150 years old. Also jewelry and coins on the popular beaches and in waterfalls ofcourse! There are a few provinces in the deep South where it's possible to find relics from 1000+ years but it's difficult terrrain to detect. Up in North and North East Thailand friends of mine find much older artifacts than here in the South - some up to 1000+ years old.
@Bowmouth Amazing! What kind of stuff that’s 1000 years old can they find? 😎👍🍀
@@Medieval_Digger Bronze items like axes, anklets, spearheads and rings. Ancient beads and a variety of silver and bronze "money" (in the form of bars, ornaments etc). Sometimes ancient cowrie shell money is also found by detectorists.
Hi! Amazing video!! I’d love to have the roman coin as it will be my first one!
Thank you! 👍
Nice finds again. And what a lot of brooches; the star one is the STAR of them all😀
Thanks! Yes, that is one that is in amazing condition. Probably my favorite find in this video. 🤔 Or maybe the coin hoard, it depends on how the coins come back from the professional cleaning! 😅👍
