Retrofitting a Custom Retrowave Dash in my Z31
In this video, I go over some of the common questions I get asked about my custom digital dash I made for my 300ZX, and show some of how I built it. I may make a follow-up to this video, if there is enough interest!
At the time of publication, I am not offering these for sale.
I am working on determining an outlet in which I may publish some of the information I have, relating to this project. I will update this description once this is available.

Z31 Electronic Steering Retrofit [Part 2]
มุมมอง 3.3K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Part two of a two-part series where I'll describe how I fitted an electric power steering assist motor to the steering column of my 1986 Nissan 300zx. I used the assembly out of a Nissan Versa, but some Kia Souls, as well as Nissan Sentra's and Prius' should have similar units. The Kia one appears to use a smaller motor. In the previous video, I went over the assembly of the main column. In thi...

Z31 Lock Cylinder Refreshing
มุมมอง 8054 ปีที่แล้ว
I like to make things complicated, and since new lock cylinders aren't available for the Z31 chassis, I found the closest match and made it work. Turns out, the ignition lock cylinder for an 84-86 Maxima or S12 chassis 200SX is quite similar to the z31 one, and with a few modifications, can work pretty well. NOTE: the pivot for the pin on the key-in-lock chime/steering lock lever needs to be sl...
Tachometer Testing [1986 300ZX, Lincoln Digital Cluster]
มุมมอง 2.4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Doing a bit of testing with the Lincoln digital cluster and the 300ZX. RPM reading appears to be accurate, averaging the samples and only updating the RPMs displayed when they change seems to have sorted the jitter I was experiencing before. Happy to see it reading well off the actual ignition signal. As always, I hope you all enjoy, even if it is quite short. Feel free to subscribe, I'll be tr...
More Ford/Lincoln cluster tests
มุมมอง 1.4K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Trying out a setup I configured using a Ford mirror adjustment switch, to control both sides of the display. This will allow me to have one knob in a center console instead of needing to fit buttons to a steering wheel and having to deal with clock springs. The switch information is sent over CAN to the cluster, as well as the data to turn the cluster on. These are sent from two separate microc...
Kouki Z31 300ZX LED Tail Lights
มุมมอง 8K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Bench testing a set of custom LED tail lights I've been working on for a Kouki Z31 300ZX. These lights feature: -2 brake lamp illumination modes (sweep and instant) -4 turn indicator modes; custom pattern on whole light, or on the amber portion alone, or a sweep on the brake light portion followed by a blink on the amber and a sweep off the brake, or turn off right after the amber fills in. -2 ...
Ford Instrument Cluster Testing
มุมมอง 1.5K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Spent some time mucking with an instrument cluster out of a 2014 Ford Flex. Every function on this cluster is controlled over the CAN NETWORK, aside from fuel level, washer fluid level, and detecting the transmission is in park. Controls in this video are provided through an Arduino Uno and an ElecFreaks CANBUS shield. A combination of scanning the data stream from the vehicle and broadcasting ...
So 1990's but with modern functions. I need something like that for my '95 Toyota Camry. I also need a Halls RPM Switch that can work in an automotive environment and send power to a independent Fuse/Relay block.
🎉🎉
Amazing man, that looks sick.
It is a great person who can make dreams a reality.
I think what you came up with is a great starting point but the car deserves something a bit more suited to it's personality. I think you could create something that doesn't look like it was stuffed in the empty space left by the original cluster that would be even cooler.
To each their own! Everyone's got their preference, I like how it turned out but there are obviously some improvements that could be made. That said, the Z31 instrument cluster pocket is very large. While I could stuff a plethora of gauges in every square inch of the space, realistically that's not necessary and in my opinion would lead to a lot of visual clutter that I don't want. There are still the two center pods, so there is no shortage of places to put instrumentation in this car, haha!
damn this is soooooo kick ass ! looks beter than any oem dash
Thats sweet!
Wow💪
I have an frs. I dont want to change my dash, but this is awesome in so many ways. Custom designing your own display and everything working together is amazing.
God damn brother I don’t even want to imagine how many hours you had into this defining the can network etc. that’s bad ass
How much would one of these cost for a c4 corvette
Saw your post in the Pimp My Ford server, great work!
What's the advantage of this Explorer dash over say a Nextion HMI display? Those are dedicated visual interfaces with decent performance, no?
Each have their pros and cons depending on what the goals are. Nextion displays are not available in a wide/bar aspect ratio, which limits options significantly. Nextion displays are often low grade, non IPS displays which means the viewing angle is quite narrow as well. The hardware and HMI software coding on the Explorer cluster is already done, which saves the time setting that up. The bonus is, if/when I set the car up with CAN across the body, I can just omit my interface board and connect directly. That said, a good HMI display could be an option too if you really want full design freedom, and are prepared to build the supporting hardware to achieve similar functionality.
@@BlitzenDesignLab Thanks! I've never used Nextion's so far, but this idea of an updated dash for an oldtimer car is fascinating to me. Though I have no idea how the authorities feel about dashboard replacements in my country. Might be illegal, but impossible to find info...
Yeah that wallpaper is going to be a real eyesore
@@mark.082 good thing it can be changed to whatever I want!
This is such a cool restomod. Wish I had the skills to do this to my old 1989 Sentra.
Im wanting to swap a fusion cluster in to a 2013 ford focus the issue are kinda a pain but any news ok this would be great
I’d love for my bike to have a dash like this!
This looks great. The only thing that bothers me is how the sun sits a little higher at ignition turn on and then abruptly jumps down when the rest of the dials come in. What would be really cool is if the grid pattern could be animated, and for it to come towards the driver relative to the speed you are actually driving at.
I'm glad you like it! The sun moving is part of the cluster changing from two display modes, "active" and "quiet". The trouble was, the image files for these are two different sizes, which was the compromise you see there. Since making this video there have been some improvements in the graphics options for these clusters, so I can use larger images which should allow me to address that, as well as adjust the top edge to line up with the frame better! Unfortunately with the hardware in the Ford cluster, animated backgrounds aren't an option. But I think a moving background may be a bit distracting anyhow
I wish I was as skilled as this. Amazing work!
Got a Mondeo with one of those gauge "clusters". Is it possible to do a custom theme on it like you did on yours, or is there something even more custom behind that?
@@izfrogz the mondeo clusters of this style are able to have it done too, I believe the only trouble would be if it's a 2015 or earlier as they had slightly different hardware
@ nice, thanks for the reply. What do you need to reflash the firmware?
@@izfrogz I used an OBDLink EX, and a version of the Forscan software that supported firmware updating (I am not sure if this is still available, however). I believe there were other options as well, this was just what I had already.
love that Cyberpunk look!
cool vid - question since it get all the im puts from the ecu can you move the sun ie move steering the the left sun goes right
@@C1PH3R_og unfortunately the cluster is still an OEM one at heart, and this is not something I can change the behaviour of. If it were built from scratch though, it would be possible
Well done
bro this is awesome. ever thought of building and selling them?
@@you_mad I'm glad you like it! I have thought about it, but I'm not in a position at this time to doing it. I do plan to put up some documentation but have been far too busy with other things to get a chance!
retro shit is dumb as fuck. steampunk shit is dumb as fuck. theres nothing cool about shit that isnt popular today. that 80s neon desgins look stupid as fuck in 2024
can i get simillar for my bmw e60?
Personally, I'd rather go with the 2013/14 Mustang premium cluster. Yeah the only screen is a rectangle in the middle, but the analog gauges are so retro and would work great in any older car.
The analog mustang clusters do have a unique look to them! I think if the car was a bit older they would be a bit more fitting, but that's just my opinion.
id love something like this for my v12 s10
Greating from russian engeneer!
This video should be age restricted because the way the custom engineered parts went together gave me a funny feeling inside.
This is a masterpiece, ma man! I love the retro theme, and the way you incorporated the information displays, the way it cures up and to the right, the lighting…superb!! I know it’s your prototype project, but if one day you start making them for Nissan GTR R35, let me know. I’ll be your first customer!! 🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️
Can you make me one for my 280zx! Dude you are talented!
cooler than any mod you can buy of the shelf
I wish i could have a digital dash for my bmw e46 with exact same dials setup like oem but is not possible.. Cool dash you have for sure
Can you make the wakeup sound "Nightcall" by Kavinsky?
No way bro was actually coding anything typing that fast lol
@@goodgremlinmedia2757 ya got me 😩 I'm a sham
super impressive
Hey dude I drive a 87 z31 and I really have a lot of questions I’m trying to build it up a little but it’s hard for that year model
@@dni_eman6172 depending on what you're looking for the aftermarket for these cars can get kind of weird for sure. I like doing custom and fabrication work so I don't mind much, but I know it's not everyone's jam! That said, there have been some new players in the game these last few years so there's more options than there used to be for many things!
This is the coolest shit I‘ve ever seen
bro ur off ur head this is awesome man wow!!!! unbelievably creative!
Hey do you w.... YES!
Made just like Opel Senator Digital ];-D.
ive been wanting to make a custom dash for my 2007 bmw (nothing wrong with the stock dash i just thought it would be fun to make a cyberpunk-y dash for it), but i put that project on standby indefinitely. This may have revived that idea. Just a question for if you make a follow up, how did you change the background on the ford gauge cluster?
amazing stuff!
I don't think many people appreciate just how much work obviously went into this behind the scenes. You have a great sense of style and a great work ethic to pull it off.
Holy s**t! This looks amazing! Your f*****g smart! How much for you to make one for my 2003 fairlady z the main cluster and the 3 on the dash.
How are you coding lines at a time? Do you just type that fast, or is that shortcuts and stuff?
@@First2TheKee for the video, I was pretty much just doing a bit (I'm not about to actually record myself writing code as that wouldn't be particularly entertaining!) That said, yes I do hand write most of my code. Some stuff can be made easier with the use of libraries and API's but sometimes ya just gotta do it
@@BlitzenDesignLab Hahah okay, I was like, damn this dude types fast
@@First2TheKee I wish!

If it's possible, try fading the edges of the background image to make the digital needles more visible. I love this idea, and now want to try something like it on my own car!
@@thatprettyparrot either that or I may change the color some on the needles to improve contrast
@@BlitzenDesignLab Both is cool. What if you matched the needle color to your vehicle color, and added a lighter-tinted outline?
With all that work you put into it, some plastic polish on that cluster window would fix up those scratches.
@@cameltoast this cluster window is pretty worse for wear, I'll be making a new one without the odometer pin holes before I install it in the car
@@BlitzenDesignLab oh nice!
